Molecular dosimetry of DNA adducts in mice exposed to ethylene oxide.

Ethylene oxide (EtO) is a highly reactive industrial chemical and known human carcinogen with a mutagenic mode of action (MOA). Its genotoxicity is primarily mediated through alkylation of DNA, forming the mutagenic adduct O6-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2'-deoxyguanosine (O6-HE-dG), albeit in small quantities, and the more abundant but less- or nonmutagenic N7-(2-hydroxyethyl)guanine (N7-HE-G) adduct. However, dose-response relationships of these DNA adducts, particularly at low inhalation exposure levels (< 3 ppm), remain unknown. These data are necessary to inform the biological plausibility of differe

Ethylene signaling negatively regulates rapeseed resistance to Plasmodiophora brassicae.

Clubroot, caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae, poses a serious threat to the rapeseed (Brassica napus) industry. Due to B. napus being an allopolyploid with a complex genome and the current scarcity of available resistance gene resources, the molecular basis of rapeseed resistance to P. brassicae remains poorly understood. Here, we performed a functional characterization of BnEIN2 (ethylene-insensitive protein) to explore the role of ethylene signaling in rapeseed resistance to P. brassicae. The Bnein2 mutants generated through CRISPR/Cas9 technology exhibited enhanced resistance to P. brassica

Multifunctional Molecular Cages Boost Acidic CO2 Electroreduction to Ethylene.

Acidic electrocatalytic CO2 reduction (CO2RR) to multicarbon (C2+) products offers a promising pathway for efficient carbon utilization, as acidic media suppress carbonate formation and improve CO2 availability. However, two intrinsic limitations, rapid reduction of Cu+ to Cu0 and fast desorption/diffusion of the *CO intermediate, severely hindered C-C coupling and thus diminish ethylene (C2H4) selectivity in acidic CO2RR. Here, we constructed a molecular cage on the Cu2O surface by grafting cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), which simultaneously stabilized Cu+ and restricted *CO diffusion

Cascade Oxidation of Ethylene and Propylene over a Redox Heterometallic Cluster.

The selective oxidation of ethylene (C2H4) and propylene (C3H6) offers the most important route for preparing a variety of platform chemicals. However, current industrial synthesis still relies on diversified thermo-oxidation methods, resulting in complex, inefficient, and high-cost production. Herein, we report a redox heterometallic cluster (TiIV16MnII4) catalyst capable of achieving unprecedented cascade oxidation of C2H4 and C3H6 to divergent products in a simple photoassisted electrochemical system. In situ characterizations combined with theoretical calculations disclose that under photo

[Research progress and prospects of cyanobacterial cell factories for ethylene production].

Ethylene, a fundamental feedstock in the petrochemical industry, is conventionally produced via energy-intensive steam cracking of fossil fuels, a process associated with high energy consumption and carbon emissions. Constructing photosynthetic cyanobacterial cell factories for the direct, solar-driven conversion of CO2 to ethylene offers a promising route for the green production of ethylene. This review systematically summarizes recent advances in this field, highlighting the core catalytic mechanism of the ethylene-forming enzyme (EFE), the screening and optimization of key genetic elements

A chemo-enzymatic colorimetric cascade for detecting ethylene glycol contamination.

Ethylene glycol (EG) detection is essential for medical diagnostics and food safety control. EG is also released during polyethylene terephthalate (PET) depolymerization catalyzed by PET hydrolases, making EG quantification a valuable indicator of PET hydrolase activity. Here we developed a colorimetric EG detection assay based on a chemo-enzymatic cascade involving alcohol dehydrogenase and selective chemical reactions. Incorporation of an auxiliary cofactor regeneration system enhanced the detection sensitivity 32-fold, yielding excellent analytical performance with linearity (r2 = 0.9952) a

Wischnewski spots and ethylene glycol fatal poisoning: a case report.

We present the case of a woman who was found dead in a countryside 11 days after disappearing from home. At the examination of the scene of death a black plastic can of antifreeze fluid was found near the body. The autopsy and complementary analysis allowed us to establish that the cause of death was an irreversible cardio-circulatory arrest caused by acute poisoning by the ingestion of ethylene glycol. Moreover, the gastric mucosa showed numerous black hemorrhagic spots, histologically diagnosed to be "Wischnewski spots". Therefore, because most of the toxicity of ethylene glycol comes from i

CO Reduction to Ethylene and Cyclopropane via a Trappable Ruthenium Methylidene.

Ruthenium complexes based on cis-[Ru(bpy)2(CO)2]2+ (bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine) can reduce CO2 and CO to C1 products including methanol, but access to products containing C-C bonds has been elusive. A reaction pathway to convert CO into multicarbon products ethylene and cyclopropane is presented here, along with mechanistic studies elucidating the key intermediates in C-C bond formation. The ruthenium hydroxymethyl complex [Ru(bpy')2(CO)(CH2OH)]+ (bpy' = 5,5'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine) undergoes protonolysis to generate the ethylene complex [Ru(bpy')2(CO)(C2H4)]2+ even at -80 °C, with free ethylene

Poly(ethylene Glycol)-Based Peptidomimetics (Pegtides) of Antimicrobial Peptides.

Cationic amphipathic poly(ethylene glycol)-based polymers are generated with synthetic efficiencies allowing their evaluation as antimicrobial peptide (AMP) mimetics. Accordingly, statistical copolymers with cationic units consistently functionalized with guanyl groups, but different side-chain lengths, and hydrophobic units displaying long aliphatic, branched, and/or aromatic side chains are produced and tested for their antimicrobial and hemolytic properties. The results obtained indicate that candidates with activities and selectivity commensurate to some AMPs can be obtained and that furth

The teamwork of melatonin, ethylene and H2S in abiotic stress adaptation in plants.

Abiotic stresses significantly reduce plant growth and productivity, challenging agricultural sustainability. Plants have evolved adaptive mechanisms to counter these stresses, including antioxidant defences, biochemical changes, and hormonal signaling. Among these, the hormone melatonin (MT) and signaling molecules, ethylene (ET) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S), play pivotal roles, interacting in complex ways that modulate stress responses. Melatonin, known for its antioxidant properties, interacts with ET pathways to regulate its production. While ET is essential for stress signaling, its overpro

[From diagnostic uncertainty to therapeutic action in ethylene glycol poisoning].

Ethylene glycol (EG) is a toxic alcohol capable of causing potentially severe acute poisoning, primarily resulting from the accidental or intentional ingestion of antifreeze liquids. The clinical presentation involves neurological, renal, and systemic impairment, with metabolic acidosis and an elevated anion gap (AG). In some cases, EG is considered a differential diagnosis for severe metabolic acidosis with an elevated AG, as well as acute kidney injury. A characteristic finding is the presence of calcium oxalate crystals in the urine. Delayed diagnosis and treatment worsen the prognosis. Thi

Comparing the efficacy of serotonin and ethylene glycol tetraacetate on postpartum hypocalcemia.

Inducing a transient state of hypocalcemia prepartum mobilizes stored Ca before the abrupt demand for Ca at parturition thus more tightly regulating postpartum hypocalcemia. Prepartum transient hypocalcemia can be achieved through intravenous infusions of either the precursor to serotonin, 5-hydroxy-tryptophan (5HTP) or a Ca chelating agent, ethylene glycol tetraacetic acid (EGTA). This study aimed to compare the ability of 5HTP and EGTA treatments to prevent postpartum hypocalcemia. We hypothesized that the 2 methods would be similarly effective compared with the control. Cows received either

Ethylene promotes SMAX1 accumulation to inhibit arbuscular mycorrhiza symbiosis.

Most land plants engage in arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) symbiosis with Glomeromycotina fungi for better access to mineral nutrients. The plant hormone ethylene suppresses AM development, but a molecular explanation for this phenomenon is lacking. Here we show that ethylene inhibits the expression of many genes required for AM formation in Lotus japonicus. These genes include strigolactone biosynthesis genes, which are needed for fungal activation, and Common Symbiosis genes, which are required for fungal entry into the root. Application of strigolactone analogs and ectopic expression of the Comm

Rapid availability of ethylene glycol test results with enzymatic assay.

BACKGROUND: Ethylene glycol poisoning causes metabolic acidosis, organ injury, and death. Ethylene glycol testing is unavailable in many areas. Our laboratory uses an automated glycerol dehydrogenase enzymatic assay to screen for ethylene glycol. We sought to determine how often ethylene glycol results were available within 12 h of the first dose of fomepizole. METHODS: Records from a single poison center were reviewed from December 2016 to December 2019. Cases were identified by searching for cases that received fomepizole. Outcomes included whether results were available within 12 h, and th

Engineering poly(ethylene glycol) particles for targeted drug delivery.

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) is considered to be the "gold standard" among the stealth polymers employed for drug delivery. Using PEG to modify or engineer particles has thus gained increasing interest because of the ability to prolong blood circulation time and reduce nonspecific biodistribution of particles in vivo, owing to the low fouling and stealth properties of PEG. In addition, endowing PEG-based particles with targeting and drug-loading properties is essential to achieve enhanced drug accumulation at target sites in vivo. In this feature article, we focus on recent work on the synthesi

Systematic review of the scientific evidence on ethylene oxide as a human carcinogen.

Ethylene oxide is a highly reactive chemical primarily used as an intermediate in chemical production and as a sterilant of medical equipment and food products; it also is produced endogenously as a result of physiological processes. We conducted a systematic review of the potential carcinogenicity of inhaled ethylene oxide in humans using methods that adhere to PRIMSA guidelines and that incorporate aspects from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) (now the National Academy of Medicine) as well as several US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) frameworks for systematic reviews. After a comprehen

Study on wet oxidation process and mechanism for ethylene spent caustic.

Ethylene spent caustic with strong alkalinity, high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and toxicity could not be directly discharged without pretreatment. In this paper, the composition of spent caustic from a petrochemical enterprise was analyzed. Effects of oxidants, reaction temperature, pressure and residence time on the removal ratio of COD in the spent caustic were investigated. The oxidation reaction mechanism of main organic sulphides in the spent caustic was discussed. Results show that COD of the ethylene spent caustic is ∼ 24.5 g/L, the main compositions are S2- and disulphides including

Theoretical Modeling of Photocatalytic Degradation Mechanism of Ethylene Over TiO2.

The photocatalytic degradation of ethylene over TiO2 has been widely studied, however, there are discrepancies between the degradation mechanisms proposed in experimental works. Some of them propose a degradation and mineralization mechanism trough ethoxide, acetaldehyde, acetic acid and finally carbon dioxide, whereas others did not find acetaldehyde or acetic acid, but formaldehyde and formic acid as intermediaries in the same process through the presence of the formyl radical HCOO · on the catalyst surface. Through ab initio calculations it is possible to analyze the published experimental
