Brainstem auditory evoked potentials in newborn infants born in a high-altitude area.

Introduction. A non-invasive and safe way to assess neurophysiological parameters in newborn infants is the evaluation of brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs). Objective. To assess the latencies and wave intervals of BAEPs in healthy newborn infants born in a high-altitude area (Cusco, 3399 MASL). Population and methods. Cross-sectional and prospective study. Newborn infants younger than 14 days of age, discharged less than 7 days after birth, were assessed to determine BAEP values at intensities of 70 dB, 80 dB, and 90 dB. The study variables were gestational age, birth weight, and ty

Brainstem evoked auditory potentials in tinnitus: A best-evidence synthesis and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Accumulating evidence suggests a role of the brainstem in tinnitus generation and modulation. Several studies in chronic tinnitus patients have reported latency and amplitude changes of the different peaks of the auditory brainstem response, possibly reflecting neural changes or altered activity. The aim of the systematic review was to assess if alterations within the brainstem of chronic tinnitus patients are reflected in short- and middle-latency auditory evoked potentials (AEPs). METHODS: A systematic review was performed and reported according to the PRISMA guidelines. Studi

Neurophysiological findings of auditory evoked potentials in infants with a history of prematurity.

BACKGROUND: Auditory evoked potentials (AEPS) constitutes the most commonly used neurophysiological test to assess the functional development of the auditory brainstem in infants and allows the evaluation of hearing for high frequencies. METHODS: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional and retrospective study was conducted. The AEPS results for 186 infants (372 ears) with a history of prematurity were examined. The bioelectrical response, morphology, amplitude, latencies I, III and V, and intervals I-III, III-V and I-V were compared, as well as auditory thresholds between two groups of

Auditory fear conditioning modifies steady-state evoked potentials in the rat inferior colliculus.

The rat inferior colliculus (IC) is a major midbrain relay for ascending inputs from the auditory brain stem and has been suggested to play a key role in the processing of aversive sounds. Previous studies have demonstrated that auditory fear conditioning (AFC) potentiates transient responses to brief tones in the IC, but it remains unexplored whether AFC modifies responses to sustained periodic acoustic stimulation-a type of response called the steady-state evoked potential (SSEP). Here we used an amplitude-modulated tone-a 10-kHz tone with a sinusoidal amplitude modulation of 53.7 Hz-as the

Effect of Different References on Auditory-Evoked Potentials in Children with Cochlear Implants.

Background: Nose reference (NR), mastoid reference (MR), and montage average reference (MAR) are usually used in auditory event-related potential (AEP) studies with a recently developed reference electrode standardization technique (REST), which may reduce the reference effect. For children with cochlear implants (CIs), auditory deprivation may hinder normal development of the auditory cortex, and the reference effect may be different between CIs and a normal developing group. Methods: Thirteen right-side-CI children were recruited, comprising 7 males and 6 females, ages 2-5 years, with CI usa

Profiles in fibromyalgia: algometry, auditory evoked potentials and clinical characterization of different subtypes.

The heterogeneity found in fibromyalgia (FM) patients has led to the investigation of disease subgroups, mainly based on clinical features. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that clinical FM subgroups are associated with different underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. Sixty-three FM patients were classified in type I or type II, according to the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ), and in mild/moderate versus severe FM, according to the severity of three cardinal symptoms considered in the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) 2010 criteria (unrefreshed sleep, cognitive

Comparison of auditory evoked potentials in heterosexual, homosexual, and bisexual males and females.

The auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) elicited by click stimuli were measured in heterosexual, homosexual, and bisexual males and females having normal hearing sensitivity. Estimates of latency and/or amplitude were extracted for nine peaks having latencies of about 2-240 ms, which are presumed to correspond to populations of neurons located from the auditory nerve through auditory cortex. For five of the 19 measures obtained, the mean latency or amplitude for the 57 homosexual and bisexual females was different from that of the 49 heterosexual females in a manner that implies a masculinizatio

Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in acoustic tumor patients with normal auditory brainstem responses.

In order to clarify the utility of the vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) in detecting acoustic tumors, we report two patients who were found to have normal auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) and abnormal VEMPs. To record VEMPs, electromyographic responses to brief loud clicks (0.1 ms at 95 dBnHL) were amplified and averaged on the sternocleidomastoid muscle ipsilateral to the stimulated side. The stimulation rate was 5 Hz and the analysis time 50 ms. The first case was a 54-year-old woman in whom VEMPs were absent on the affected side while caloric tests and ABRs were normal. The se

Midlatency auditory-evoked potentials in the rat: effects of interventions that modulate arousal.

The vertex-recorded P13 midlatency auditory-evoked potential in the rat shows the same characteristics as the P1 potential in the human, namely, sleep-state dependence, rapid habituation and blockade by the cholinergic antagonist scopolamine. The P13 potential appears to be generated, at least in part, by projections of the pedunculopontine nucleus, the cholinergic arm of the reticular activating system. On the other hand, the auditory cortex-recorded P7 potential appears to be of primary cortical origin. Simultaneous recordings from the vertex and the auditory cortex showed that (1) the P13 p

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) pathology in topographical diagnosis of posterior fossa lesions.

The authors tried to determine the level of the brainstem where possible generators of various BAEPs waves could be situated by correlating clinical neurological symptomatology and/or cranial computed tomography findings of 195 patients with posterior fossa lesions with distinct BAEPs waves pathology. Results of statistical analysis showed a significant dependence between the levels of lesions as revealed by clinical symptomatology and/or cranial computed tomography and distinct BAEPs waves I-V pathology. Only indirect proof exists for the supratentorial origin of waves VI and VII. Because of

The effects of lead on otoacoustic emissions and auditory evoked potentials in monkeys.

Auditory functioning was assessed in two groups of adult rhesus monkeys (11 years of age). One (n = 11) received modest exposure to lead early in life and the other (n = 8) served as controls and did not receive any lead supplementation. Two lead-exposed monkeys had abnormal distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPEs) and smaller amplitude or absent evoked potentials. These monkeys had abnormal distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPEs) and smaller amplitude or absent evoked potentials. These monkeys had the highest blood levels recorded in their respective groups. For the remaining le

Brain stem auditory-evoked potentials in meningomyelocele. Natural history of Chiari II malformations.

Brain stem auditory-evoked potentials (BAEPs) were recorded in 30 patients with meningomyelocele and shunted hydrocephalus ranging in age from birth to 33 years. Twenty-two of them had Chiari II malformation, one of which was symptomatic. In 22 cases, including 15 with Chiari II malformation, BAEPs were recorded repeatedly after periods ranging from 18 months to 7 years. The results were as follows: (1) III-V interpeak latency (IPL) decreased progressively from prolonged to the normal range with growth until 25 years of age; (2) I-III IPL tended to prolong gradually from the normal range; (3)

The value of brainstem auditory evoked potentials in early diagnosis of Wernicke's encephalopathy.

Statistical analysis of the interpeak latencies of brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) shows that a delayed IPL I-V is a very sensitive indicator for an early diagnosis of Wernicke's encephalopathy. In cases of uncomplicated delirium tremens no significant deviations of BAEP were found.

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials in the alligator. Effects of temperature and hypoxia.

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were recorded from young alligators (Alligator mississippiensis), and the effects of hypothermia, hyperthermia and hypoxia on the wave forms were determined. The wave form shape was similar to the human BAEP, although extra waves were routinely seen. The responses were highly repeatable and varied in a predictable manner as a function of stimulus frequency, polarity, intensity, and body temperature. Rarefaction clicks produced longer wave form latencies than condensation clicks. BAEPs were present over the entire temperature range studied (0-36 deg

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials: intraoperative monitoring technique in surgery of posterior fossa tumors.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were used to monitor eight neurosurgical procedures involving posterior fossa tumors to assist the neurosurgeon in preservation of hearing postoperatively. The technique included placement of recording electrodes over the Cz (vertex) and both earlobes. Stimulation was accomplished intraoperatively with a specifically designed intraauricular click stimulator that did not interfere with surgical access to the suboccipital region. Continuous BAEP recording was performed with particular attention to the sequence of preincision, opening of the dura, tumo

Auditory brainstem evoked potentials in evaluating the central effects of middle ear effusion.

Auditory brainstem evoked potentials (ABEP) were recorded to determine whether children who suffered in the past, or suffered at time of examination from Secretory otitis media (S.O.M.), exhibited slowed conduction along their auditory brainstem. Five groups of subjects were examined: children with active S.O.M. during the examination, children with S.O.M. in the past who were treated non-surgically and recovered, children with S.O.M. in the past who were treated surgically and recovered, children who were treated by insertion of ventilating tubes (V.T.), and had S.O.M. during the examination

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials in fullterm and preterm newborns with hyperbilirubinemia and hypoxemia.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) were studied in 93 newborns (49 preterm and 44 fullterm) admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. One group of 42 infants (28-42 wk CA) were considered at low risk for perinatal complications and served to establish the normal ranges of the BAEP parameters (wave I peak latency and wave I-V interwave interval). Two groups of high risk infants were studied during or shortly following clinically significant hyperbilirubinemia (31 infants) or hypoxemia (20 infants). Though statistically significant BAEP abnormalities were found in the high risk infa

Late components of the auditory evoked potentials in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Late components (N1, P2, N2, P3) of the event-related potential (ERP) elicited by simple auditory discrimination tasks were investigated in 6 patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome. The ERP's were registrated in the patients before and during drug treatment as well as in 16 healthy controls. It appeared that in Tourette syndrome the N2 and P2 waveforms (target response) at Cz and Pz were remarkably less well identifiable. The results did not reveal P3 abnormalities in the patients. However, the patients demonstrated definite changes in the N1 and P2 components as compared to the controls
