Adverse event following live attenuated chikungunya vaccine in a cynomolgus macaque with pre-existing chronic hydrocephalus.

A cynomolgus macaque (Macaca fascicularis) with a pre-existing, undiagnosed, subclinical but severe cerebral hydrocephalus was enrolled in a study of long-term immunogenicity of the IRES/CHIK vaccine. The animal began showing signs of neurological dysfunction post-vaccination, which progressed and ultimately resulted in euthanasia. The underlying brain abnormality was revealed at necropsy and was subsequently investigated with gross and microscopic examination. This becomes the first reported case of an adverse event following administration of a live attenuated vaccine and suggests the possib

Physiology, behaviour and welfare of fish during recreational fishing and after release.

This review investigates how recreational fishing affects the physiology, behaviour, and welfare of fish. Sentience and the capacity of fish to experience pain, suffering and fear are discussed, and practical recommendations for improving the treatment of fish during recreational fishing are provided. Handling procedures used in recreational fishing should match the environment where the fish is caught and the size and strength of the fish. Minimising the number of hooks on lures and baits, and using barbless hooks and circle hooks generally reduce rates of injury and the severity of tissue tr

[Morphological studies in different avian species on artefacts induced by euthanasia with T 61 " or Pentobarbital (Narcoren)].

In mammals (e. g. macaques, dogs, cats, rats, sheep) as well as in men (suicides) euthanasia performed by intravenous injection of T 61 leads to serious lesions in lung, kidney or/and liver (endothelial damage, hyperemia, oedema, necrosis). This is caused by the solvent dimethylformamide (DMF). In this study, in contrast, in different species of birds (e. g. blackbird, carrion crow, kestrel, common buzzard, homer pigeon, common wood pigeon, mallard duck) and various modes of applications and dosages T 61, 1.0-3.0 ml/kg body mass, did not induce comparable artefacts in tissues of internal organ

Assessment of xylazine for euthanasia of anoles (Anolis carolinensis and Anolis distichus).

Intracoelomic (IC) injection of xylazine was evaluated as a chemical euthanasia method for Anolis lizards (Anolis carolinensis or Anolis distichus). Lizards were allocated into 5 groups of 10 animals each. Each group was euthanized by one of these methods: 10 mg xylazine (100 mg/mL) IC; 10 mg xylazine and 0.5 mg acepromazine (10 mg/mL) IC; 10 mg xylazine IC followed by intracardiac injection of 0.1 mEq KCl (2 mEq/mL) once heart beats were no longer discernable by Doppler; 500 mg/kg 1% NaCO(3)-buffered MS222 solution IC followed by IC injection of 0.1 mL unbuffered 50% (v/v) MS222 solution (exp

Does Blast Medium Affect Heterotopic Ossification in a Blast-amputation Model?

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) develops after nearly 2/3 of traumatic blast amputations in the contemporary battlefield. This phenomenon has potentially devastating consequences for servicemen and women and its pathophysiology warrants further investigation using a previously developed animal blast model. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We asked, what is the (1) severity (quantity) and (2) type (location) of HO bone formation after a hindlimb blast amputation with two distinct blast media. We hypothesized that a more "war-relevant" blast medium could be a more accurate model and potentially in

Unilateral proptosis and orbital cellulitis in eight African hedgehogs (Atelerix albiventris).

Eight African hedgehogs (Atelerix albiventris) were presented with unilateral proptosis. Six animals presented specifically for an ocular problem, whereas two had concurrent neurologic disease. Enucleation and light microscopic examination of tissues was performed in five animals, and euthanasia followed by complete postmortem examination was performed in three animals. Histopathologic findings in all hedgehogs included orbital cellulitis, panophthalmitis, and corneal ulceration, with perforation in seven of eight eyes. The etiology of the orbital cellulitis was not determined, but it appeared

An Atypical Case of Mycobacterium bovis in a Cynomolgus Macaque (Macaca fascicularis) Imported From the Philippines.

An incidental case of Mycobacterium bovis was confirmed in a cynomolgus macaque from a shipment of 100 animals imported to the University of Southwestern Louisiana New Iberia Research Center from the Philippines. The macaque was euthanized 4 weeks into the quarantine period (October 1997) for failure to thrive and suspected melioidosis. Approximately 6 months later, on 9 March 1998, culture and antigenic probes from kidney tissues identified the etiologic agent as M. bovis. Five remaining cohort animals were euthanized after we obtained the results from the index case. Kidney tissues from two

Non-ambulatory pigs in two Brazilian growing-finishing farms: a clinic, etiological and pathological perspective on 76 cases.

BACKGROUND: Non-ambulatory pigs, colloquially known as downers or downed pigs, are animals presented with limited to no mobility, usually as a result of pre-existing neurologic or musculoskeletal conditions. Impaired ambulation is a major cause of euthanasia in pigs, leading to economic losses and animal welfare concerns. Additionally, reaching the underlying diagnosis of impaired ambulation in pigs is commonly a challenging task for swine practitioners. The aim of this necropsy-based study was to report the clinical, etiological, and pathological findings of 76 non-ambulatory grower-finisher

Effect of pentoxifylline and α-tocopherol on medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw in rats: Before and after dental extraction.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the effect of pentoxifylline and α-tocopherol administration in the prevention or treatment of medication-related jaw osteonecrosis (MRONJ). METHODOLOGY: Sixty Wistar rats were divided into three prevention (C-prev, BP-prev and BP/PT-prev) and three treatment groups (C-treat, BP-treat and BP/PT-treat), n = 10. The animals in the BP-prev, BP/PT-prev, BP-treat and BP/PT-treat groups received zoledronic acid (0.1 mg/kg) for 12 weeks, while the animals in the C-prev and C-treat groups received saline solution. At week 6, all animals underwent tooth extraction. Between week 5 a

[Malignant hyperthermia in swine during isoflurane anesthesia].

A case of porcine malignant hyperthermia (MH) is reported, which occurred during a cardiological animal experiment under general anaesthesia using isoflurane as inhalational anaesthetic. Initially, tachycardia (238 bpm) and a sudden increase of end-exspiratory pCO2 were noticed. Discontinuation of isoflurane followed by administration of dantrolene (7 mg/kg body weight) led to a rapid recovery. Two days later, no difference in clinical state was apparent in comparison with the remaining swine. After regular euthanasia, acute muscle necrosis was seen macroscopically in back and glutaeal muscles

Interrupted Lives: Welfare Considerations in Wildlife Rehabilitation.

Each year in the United States, thousands of sick, injured, or displaced wild animals are presented to individuals or organizations who have either a federal or state permit that allows them to care for these animals with the goal of releasing them back to the wild. The purpose of this review is to demonstrate the complexity of considerations rehabilitators and veterinarians face while trying to optimize the welfare of wild animals in need of care and rehabilitation. The process of rehabilitation is inherently stressful for wildlife. Maintaining an animal's welfare during the rehabilitation pr

Haemorrhages in head tissues during the asphyxiation process.

Two rates of carbon dioxide flow into the termination chamber were applied for the euthanasia of rats. The classical phases of asphyxia were observed in both groups of animals although their course was prolonged in rats exposed to the lower gas flow. The haemorrhages were assessed histologically in the following structures: the pericranium, compact bone and diploë of the skull, sagittal suture, nape muscle and its attachment, and the dura. The haemorrhages appeared regularly in the sagittal suture in all cases from both experimental groups. The possible significance of this phenomenon for the

Hypertrophic osteopathy in three horses and a pony.

Hypertrophic osteopathy was diagnosed in 3 horses and in a pony, ranging in age from 8 to 21 years. There were 2 females, 1 sexually intact male, and 1 gelding. In 3 animals, hypertrophic osteopathy was associated with pulmonary abscesses, bronchogenic squamous cell carcinoma, and ovarian granulosa-cell tumor, respectively, and resulted in death or euthanasia. Duration of the condition ranged from 1 to 4 months. In 1 horse, hypertrophic osteopathy was believed to be secondary to pregnancy, and resolved following uncomplicated delivery of a live foal.

On-farm mortality and related risk factors in Estonian dairy cows.

Mortality (unassisted death and euthanasia) reflects the health and welfare state of the cows and is associated with undesirable financial consequences for the farmer. The objective of this retrospective observational study was to identify risk factors associated with on-farm mortality in dairy cows. Data for a study period between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2015 were retrieved from the Estonian Agricultural Registers and Information Board and Estonian Livestock Performance Recording, Ltd. Cows from milk-recording herds with ≥20 cow-years were included. Analyses included data of 86,459 p

Animal shelter management of feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus infections in cats.

Approximately 5% of cats in animal shelters in the United States test positive for either feline leukemia virus (FeLV) or feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), which translates to more than 100,000 positive cats managed by shelters each year. Little is known about the current status of retroviral management in animal shelters, particularly in regions burdened by chronic pet overpopulation and high shelter admissions, such as the southern United States. The purpose of this study was to describe feline retroviral management in Florida shelters. Shelters were surveyed on practices including select

Control and Prevention of Epizootic Lymphangitis in Mules: An Integrated Community-Based Intervention, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.

From 2010 to 2017, as part of a wider animal welfare program, The Donkey Sanctuary piloted an integrated, community-based model for the control and prevention of epizootic lymphangitis (EZL) in cart mules in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. Stakeholders included muleteers, service providers, and transport and animal health regulatory authorities. Interventions included muleteer education, wound prevention, harness improvement, animal health professional training, treatment of early EZL cases, euthanasia for advanced cases, and review of transport services and traffic guidelines. The project followed a par

"Dying alone and being eaten": dog scavenging on the remains of an elderly animal hoarder-a case report.

Animal hoarding and human consumption by dogs have been important but often understudied aspects of the human-animal bond that can be addressed within a One Health framework. No scientific report has focused on dog scavenging on animal hoarders to date, despite isolated reports of dog scavenging on human remains, mostly due to starvation. The phenomenon has been approached as a confounding factor for human forensics. In 2014, the Animal Protection Department of Curitiba City was called to rescue and handle ten small dogs which had scavenged for a week on the human remains of their elderly owne

Assessment of three large-scale depopulation methods for swine.

The threat of foreign animal disease outbreaks to U.S. swine herds warrants effective and readily available depopulation methods. Current American Veterinary Medical Association-recommendations using preferred physical methods for swine depopulation are unsuitable for large commercial swine herds. Our objectives were to assess and compare the efficacy and performance of three suggested large-scale depopulation methods: 1) medium-expansion water-based foam, 2) prototype high-expansion nitrogen foam and, 3) carbon dioxide gas for finisher pigs under field conditions. Out of 793 finisher pigs inc
