Although Carper's model of the ways of knowing in nursing has played a critical role in delineating the body of knowledge that comprises the discipline, questions remain regarding the defining properties of the knowledge structures, how they relate to each other, and how they function in the process of knowing. In this article, we propose that the cognitive model of social knowledge developed within the field of social psychology can be used to extend our understanding of the form and function of the four types of nursing knowledge. Empirical, personal, esthetic and ethical knowledge are compa

This study translated and adapted the AI Literacy Questionnaire for Chinese pre-service teachers, grounded in Expectancy-Value Theory as a pre-specified theoretical framework. Examining its psychometric properties in a sample of 341 pre-service teachers (78% female; 86.5% third-year students) from Guangdong Province, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported a 24-item, five-factor structure: AI Ethics, AI Behavioral Commitment, AI Self-efficacy, AI Cognitive Application, and AI Intrinsic Motivation. The five-factor model showed acceptable fit and stable results across estimation m

We utilize the social intuitionist approach to moral judgment and moral disengagement theory to understand why and when employees sabotage customers. We contend that when customers mistreat employees (i.e., customer mistreatment), employees experience intuitive emotional reactions in the form of hostility, which automatically activates devaluation of targets, a specific facet of moral disengagement. In turn, employees become unencumbered by moral self-regulation and sabotage customers who mistreat them (i.e., customer-directed sabotage). We further argue that our serially mediated model is mod

INTRODUCTION: Modern surgical practice presents increasingly complex ethical challenges, shaped by technological advancements and a shift toward shared decision-making and patient autonomy. While technical proficiency is essential, a strong foundation in ethics is critical for surgical residents. However, ethics education in many residency programs remains unstandardized and insufficient. To address this gap, we developed the RISE (Resident Immersion in Surgical Ethics) curriculum using Kern's 6-Step Approach to curriculum development.
METHODS: A targeted local needs assessment was conducted

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, hearing loss is a significant public health issue and one of the most common chronic health conditions experienced by older adults. Hearing loss is associated with communication difficulties, social withdrawal, isolation and lower quality of life. Although hearing aid technology has improved significantly, the workload of managing hearing aids has increased. The aim of this qualitative study is to develop a novel theory of people's lived experience of hearing loss across the lifespan.
METHODS: Eligible participants will be young people and adults aged 16 years and abo

INTRODUCTION: The integration of generative artificial intelligence into higher education has reshaped students' academic practices and blurred normative boundaries around academic integrity. While prior research has focused mainly on attitudes and usage intentions, limited attention has been paid to students' AI ethical decision-making in academic scenarios and its psychological mechanisms. This study examined the associations among AI ethics guidance, academic ethics course experience, moral cognition, cognitive complexity, and AI ethical decision-making. It tested whether moral cognition me

During the 1990s medical ethics will undergo changes. Individual clinical issues, especially those related to death and dying, will continue to create conflict and preoccupy hospital staffs. But professional ethicists will focus on social concerns more frequently than they have in the past. Following are some of the most crucial ethical issues and directions they are likely to take in this decade: Clinical practice and the law will move toward less demanding standards of proof regarding the withdrawal of treatment from patients who are no longer competent. Public policy will set more lenient s

It has been suggested that initiatives to eradicate specific communicable diseases need to be informed by eradication investment cases to assess the feasibility, costs, and consequences of eradication compared with elimination or control. A methodological challenge of eradication investment cases is how to account for the ethical importance of the benefits, burdens, and distributions thereof that are salient in people's experiences of the diseases and related interventions but are not assessed in traditional approaches to health and economic evaluation. We have offered a method of ethical anal

The remnants of colonialism manifesting as structural violence, racism, and oppression continue to plague our society as evidenced by the persistence of health inequities, particularly for minority populations in the United States. As a profession bound by moral and ethical mandates, nursing must resist and deconstruct oppression in all its forms. Nurses, informed by critical race theory, intersectionality, and historical trauma, can become formidable allies with marginalized populations in the fight for social justice and health equity.

There is an increasing focus on clinical audit within the Irish Health System to drive quality improvement and standardise care, with many established and emerging clinical audits underway. Since the burden of data collection typically falls to busy clinical staff, understanding the impact of audit is especially crucial. However, the literature rarely explores how audits generate impact, for whom and in what context, despite the considerable effort invested in collecting this valuable data. This study will explore how a national clinical audit is established, maintained and sustained in order

INTRODUCTION: As the implementation of AI accelerates within organizations, concerns emerge about the ethicality of AI-driven systems and tools and the ways people use them. Although previous literature proposes numerous theories regarding how to develop and use AI ethically, questions remain about how users perceive the ethicality of AI and the effects this has on their engagement with AI tools. The study aims to explore whether and how certain perceptions of AI tool attributes, including beliefs about the explainability of the AI tool (xAI) and moral intensity dimensions (i.e., magnitude of

IntroductionPregnancy planning in patients with chronic kidney disease can result in ethical conflicts due to the potential for adverse outcomes. Traditionally, many nephrologists have advised their patients to avoid pregnancy altogether; however, this approach is paternalistic and not patient-centered. An ethical framework could guide joint decision-making between physicians and their patients, but this does not currently exist.MethodsWe performed a literature search to identify the ethical considerations associated with this patient population. We searched for articles published between 1975

Emotional safety in the therapy room is a clinical resource that belongs to the client. A growing number of clinicians, particularly those trained in social justice frameworks, feel empowered or obligated to correct clients' use of language deemed offensive. This paper argues that such practices are ethically indefensible and clinically counterproductive. Drawing on meta-analytic evidence on the therapeutic alliance, countertransference management, and core conditions of change, the evidence indicates that corrective responses to client language damage the alliance quality, increase the risk o

BACKGROUND: This paper examines the ethical aspects of organ transplant surgery in which a donor heart is transplanted from a first recipient, following determination of death by neurologic criteria, to a second recipient. Retransplantation in this sense differs from that in which one recipient undergoes repeat heart transplantation of a newly donated organ, and is thus referred to here as "reuse cardiac organ transplantation."
METHODS: Medical, legal, and ethical analysis, with a main focus on ethical analysis.
RESULTS: From the medical perspective, it is critical to ensure the quality and

INTRODUCTION: Venous leg ulcers are slow-healing wounds with a high risk of recurrences. To prevent recurrences and promote healing, different nurse-led educational interventions have been developed. The impact of these interventions on self-management is ambiguous. Also, how persons with a venous leg ulcer experiences these educational sessions are poorly described.
AIM: This study protocol presents the methodology to provide a comprehensive explanation of participants' journeys-of how they experience their individualised education sessions concerning self-management.

OBJECTIVE: To describe ethical approaches to the issue of pregnancy termination after prenatal detection of cleft lip ± palate.
RESULTS: Gynecologists and cleft surgeons are sometimes confronted with the demand for a pregnancy termination after ultrasound detection of an isolated cleft lip/cleft palate. In this article, we discuss different ethical theories and principles that can be applied to the dilemma at hand. We formulate recommendations that will respect the right to autonomy of the pregnant woman and at the same time acknowledge that a termination of pregnancy for a cleft lip may in m

Pediatric palliative care is increasingly recognized as an established practice yet less than ten percent of children who need it access it worldwide. Contributing to this gap is an absence of pediatric-specific bioethics frameworks to guide the care of dying children. Because philosophies influence cohesive care provision, the purpose of this review was to critically examine the international, scholarly literature on the ethical content of pediatric end-of-life care guidelines to ascertain what pediatric ethics approaches are used to guide the care of dying children. A Rapid Review of the int

Palliative sedation (PS) is a morally complex end-of-life practice that sits at the intersection of medicine, law, religion, and culture. While often framed as a purely clinical intervention aimed at alleviating intractable suffering, this article argues that PS functions—particularly in pluralistic societies such as Israel—as a form of ethical mediation and cultural accommodation. Through a philosophical-theoretical inquiry, this paper explores PS not as a universally justified act, but as a “cultural solution”: a pragmatic ethical practice that enables care to proceed amid deep moral disagre

INTRODUCTION: Avoidable and unfair variation in access to palliative care exists for different groups of people and communities. Primary and community care teams deliver most palliative care and care to people at the end of life at home but the quality of care provided is variable. This is an under-researched area and receives little attention in service design and policy. This study will investigate the key contexts, resources and components required for an integrated approach to palliative care to deliver improved and more equitable outcomes for patients and carers.

This article explores how nursing ethics can be informed by the experiences and perspectives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer or questioning plus (LGBTQ+) people. It discusses research on cancer disparities for LGBTQ+ patients, demonstrating the need for culturally tailored interventions. Research in this area often has a narrow focus on improving care for marginalised groups, rather than considering what dominant healthcare approaches could learn from these groups. Through examining queer theory and areas such as human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) and acquired immunodeficien
