Effectiveness of mineral trioxide aggregate on postoperative pain in non-surgical endodontic treatment: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials.

INTRODUCTION: Postoperative endodontic pain can negatively influence the quality of life of the patients. Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) has gained attention as a potential medicament in various endodontic procedures. MTA has been shown to have desirable properties such as biocompatibility, marginal adaptation, and sealing ability compared to other materials. Limited evidence is available about the effectiveness of MTA on the reduction of postoperative pain following endodontic treatment. This article aimed to compare the non-surgical post-endodontic pain-relieving effect of MTA compared wit

Critical review of some dogmas in prosthodontics.

PURPOSE: In prosthodontics like in other dental disciplines there are many clinical procedures that lack support of good evidence, which means that the effect is unknown, and even worse, we do not know if they do more good than harm. It is the aim of this paper to review current evidence for selected procedures based on a scrutiny of the prosthodontic literature. STUDY SELECTION: A MEDLINE/PubMed search was conducted for articles on the selected items with a focus on best available evidence. RESULTS: Many "old truths" regarding prosthodontic interventions can be called dogmas, opinions based

[Quality dental care: a complex subject].

Assessing the quality of dental care depends on the approach. From the patient's perspective the perception of the quality of care depends as much on the pure technical quality of the treatment as on the level of patient - doctor communication, organisation and administration experienced in relation to the treatment. From the point of view of the dental professionals who tend to focus primarily on outcome of treatment on the other hand, this way of patient's judging integrated quality of care might be quite frustrating. After all, thanks to verbal and organisational skills, making good impress

Dentistry in the 21st century: challenges of a globalising world.

Oral health is - literally - vital to good general health, not least because the mouth is the sentinel of the body. Dentistry, the Cinderella of health care, faces immense challenges of globalisation. Governments, having spent freely on everything from defence to social security, face mountains of debts which make budget cutbacks essential. Simultaneously, most developed countries have to pay increasing costs of caring for rapidly ageing populations. Dentistry is being pulled two ways: wealthy members of society demand high-end expensive treatment, much of it cosmetic rather than necessary to

Class II Skeletal Growth Modification Treatment: Has Hope Triumphed Over Evidence?

The hierarchy of evidence in the health sciences is primarily determined by study methodology and avoidance of systematic bias. As such, the systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials sits at the top of the evidence pyramid while case studies, anecdotes, and personal opinions are located at its base. Ideally, clinical practice guidelines and reference manuals should be developed with this hierarchy in mind and clearly state what level of evidence supports any given clinical recommendation. When there is inadequate evidence to guide a clinical recommendation, we need to
