Le premier siècle: one hundred years of progress in the treatment of Apert syndrome.

The year 2006 marked the 100th anniversary of the publication of Eugene Apert's article, De l'acrocephalosyndactylie in the Bulletin de la Société des médecins des hôspitaux de Paris. During the last century, much progress has been made in the understanding and treatment of this condition. A translation of Apert's original article is provided as is an overview of what has been learned during the last 100 years and what the future treatment of this condition may be.

Prophylactic Desexualizing Mastectomy for an Intellectually Disabled Woman: Protective Measure or Disregard for Autonomy?

Historically, sterilization of the so-called feeble-minded has been advocated in the name of eugenics. Surrogate decision-making that impacts sexuality of the intellectually disabled presents significant ethical dilemmas. We describe a 19-year-old intellectually disabled woman who presented with her legal decision-maker for surgical correction of her asymmetric chest and hypoplastic breast. The decision-maker requested a mastectomy to make the patient's breasts as inconspicuous as possible, and to reduce the risk of sexual assault and pregnancy. This case covers the ethical considerations on w

[Air sac midwifery technique for shortening course of labor].

Air sac midwifery technique is developed in this hospital to cut down the duration of labor (birth process). A special small sac is placed inside the ripe cervix and vagina of women of term pregnancy, and aerated slowly till a positive pressure of 16-25 kPa is reached. The cervix can be dilated to 6 to 8 cm, and the vagina 10 to 12 cm in 1 to 2 minutes. The labor course may be cut down by 8 to 10 hours, thus relieving the parturient from pain, lessening perineal laceration and perinatal mortality which is important for eugenics sake.

Targeted Wastewater Surveillance during the World Athletics Championship, Oregon, USA, 2022.

Targeted wastewater surveillance during the 18th World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA, in 2022 detected influenza A virus, SARS-CoV-2, and hepatitis A virus. Poliovirus detections were inconclusive. Influenza B, hepatitis E, and measles viruses and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus were not detected. Wastewater surveillance augments traditional surveillance to mitigate risks associated with large multinational gatherings.

Pancreatic islet amyloid in type 2 diabetes mellitus: a clinical and historical review.

In 1901 Eugene L. Opie, MD, a Dean of Washington University School of Medicine (Figure 1) described the histologic presence of amyloid within the pancreatic islets of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Although amyloid is present in at least 70 percent of type 2 diabetic patients, the subject has not been clinically emphasized. This paper reviews the history of Opie's discovery and current clinical implications of islet amyloid.

A study of 49 sterilized females.

Forty-nine women sterilized for eugenic, medical or socioeconomic reasons were studied in the Outpatients Department of a Women's Hospital. Results indicate that in a considerable proportion of cases, physical as well as mental condition was negatively affected. The most significant factors which influenced the outcome of the operation were the personality of the subjects and the reasons for which they were sterilized. It is emphasized that before this operation is undertaken, a full psychiatric assessment should be performed and a social report obtained.

Sterilization in Alberta, 1928 to 1972: gender matters.

Alberta, Canada, passed a Sexual Sterilization Act in 1928 and up until its repeal in 1972, over 2,800 people were sterilized. Women were overrepresented in the number of sterilizations performed. This paper explores how changing understandings of eugenics led to a subtle transformation which resulted in a "two-pronged" system that targeted mentally defective men, often a danger to society, and mentally normal but morally abnormal women who consented to sterilization. The end result was success for the movement in terms of the types and numbers of people sterilized, and in the longevity of the

The medical exclusion of an immigrant to the United States of America in the early twentieth century. The case of Cristina Imparato.

The medical inspection of immigrants arriving in the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was framed by a need to rapidly process large numbers of people. Scientific medicine, such as it was then, was subordinate to the existing immigration laws which reflected the influences of the powerful anti-immigration forces of eugenics and nativism. The line, or single-file queues in which immigrants were arranged, facilitated rapid processing. The split-second medical gaze was hailed by the then leadership of the U.S. Public Health Service as scientifically sound, based a

The description of epileptic seizures in the classical opera.

Epilepsy or epileptic seizures have only rarely been described in the classical opera. Four operas were detected, in which epileptic seizures are described also by musical means. Three of them ("Der Golem" by Eugen d'Albert; "Idiot" by Mieczyslaw Weinberg; "Otello" by Giuseppe Verdi) describe a generalized tonic-clonic epileptic seizure by a descending chromatic scale. One opera ("The turn of the screw" by Benjamin Britten) describes temporal lobe seizures by overtone music played by the instrument celesta.

"Prototypic personality disorder" and the social issue: The category of psychopathy in Polish psychiatry in the interwar period.

The category of psychopathy has a long history, and its meaning has undergone a notable evolution since its conception in the 19th century. The history of psychopathy has been concentrating mainly on English- and German-speaking psychopathology. This article investigates definitions of psychopathy, its classification, and social issues associated with this category in Polish psychiatry in the interwar period. Polish definitions of psychopathy were influenced predominantly by Ernst Kretschmer's constitutional theory as well as by Eugen Kahn's, William Stern's, and Kurt Schneider's ideas. The te

Bruno Schulz and his 1926 Article: "Regarding the Problem of Determining Hereditary Prognosis. The Affliction Prospects for Nephews and Nieces of Schizophrenics".

Authored by one of Rüdin's most productive colleagues, Bruno Schulz, the main goal of this article was to estimate risk for dementia praecox (DP) in nieces/nephews (n/n) of DP probands to address practical questions for genetic counseling. Schulz selected 76 primary probands from records of the genealogical department of the German Research Institute of Psychiatry who both had DP and had siblings-secondary probands-with children aged 20 years or greater. Those children had a morbid risk for DP of 1.4%, much lower than that found in the offspring of DP in Hoffmann's study. However, the secondar

Made, Not Begotten: IVF and the Right to Life Under Conditions.

UNLABELLED: In a society in which the decoupling of sexuality and human reproduction has become normal, In vitro fertilization (IVF) has mutated into a kind of standard procedure. There is little awareness of the ethical ruptures that the mechanization of human reproduction causes. The basic ethical problem with extracorporeal fertilization in a test tube is that a child is not conceived through the personal union of a man and a woman, but is "produced" in a laboratory. In the context of human creation, this entails a series of ethical problems. The technique does not merely offer another poss

[Obstetric interventionism and maternalization ofwomen in childbirth care in Uruguay, 1920-1940].

This article analyzes the speeches of leading doctors in the creation of the specialty in childbirth care: gynecotology. Between 1920 and 1940, under the influence of eugenic and maternalist thinking, in a context of valuing the well-being of children, medicine built a new obstetric interventionism under the foundation of improving fetal viability. The supposed female "maternal instinct" was, thus, appealed to improve acceptance of the medical mandate. At the same time, doctors recognized their difficulties in providing adequate care. They did not wait long enough and tended to intervene in un

Devic disease: clinical course, pathophysiology, and management.

Devic disease is characterized by an attack or attacks of optic neuritis and necrotizing myelitis without clinical or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evidence of brain involvement or presence of oligoclonal bands in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). More than a century after its first systematic study by the French physician, Eugene Devic, its cause as well as its pathogenesis, remains unknown. Devic disease is both a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge to clinicians. The authors present the latest review on the nature, course, possible mechanisms, and therapeutic options of Devic disease.

Disability advocacy and reproductive choice: engaging with the expressivist objection.

This professional issues paper outlines the experience and value of engagement with disability advocates, philosophy scholars and bioethicists for spirited debate of issues such as modern eugenics, the expressivist objection and reproductive choice. This process for one group of individuals, undoubtedly prompted deeper examination and questioning of some long held personal and professional views, for all participants. For this author, engagement in the "Disability Rights-Genetic Counseling Interest Group" over a full year resulted in several positive changes in genetic counselling practice as

The experience of beta-thalassaemiaand its prevention in Cyprus.

Haemoglobinopathies are a series of hereditary genetic diseases which, if left untreated, usually prove fatal. The present paper discusses how one of the most important of these, beta-thalassaemia, afflicted the island of Cyprus in the last century and almost threatened to eliminate the whole population. In narrating the medical facts of the disease we point out the moral dilemmas which medical personnel, the state and the church had to deal with before they embarked on a program for the treatment and prevention of beta-thalassaemia. After careful study of the program we conclude that, althoug

Follmann balanitis in secondary syphilis.

Syphilitic balanitis is an uncommon rather underreported manifestation of primary syphilis initially described by Eugene Follmann and subsequently named after him. It is characterized by balanitis with or without a primary chancre and inguinal lymphadenopathy. Given its rarity, Follmann balanitis may be misdiagnosed with other causes of balanitis. Therefore, a strong clinical suspicion and awareness are crucial, particularly in the current resurgence of syphilis. With this background, we hereby report a case of Follmann balanitis in secondary syphilis, diagnosed based on clinical features, pos
