Gastroduodenal Involvement in Asymptomatic Crohn's Disease Patients in Two Areas of Emerging Disease: Asia and Eastern Europe.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of Crohn's disease [CD] is increasing in Asia and Eastern Europe. Limited studies have reported on the frequency of upper gastrointestinal [GI] involvement in patients with CD in non-Western countries. This prospective study compared the rate of macroscopic and microscopic upper GI manifestations and Helicobacter pylori positivity in asymptomatic CD patients in Asia and Eastern Europe. METHODS: Consecutive asymptomatic CD patients were prospectively recruited for upper GI endoscopy between 2013 and 2015 in Hong Kong and in Hungary. Endoscopy and biopsy findings were

Co-Occurrence of Intimate Partner Violence Against Mothers and Maltreatment of Their Children With Behavioral Problems in Eastern Europe.

This study investigates the co-occurrence of intimate partner violence (IPV) against mothers and their risk of perpetrating child maltreatment (CM) in North Macedonia, the Republic of Moldova, and Romania. Risk factors for IPV, CM, and their co-occurrence were identified. Two samples (N1 = 112, N2 = 701) of mothers with children with behavioral problems were assessed. IPV was reported by 64% of mothers, CM by 96%, and their co-occurrence by 63%. Mothers exposed to emotional IPV reported more physical and emotional CM. Mothers exposed to physical IPV reported more physical CM. Motheŕs own histo

Multicenter assessment of sedation and delirium practices in the intensive care units in Poland - is this common practice in Eastern Europe?

BACKGROUND: The majority of critically ill patients experience distress during their stay in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), resulting from systemic illness, multiple interventions and environmental factors. Providing humane care should address concomitant treatment of pain, agitation and delirium. The use of sedation and approaches to ICU delirium should be monitored according to structured guidelines. However, it is unknown to what extent these concepts are followed in Eastern European countries like Poland. The aim of this study was to evaluate sedation and delirium practices in ICUs in Pola

A High Burden of Ischemic Stroke in Regions of Eastern/Central Europe is Largely Due to Modifiable Risk Factors.

Incidence and mortality of ischemic stroke in Croatia is significantly higher than in many other developed European countries. Here, we aimed to evaluate underlying conditions of this unacceptably high disease burden. An observational prospective cohort study of first-ever ischemic stroke patients identified in a population-based incidence study (N=751) (study 1, S1) and a concurrent case-control trial (215 patients, 125 controls, S2) were conducted in the county of Varazdin from 2007-2010. Atrial fibrillation (AF) was common (36.1% in S1, 40.9% in S2) and mostly (>50%) unrecognized before the

Vein of Galen Malformation-Experience of the Last 13 Years in a Reference Center from South-Eastern Europe.

The vein of Galen malformations (VoGMs) is mainly correlated with the retention of an embryonic pattern of vascularity, inducer of vein of Galen dilation, and formation of arteriovenous communications that give rise to the risk of systemic shunting, causing cardiac dysfunction, vascular steal, and venous hypertension. This is a rare cerebral vascular malformation in the newborn, accounting for 1% of all cerebral arteriovenous malformations and occurring in approximately 1 in 25,000-50,000 live births. We review nine cases of newborns diagnosed with vein of Galen malformations (VoGMs) to assess

Ten Years of Euromelanoma in Hungary: Nationwide Trends and Risk Factors for Skin Cancer in Central-Eastern Europe.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Large-scale, country-specific data on skin cancer predictors are scarce in Hungary. The Euromelanoma campaign offers a decade-long opportunity to investigate constitutional, behavioral, and motivational risk factors in a Central European setting through a national cross-sectional analysis. METHODS: Between 2009 and 2018, Hungarian participants underwent dermatological screening. Diagnoses of clinically suspicious skin cancers were based on dermoscopic assessment, as histopathological confirmation was not systematically available. Among 18,598 standardized surveys, logis

The Association Between HIV Disclosure Status and Perceived Barriers to Care Faced by Women Living with HIV in Latin America, China, Central/Eastern Europe, and Western Europe/Canada.

Generally, women are less likely than men to disclose their HIV status. This analysis examined the relationship between HIV disclosure and (1) perceived barriers to care and (2) quality of life (QoL) for women with HIV. The ELLA (EpidemioLogical study to investigate the popuLation and disease characteristics, barriers to care, and quAlity of life for women living with HIV) study enrolled HIV-positive women aged ≥18 years. Women completed the 12-item Barriers to Care Scale (BACS) questionnaire. QoL was assessed using the Health Status Assessment. BACS and QoL were stratified by dichotomized HIV

Gross Total Resection and Recurrence-Free Survival in Diffuse Gliomas: A Single-Center Cohort Study from Eastern Europe.

Background/Objectives: The independent contribution of extent of resection (EOR) to early recurrence in diffuse gliomas remains debated, as crude analyses are confounded by tumor biology, and real-world data from Eastern European centers are scarce. Methods: We retrospectively studied 283 consecutive adults with surgically treated diffuse gliomas (2021-2024) at a Romanian tertiary center. Primary endpoints were recurrence-free survival (RFS) at 1 and 2 years, evaluated as landmark endpoints; secondary endpoints were overall recurrence, reoperation, and reirradiation. Clinical, histopathologica

The Cervical Cancer Paradox in Eastern Europe: How Knowledge and Institutional Trust Shape HPV Vaccination Attitudes in Romania.

BACKGROUND: Although cervical cancer is a highly preventable malignancy, Romania continues to report critical mortality rates. This paradox is largely attributable to the suboptimal implementation of clinical guidelines and a passive, "opt-in" administrative framework. This cross-sectional study investigates the cognitive and behavioural determinants-specifically, human papillomavirus (HPV) knowledge, institutional trust in healthcare systems, and digital misinformation exposure-that modulate female attitudes toward HPV immunisation. METHODS: An observational cross-sectional study was conduct

Clinically relevant depression in old age: An international study with populations from Canada, Latin America and Eastern Europe.

Our aim is to assess cross-national variations in prevalence of clinically relevant depression and to examine the relationships of social and health factors with depression in five diverse populations of older adults, from Canada, Brazil, Colombia and Albania. We used the data from the International Mobility in Aging Study. Clinically relevant depression was defined as a score of ≥16 on the Center for Epidemiologic Study Depression Scale (CES-D). Poisson regressions with robust covariance correction were used to estimate prevalence ratios associated with potential risk factors. Prevalence of c

The indirect costs of human papillomavirus-related cancer in Central and Eastern Europe: years of life lost and productivity costs.

BACKGROUND: Human papilloma virus (HPV) is a common cause of several types of cancer, including head and neck (oral cavity, pharynx, oropharynx, hypopharynx, nasopharynx, and larynx), cervical, vulval, vaginal, anal, and penile cancers. As HPV vaccines are available, there is potential to prevent HPV-related disease burden and related costs. METHOD: A model was developed for nine Central Eastern European (CEE) countries (Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia). This model considered cancer patients who died from 11 HPV-related cancers (oropharynx, ora

HIV disease metrics and COVID-19 infection severity and outcomes in people living with HIV in central and eastern Europe.

BACKGROUND: To date there remains much ambiguity in the literature regarding the immunological interplay between SARS-CoV-2 and HIV and the true risk posed to coinfected individuals. There has been little conclusive data regarding the use of CD4 cell count and HIV viral load stratification as predictors of COVID-19 severity in this cohort. METHODS: We performed a retrospective, observational cohort study on people living with HIV (PLWH) who contracted COVID-19 in central and eastern Europe. We enrolled 536 patients from 16 countries using an online survey. We evaluated patient demographics, H

Some Manifestations of Tuberculosis in Otorhinolaryngology - Case Series and a Short Review of Related Data from South-Eastern Europe.

Tuberculosis is a disease of global outreach that may affect the entire human body but is most commonly located in the lungs. Otorhinolaryngological manifestations of tuberculosis are rare, mostly occurring secondary to pulmonary disease but nevertheless represent significant diagnostic challenges. Nasopharyngeal tuberculosis is rare, representing around 1% of all upper air-way localizations and the most common presentation is in the form of adenoids. Tuberculous glossitis (oral tuberculosis) is even scarcer and may present in various clinical forms, usually mimicking a malignant neoplasm, or,
