Etomidate ameliorates ferroptosis and mitochondrial damage in myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury.

Etomidate plays a protective role in ischemia/reperfusion diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate its mechanism in ameliorating myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury (MI/RI). Experimental models of MI/RI in rats and hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) injury in H9c2 cardiomyocytes were established to examine the myocardial protective properties of Etomidate. The effects of Etomidate on myocardial tissue damage were evaluated by echocardiography, serum cardiac enzymes, myocardial hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and Masson staining. Cardiomyocyte injury was determined by detecting cell

Severe Myoclonus Masking Thyroid Storm Following Etomidate Administration: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Etomidate administration can induce thyroid storm-like symptoms, including tachycardia, palpitations, muscle weakness, tremors, hypermetabolism, and excessive sweating. The incidence of myoclonus after etomidate use is 50-80%, necessitating vigilant monitoring and management of patients. In contrast, thyroid storm is a critical complication of hyperthyroidism, involving a sudden surge in thyroid hormone levels, causing high fever, hypertension, severe arrhythmia, nervous system disturbances, and gastrointestinal symptoms, which require prompt medical attention to avert fatal outcome

Etomidate inhibits tumor growth of glioblastoma by regulating M1 macrophage polarization.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is a common primary central nervous system tumor. Although the multimodal integrated treatment for GBM has made great progress in recent years, the overall survival time of GBM is still short. Thus, novel treatments for GBM are worth further investigation and exploration. This study aimed to investigate the effects of etomidate on GBM tumor growth and the underlying mechanism. A xenograft tumor model was established and treated with etomidate to assess tumor growth. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) assay evaluated the positive rate of Ki67 cells in tumor tissues. Accidental Intrathecal Injection of Etomidate During Spinal Anesthesia: A Case Report.

Etomidate is an ultra-short-acting anesthetic agent derived from imidazole that can only be administered intravenously. Etomidate has excellent hemodynamic properties in inducing anesthesia, making it an ideal choice for patients with shock, hypovolemia, or significant cardiovascular disease, with minimal reduction in blood pressure. We report a case of a female patient who was given accidental etomidate intrathecally instead of ropivacaine because of its similar appearance, which led to a slight decrease in blood pressure and no change in the pulse rate. The patient had stable vital signs and

Etomidate anaesthesia by immersion in oriental fire-bellied toads (Bombina orientalis).

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy and the safety of etomidate anaesthesia by immersion technique in Bombina orientalis. The study comprised two phases. The first phase was carried out to identify the etomidate concentration capable of producing anaesthetic induction, as well as surgical anaesthesia, in the toads. The second phase was aimed at testing that concentration in eight additional animals. Etomidate administered via immersion at a concentration of 37.5 mg/L produced effective anaesthesia in oriental fire-bellied toads. The average duration of surgical anae

Ketamine/midazolam versus etomidate/fentanyl: procedural sedation for pediatric orthopedic reductions.

BACKGROUND: Orthopedic reductions are commonly performed procedures requiring sedation in the pediatric emergency department (PED). Ketamine is a widely used agent for pediatric procedural sedation, but its use may present difficulties in select populations, such as those with psychiatric diagnoses. In such a case, alternative agents that are safe and effective are needed. Etomidate is a commonly used induction agent for rapid-sequence intubation in the PED. Several retrospective and few prospective studies support etomidate's safety and efficacy in pediatric procedural sedation. OBJECTIVE: T

Pulmonary function and tissue oxygenation studies during anesthetic induction with etomidate.

The modifications of pulmonary function and peripheral oxygenation arising during anesthetic induction with Etomidate were studied in 36 unpremedicated patients programmed for elective surgery. The evaluation was carried out through measurement of ventilatory parameters and of the blood gases and oxygen saturation in arterial and mixed venous blood, calculation of the cardiac output, and derivation of data of peripheral oxygenation. A global reduction of the minute volume was observed with a minimal effect on the blood-gas values. The arterial blood oxygenation was reduced during the anesthesi

Traceability of etomidate and its analogs in biological samples using "specific" metabolites.

With the regulation of etomidate (ETO), criminals continue to use chemical modifications to derive various ETO analogues as substitutes to enter the illegal market in order to evade punishment, and the phenomenon of substitution abuse is becoming increasingly serious. After these substitutes are ingested by the human body, the prototype drug is almost undetectable in the biological samples. It is necessary to search for "characteristic" metabolite traceability prototype drugs to effectively prevent misjudgment of cases. The fragmentation patterns and metabolites of seven ETO analogs were analy

The need to monitor emerging issues in etomidate usage: the misuse or abuse potential.

Since 2011, the misuse or abuse of etomidate has gradually increased when propofol was designated a controlled drug under the Narcotics Control Act in Korea. Accordingly, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced that etomidate would be under the 'Regulation on the designation of drugs that may cause concerns of misuse or abuse' rule in June 2020, which is less stringent than the Narcotics Control Act. Therefore, this review investigates potential misuse or abuse cases of etomidate to consider strengthening its management. A literature search was conducted to compare etomidate with other

Etomidate, Adrenal Insufficiency and Mortality Associated With Severity of Illness: A Meta-Analysis.

PURPOSE: Etomidate causes adrenal insufficiency. Yet in critically ill patients, it is controversial whether it increases mortality rates above that of comparator anesthetic induction agents. We postulated that etomidate would increase relative mortality rates correspondingly to the severity of illness as defined by SAPS or APACHE scores. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature search was performed on Pub Med, SCOPUS, and Cochrane Reviews for human studies, regardless of language, between 1983 and February 2020. The search strategy used keywords, "etomidate," "adrenal insufficiency," "glucocortic

Intravenous dezocine pretreatment reduces the incidence and intensity of myoclonus induced by etomidate.

To evaluate the suppressive effect of intravenous dezocine on the incidence and severity of myoclonic movements induced by etomidate, a total of 80 patients, American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I-II, were randomized into two equally sized groups (n = 40). These two groups were assigned to give either intravenous dezocine 0.1 mg/kg or a matching placebo (equal volume of 0.9% saline) 30 s before administration of etomidate. For anesthesia induction, 0.3 mg/kg etomidate was injected over a period of 1 min. One minute after etomidate administration, the severity of myoclonus was
