Moxibustion therapy on myofascial pain syndrome: An evidence-based clinical practice guideline.

BACKGROUND: Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a chronic systemic pain disorder. Among the common treatments, moxibustion has an irreplaceable therapeutic effect and is an effective Traditional Chinese Medicine therapy for MPS. However, the lack of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) has prompted the publication of guidelines on the use of moxibustion in the treatment of MPS. METHODS: The clinical practice guideline will base on the Institute of Medicine, the World Health Organization guideline handbook, the Grade of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation the Appraisal of Guid

[Lewy body dementia: therapeutic propositions according to evidence based medicine and practice].

Lewy body dementia (LBD) may present with two clinical forms: dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Parkinson's disease with dementia. LBD is characterized by a profound deficiency of acetylcholine and a deficiency of dopamine. The cholinergic deficit is implicated in major attention disorders and fluctuations. Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (donepezil or rivastigmine) were studied in several double-blind placebo-controlled studies. The meta-analyzes show a moderate benefit on the cognitive level and on some psychiatric manifestations including hallucinations. A disabling parkinsonian syndrome

Recurrent pregnancy loss: A summary of international evidence-based guidelines and practice.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) is defined as two or more pregnancy losses. It affects <5% of couples. There are many proposed causes; however, in a significant proportion of cases, the cause is unknown. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to provide a summary of the aetiology, investigations and management of RPL, which is based on the three most recent international guidelines on RPL (European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology, 2017; American Society for Reproductive Medicine, 2012; and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, 2011). Complex trauma in children and adolescents: evidence-based practice in clinical settings.

Complex trauma (CT) results from exposure to severe stressors that occur within the caregiver system or with another presumably responsible adult, are repetitive, and begin in childhood or adolescence. As a result, many of these children and adolescents experience lifelong difficulties related to self-regulation, relationships, psychological symptoms, alterations in attention and consciousness, self-injury, identity, and cognitive distortions. The aims of this article include the following: (a) to examine several representative approaches identified as treatments for children and adolescents e

Meta-analyses and orthodontic evidence-based clinical practice in the 21 century.

INTRODUCTION: Aim of this systematic review was to assess the orthodontic related issues which currently provide the best evidence as documented by meta-analyses, by critically evaluating and discussing the methodology used in these studies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Several electronic databases were searched and handsearching was also performed in order to identify the corresponding meta-analyses investigating orthodontic related subjects. In total, 197 studies were retrieved initially. After applying specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, 27 articles were identified as meta-analyses treatin

Camphor Poisoning: an evidence-based practice guideline for out-of-hospital management.

A review of national poison center data from 1990 through 2003 showed approximately 10,000 annual ingestion exposures to camphor-containing products. A guideline that determines the threshold dose for emergency department referral and need for pre-hospital decontamination could potentially avoid unnecessary emergency department visits, reduce health care costs, optimize patient outcome, and reduce life disruption for patients and caregivers. An evidence-based expert consensus process was used to create the guideline. Relevant articles were abstracted by a trained physician researcher. The firs

Chronic cough due to chronic bronchitis: ACCP evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.

BACKGROUND: Chronic bronchitis is a disease of the bronchi that is manifested by cough and sputum expectoration occurring on most days for at least 3 months of the year and for at least 2 consecutive years when other respiratory or cardiac causes for the chronic productive cough are excluded. The disease is caused by an interaction between noxious inhaled agents (eg, cigarette smoke, industrial pollutants, and other environmental pollutants) and host factors (eg, genetic and respiratory infections) that results in chronic inflammation in the walls and lumen of the airways. As the disease advan

Osteoporosis therapy: an example of putting evidence-based medicine into clinical practice.

A major aim of evidence-based medicine is to assist clinical decision-making by providing the most current and reliable medical information. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses are important tools in this process. Systematic reviews identify and compile relevant evidence, while meta-analyses summarize and quantify the results of such reviews. Results from meta-analyses are, at present, the main source of summary evidence for the efficacy of treatments for a specific condition. They are important tools for helping to choose among treatment options, although they cannot be used to directly comp

Operationalizing Scholarship: A Scaffolded Micro-Credentialing Approach to Evidence-Based Practice Education.

BACKGROUND: Undergraduate nursing students often engage in evidence-based practice (EBP) as a course requirement but have limited opportunities to develop sustained scholarly behaviors. Innovative approaches are needed to operationalize EBP competencies and promote deeper engagement. METHOD: A scaffolded micro-credentialing badge system was implemented in an undergraduate EBP course (N = 91). Six sequential badges aligned with scholarly competencies: critical appraisal, professional communication, scholarly peer review, scholarly writing, scholarly dissemination, and emerging scholar. Corticosteroids in inoperable malignant bowel obstruction: clinical practice based on limited evidence.

Corticosteroids are sometimes used in inoperable malignant bowel obstruction (MBO) despite limited evidence. The main randomised evidence comes from an old Cochrane review totalling 89 patients demonstrating a non-significant trend towards obstruction resolution and no survival benefit. Subsequent literature consists of retrospective and uncontrolled studies failing to control for spontaneous resolution, disease heterogeneity and concomitant therapies. Dose, duration and outcomes are inconsistently reported. Corticosteroid toxicities are potentially harmful. Overall, there are no high-quality

BACKGROUND: Phantom limb pain (PLP) is a frequent and often severely distressing complication following limb amputation. Despite a broad range of available therapeutic approaches, its treatment remains clinically challenging. Many interventions demonstrate only limited or short-term effectiveness, and evidence from high-quality clinical trials is scarce for several established methods. METHODS: This narrative review provides a clinically oriented overview of current pharmacological, physical, and psychological treatment strategies. RESULTS: Particular attention is given to prolonged peripher

From Pathway to Practice: Implementing Evidence-Based Quality Improvement for ELBW Care.

OBJECTIVE: Structured clinical guidelines improve outcomes in neonatal care. At Oklahoma Children's Hospital, the need for a standardized approach to extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants became urgent due to rising acuity and care variability. Despite existing nursing protocols, the unit lacked comprehensive interdisciplinary guidelines for ELBW infants. Key goals included reducing intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). STUDY DESIGN: Multidisciplinary teams developed eight clinical pathways using evidence-based models. T

Navigating Parenting in Pediatric Oncology: Merging Psychodynamic Theory and Evidence-Based Practice.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Parenting a child with a chronic illness such as cancer presents distinct psychological challenges that often disrupt normative parenting patterns. Parents frequently struggle to maintain boundaries in response to their child's heightened emotional needs, leading to overprotective or permissive behaviors. This study revisits Winnicott's theory of the "good enough parent" and explores its application in the context of pediatric oncology. We aim to examine how a psychodynamic framework can be integrated with evidence-based practices to support parental functioning and prom

Antibiotic Prophylaxis in Maxillofacial Surgery and Evidence-Based Practice: A Systematic Review.

Antibiotic prophylaxis is defined as the intentional administration of antibiotics with the goal of preventing infection prior to the occurrence of contamination by surgical incision. So, it can either be given before the procedure or after the surgery to prevent infection. The aim of this study was to review the current literature and evaluate whether the use of preoperative, perioperative, or postoperative antibiotic prophylaxis influences outcomes in patients undergoing oral and maxillofacial surgeries. This systematic review was conducted in line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Syst
