Topical Application of Adult Cecal Contents to Eggs Transplants Spore-Forming Microbiota but Not Other Members of the Microbiota to Chicks.

The intestinal microbiota plays an essential role in the metabolism and immune competence of chickens from the first day after hatching. In modern production systems, chicks are isolated from adult chickens, instead hatching in a clean environment. As a result, chicks are colonized by environmental bacteria, including potential pathogens. There is a need to investigate methods by which chicks can be exposed to a more appropriate microbial community at hatching. Such methods must be easy to apply in a hatchery and produce consistent results. The development of the intestinal microbiota of chick

Campylobacter concisus utilizes blood but not short chain fatty acids despite showing associations with Firmicutes taxa.

Campylobacter concisus is a member of the oral microbiota that has been associated with the development of inflammatory bowel diseases. However, the role of the bacterium in disease aetiology remains poorly understood. Here, we examine optimal conditions for the growth of C. concisus, and the pathogenic potential of this bacterium in human gastrointestinal cells from the upper tract. Further, the presence of C. concisus in the lower tract of Crohn's disease (CD) patients undergoing therapy is observed, and the associations of C. concisus with the abundance of other microbial taxa and compounds

Properties of the Isolated Strain of Pseudobutyrivibrio sp. and Its Effect on the Alleviation of Allergic Dermatitis in a Mouse Model.

Microbial properties of the strain MDT-5, which was isolated from the rumen of a goat, were investigated. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that MDT-5 belongs to the family Lachnospiraceae with the highest homology to Pseudobutyrivibrio ruminis DSM 9787T. However, on the basis of the phenotypic differences between MDT-5 and P. ruminis DSM 9787T, MDT-5 was identified as a Pseudobutyrivibrio sp. MDT-5 is able to generate conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) from linoleic acid (LA), and its ability was high enough to compete for LA with other bacteria in the host intestinal tract. Wh

Filifactor alocis Pathogenicity Requires TLR2 and the Oral Microbiome.

Enrichment of the oral microorganism Filifactor alocis is strongly associated with the progression of periodontitis. However, F. alocis is part of a complex dysbiotic microbial community, and the organism's direct pathogenic potential remains uncharacterized. Using the oral gavage model of experimental periodontitis, we revealed that F. alocis promotes alveolar bone loss, as well as significant overexpression of proinflammatory markers associated with osteoclastogenesis and inflammation in oral tissues. Interestingly, despite colonizing in low abundance, F. alocis infection promoted the pertur

The intestinal mucosa-associated microbiota in IBD-associated arthritis displays lower relative abundance of Roseburia intestinalis.

The most common extra-intestinal manifestation (EIM) of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), IBD-associated arthritis (IAA), occurs in 25-40% of patients and can be debilitating. In IBD, mucosal and stool microbiota richness is decreased, and compositional changes can precede or accompany disease onset. Likewise, spondyloarthritides are associated with altered gut microbiota, with overlapping bacterial signatures observed in IBD, suggesting key shared microbial factors are involved in both conditions. Much has been learned about the role of the intestinal microbiome in IBD, but less is known rega

Sequence similarity network analysis of drug- and dye-modifying azoreductase enzymes found in the human gut microbiome.

Drug metabolism by human gut microbes is often exemplified by azo bond reduction in the anticolitic prodrug sulfasalazine. Azoreductase activity is often found in incubations with cell cultures or ex vivo gut microbiome samples and contributes to the xenobiotic metabolism of drugs and food additives. Applying metagenomic studies to personalized medicine requires knowledge of the genes responsible for sulfasalazine and other drug metabolism, and candidate genes and proteins for drug modifications are understudied. A representative gut-abundant azoreductase from Anaerotignum lactatifermentan DSM

Increased abundance of Ruminococcus gnavus in gut microbiota is associated with moyamoya disease and non-moyamoya intracranial large artery disease.

Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a rare cerebrovascular disease endemic in East Asia. The p.R4810K mutation in RNF213 gene confers a risk of MMD, but other factors remain largely unknown. We tested the association of gut microbiota with MMD. Fecal samples were collected from 27 patients with MMD, 7 patients with non-moyamoya intracranial large artery disease (ICAD) and 15 control individuals with other disorders, and 16S rRNA were sequenced. Although there was no difference in alpha diversity or beta diversity between patients with MMD and controls, the cladogram showed Streptococcaceae was enriched

Co-Enrichment of Desulfovibrio and Erysipelotrichaceae and Dysregulation of Multiple Amino Acid Pathways in HFpEF: Insights into TXG-Associated Metabolic Changes.

Gut enrichment of Desulfovibrio and Erysipelotrichaceae may be associated with systemic amino acid metabolic dysfunction, myocardial injury, and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). These taxa appear to influence host amino acid metabolism through distinct processes, but the functional implications of their co-enrichment in HFpEF remain unclear. Total xanthones from Gentianella acuta (TXG) have documented cardioprotective effects, although their effects on gut microbiota and systemic metabolism remain unexplored. We established a mouse model of HFpEF using a high-fat diet (H

A case of Robinsoniella peoriensis bacteremia during using piperacillin-tazobactam.

Infections caused by Robinsoniella peoriensis, particularly bacteremia, are rare, of which only six cases were reported R. peoriensis bloodstream infections. This case report describes an instance of R. peoriensis bacteremia arising while we treated the patient with piperacillin-tazobactam. We treated an 84-year-old female patient with peritoneal carcinoma and febrile neutropenia using piperacillin-tazobactam. The patient's fever subsided. However, she developed a fever again on the fourth day of treatment with piperacillin-tazobactam. Blood cultures taken at this time were positive for R. peo

No Evidence of a Genetic Causal Relationship between Ankylosing Spondylitis and Gut Microbiota: A Two-Sample Mendelian Randomization Study.

Objective: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is associated with a variety of gut microbiotas. We aim to analyze the causal relationship between the two at the genetic level. Methods: Mendelian randomization (MR) is a type of instrumental variables (IVs) analysis; MR follows the Mendelian genetic rule of "parental alleles are randomly assigned to offspring" and takes genetic variation as IVs to infer the causal association between exposure factors and study outcome in observational studies. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary data of AS were from the FinnGen consortium, and the gut microbiot

Gut microbiota and pediatric patients with spina bifida and neurogenic bowel dysfunction.

PURPOSE: Gut microbiota has recently been recognized to be influenced by a broad range of pathologies. Alterations of gut microbiota are known as dysbiosis and have found to be related to chronic constipation, a condition which affects also pediatric patients with spina bifida (SB). METHODS: In this study, gut microbiota richness and composition were investigated by 16S rRNA sequencing and bioinformatic analysis in 48 SB patients (mean age, 11.9 ± 4.8 years) with secondary neurogenic constipation and 32 healthy controls (mean age, 18.0 ± 9.6 years). The study also aimed at exploring eventual

Functional and Genomic Variation between Human-Derived Isolates of Lachnospiraceae Reveals Inter- and Intra-Species Diversity.

Bacteria belonging to the Lachnospiraceae family are abundant, obligate anaerobic members of the microbiota in healthy humans. Lachnospiraceae impact their hosts by producing short-chain fatty acids, converting primary to secondary bile acids, and facilitating colonization resistance against intestinal pathogens. To increase our understanding of genomic and functional diversity between members of this family, we cultured 273 Lachnospiraceae isolates representing 11 genera and 27 species from human donors and performed whole-genome sequencing assembly and annotation. This analysis revealed subs

Effect of inoculum history, growth substrates and yeast extract addition on inhibition of Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans by NaCl.

This study reports on the effect of inoculum history, growth substrates, and yeast extract on sodium chloride tolerance of Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans DSM 9293T. The concentrations of NaCl for complete inhibition of Fe2+ oxidation by cells initially grown with ferrous iron sulfate, or tetrathionate, or pyrite as energy sources were 525 mM, 725 mM, and 800 mM, respectively. Noticeably, regardless of NaCl concentrations, oxygen consumption rates of S. thermosulfidooxidans with 20 mM tetrathionate were higher than with 50 mM FeSO4. NaCl concentrations of higher than 400 mM strongly inhibit
