[Ethnic variations of scalp hair].

There has been no polytypical variation in human hairforms for at least the last 10,000 years. In view of the wide variety of hair forms, it must be assumed that biological adaptation has occurred. Several features of the scalp hair, such as form, color, thickness, density, maximal length, tensile strength, etc. are clearly genetically determined. When dealing with diseases of the hair, it may be useful for the dermatologist to distinguish between "hair" and "hair".

Ethnic differences in cancer frequency.

Ethnic and racial differences in cancer incidence, mortality and survival are well documented for many tumor sites. For skin cancer and probably for some other sites such differences have their foundation in biological characteristics that presumably reflect genetically determined differences. In other cases, apparent racial differences in fact reflect and must be distinguished from, associated co--variables including socio--economic and cultural factors.

Race, Ethnicity, and Social Vulnerability in the Evaluation of Stillbirth.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between race, ethnicity, and social vulnerability on evaluation of stillbirth. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study examined stillbirths occurring at two sites within a single tertiary care center from 2015 to 2024. Cases included stillbirths occurring at or after 20 weeks of gestation. Exclusion criteria were spontaneous periviable (before 23 weeks) deliveries, medically indicated deliveries, and multiple gestations. Outcome variables included measures of laboratory and pathologic stillbirth evaluation and social vulnerability using the Social Vulnerabil

Treatment Utilization after Uterine Fibroid Diagnosis by Race and Ethnicity.

BACKGROUND: Treatment utilization after the first fibroid diagnosis has not been well described for patients who are not Black or White. We studied treatment utilization by race and ethnicity in a large, diverse patient cohort. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the electronic health records of Kaiser Permanente Northern California, we studied 84,206 female patients aged 18-54 from first fibroid diagnosis (January 1, 2009-December 31, 2022) for up to 5 years and ascertained treatments received (levonorgestrel intrauterine device [IUD], hysteroscopic myomectomy, myomectomy, uterine artery embolization,

Race and ethnicity reporting and representation in hemophilia clinical trials.

Racial and ethnic representativeness in clinical trials is crucial to mitigate disparities in outcomes; however, diversity among hemophilia trials is unknown. The aim of this study is to examine the reporting and representation of race and ethnicity in trials of people with hemophilia (PwH). In this cross-sectional study, the ClinicalTrials.gov database was queried in April 2023 for interventional clinical trials involving PwH between 2007 and 2022. The distribution of participants (observed) was compared with expected proportions based on US Hemophilia Treatment Center (HTC) and country-speci

Maternal ethnicity and socioeconomic deprivation: influence on adverse pregnancy outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relative importance of ethnicity and socioeconomic deprivation in determining the likelihood and prevalence of placentally derived composite of adverse pregnancy outcomes (CAPO) and composite of severe adverse pregnancy outcomes (CAPO-S). METHODS: This was a single-center retrospective cohort study of data obtained in a tertiary maternity unit. Data regarding ethnicity and socioeconomic deprivation (as measured with indices of multiple deprivation) were collected for 13 165 singleton pregnancies screened routinely in the first trimester for pre-eclampsia using the F

Race and Ethnicity in Lewy Body Dementia: A Narrative Review.

Lewy body dementia is the third most common and costliest type of dementia. It is an umbrella term for dementia with Lewy bodies and Parkinson's disease dementia, both of which place a substantial burden on the person and society. Recent findings outline ethnoracial differences in dementia risk. Delayed and misdiagnosis across ethnoracial groups contribute to higher levels of burden. In this context, we aimed to summarize current knowledge, gaps, and unmet needs relating to race and ethnicity in Lewy body dementia. In this narrative review, we provide an overview of studies on Lewy body dement

Updating the Fitzpatrick Classification: The Skin Color and Ethnicity Scale.

BACKGROUND: There has been a significant increase in submissions to scientific journals addressing a broad spectrum of medical and surgical conditions in subjects grouped under the classification of "Skin of Color." Authors, reviewers, and editors have struggled with accurate terminology. OBJECTIVE: To update the Fitzpatrick scale to make it more accurate in stratifying various shades of skin color. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A thorough literature review was performed using PubMed and Embase to assess existing skin color scales, and an extensive internet search was conducted using makeup foundat

Smoking-Cessation Assistance Among Older Adults by Ethnicity/Language Preference.

INTRODUCTION: Although smoking prevalence is lower among Hispanic adults than among non-Hispanic White adults, smoking remains a leading cause of preventable death among older Hispanics. This study examines the differences in tobacco assessment and smoking-cessation assistance among older patients seen in community health centers by ethnicity and language preference. METHODS: Electronic health record data were extracted from the Accelerating Data Value Across a National Community Health Center Network of community health centers from patients aged 55‒80 years with ≥1 primary care visit betwee

Race/Ethnicity and Relationship Stereotypes in Child Sex Abuse Cases.

Child sex abuse (CSA) is a specific category of crime for which the presumption of guilt may be particularly high, especially for defendant categories stereotypically associated with the crime. The current study utilized survey methodology to examine the magnitude of the presumption of guilt for CSA, as well as stereotypes associating perpetrator race and relationship to the victim with likelihood of CSA. Participants (N = 220) indicated the percentage of CSA allegations they believed to be true, and rank-ordered racial and relationship categories they believed most likely to commit CSA. Femal

H Syndrome: Report of The First Case in African Ethnicity.

H syndrome is an autosomal recessive multisystemic disease with a very low prevalence rate, characterized by indurated cutaneous hyperpigmentation, hypertrichosis, and various systemic manifestations. The syndrome is caused by mutations in SLC29A3 gene on chromosome 10q23, encoding for human equilibrative transporter 3 (hENT3). So far, only 100-120 patients with H syndrome have been described in the literature, with predominance among Indian, North-American, and Arab ethnicities. This case report describes the first one of H-syndrome rarities in African ethnicity, a 30-year-old Sudanese male m

Age- and ethnicity-related reference intervals for serum vitamin B12.

BACKGROUND: Age and ethnicity are known to influence serum vitamin B12 (B12) concentration, yet universal reference intervals (RIs) are typically applied by laboratories. Both lower and upper RI limits for B12 are clinically relevant. Low values suggest deficiency leading to anemia and/or neurological impairment, while high values are not always an innocuous consequence of high B12 intake but are associated with some cancers, autoimmune, liver, and renal diseases. This work aimed to establish age- and ethnicity-related RIs for B12 using a modified indirect method based on Hoffmann's approach.

Apoplectic leiomyomas: does ethnicity make a difference? a clinicopathologic study.

Apoplectic leiomyomas-benign uterine leiomyomas with morphologic changes including hemorrhage, hypercellularity, mitotic activity, nuclear atypia, and even necrosis-can be difficult to distinguish from uterine leiomyosarcomas. Apoplectic leiomyomas have been associated with hormonal therapy; however, the relationship between apoplectic leiomyomas, hormones, and ethnicity has not received much attention in the literature. We evaluated the relationship of hormonal therapy and ethnicity in 869 women with uterine leiomyomas, 136 of which qualified as apoplectic leiomyomas.Apoplectic leiomyomas wer
