OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the tumor necrosis factor fusion protein etanercept in children with treatment-resistant uveitis.
METHODS: Ten children with chronic active uveitis (7 girls and 3 boys, mean age 7.5 years [range 3-12 years]) were enrolled in this prospective study. In 7 children, uveitis was associated with pauciarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Five children were antinuclear antibody positive. This report details the pulmonary pathologic findings in four patients with rheumatoid arthritis, who developed new onset of pulmonary signs and symptoms with alveolar infiltrates temporally related to the institution of etanercept therapy. Biopsy findings showed an interstitial and air space lymphohistiocytic infiltrate with non-necrotizing granulomas, in the setting of negative cultures and special stains for microorganisms. The association with etanercept therapy and granulomatous reactions is discussed along with the differential diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the long-term safety and efficacy of etanercept treatment in Polish patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).
MATERIAL/METHODS: The study involved patients, fulfilling the JIA criteria of the International League of Associations of Rheumatology (ILAR), who were started on etanercept therapy after methotrexate and other synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) had proven ineffective. Solitary fibrous tumor is a rare neoplasm that most often involves the pleura. The increasing numbers of this neoplasm have also been reported to date in extrapleural sites.
