Methacrylic esters, represented by methyl methacrylate (MMA), are widely used as commodity chemicals. Here, the one-pot synthesis of methacrylic esters from acetone, a haloform and alcohols in the presence of an organic base is described. Using DBU as the organic base for the reaction of acetone, chloroform and methanol in acetonitrile afforded MMA in 66 % yield. When the solvent was replaced by benzonitrile, the product MMA was successfully purified by distillation. OBJECTIVES: Cardiovascular complications have been frequently described in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Both Crohn disease and Ulcerative Colitis are characterized by malabsorption of some micronutrients, such as carnitine, which is a very important element for myocardial metabolism, being demonstrated that its deficiency correlates with heart involvement in coeliac disease. Aims of this study are to evaluate cardiac function in IBD patients asymptomatic for cardiovascular diseases and to correlate the cardiac data with the profile of carnitine esters plasma levels.

A two-step zero-length crosslinking procedure for studying protein-protein complexes has been developed. One component of a complex is briefly incubated with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide (EDC) in the presence of N-hydroxysuccinimide resulting in the conversion of some of the protein carboxyls into succinimidyl esters. The reaction is stopped by addition of beta-mercaptoethanol and other interacting proteins are then added. The local application of 2-hydroxyethyl salicylic acid esters and ether salicylic acid esters offers the possibility of therapy with salicylic acid that avoids a systemic burden of the body. This justifies the unavoidable uptake of ethylene glycol. The effects of DEHP on sperm morphology and on peripheral blood micronuclei were studied for 12 weeks following five subacute IP injections of DEHP at 1/6, 1/12, and 1/60 of the LD50 per day. Sperm morphology was examined in both adult mice and rats, while peripheral blood micronuclei were scored in mice up to 4 weeks after treatment. A gas chromatographic method for determination of methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, propyl acetate, butyl acetate and amyl acetate has been elaborated. The best separation of determined compounds has been achieved on a column containing 10% Carbowax 20 M on Chromosorb W AW DMCS. Air samples are collected by passing the examined air through charcoal tubes and consequent desorption of adsorbed compounds with carbon disulfide. Activated charcoal used in all tests has been found to adsorb 10%, by weight, of acetic acid esters.
