The efficacy of Mulligan mobilization and corticosteroid injection on pain, functionality, and proprioception in rotator cuff tears: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of rotator cuff (RTC) tears commonly involves manual therapy, exercise, and injection methods. These treatments are typically administered together as components of a physical therapy intervention. However, it is not known which intervention is more effective. PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to examine the impact of mobilization with movement (MWM) mobilization, a technique from Mulligan approaches, and corticosteroid (CS) injection on pain, functionality, and proprioception in cases of RTC tears. STUDY DESIGN: This was a single-blinded randomized clinical tria

The Effect of Mobilization With Movement Techniques on Pain and Range of Elbow Extension in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, a Case Report.

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is one of the most prevalent chronic childhood inflammatory diseases. Patients with JIA often present with morning stiffness, swelling, pain, muscle weakness, and muscle atrophy around the affected joints and activity limitations. Fear of exercises results in functional limitations. High-dose corticosteroids provide good effects in the short term but have no long-term effect. Physical therapy focused on pain reduction and improvement of musculoskeletal function is an essential part of the management of JIA. Mobilization with movement (MWM) is considered a sy

Techniques for Multiple Room Connection in Virtual Reality: Walking Within Small Physical Spaces.

In Virtual Reality (VR), navigating small physical spaces often relies on handheld controllers, such as teleportation and joystick movements, due to the limited space for natural walking. However, walking-based techniques can enhance immersion by enabling more natural movement. This paper presents three room-connection techniques - portals, corridors, and central hubs - that can be used in virtual environments (VEs) to create "impossible spaces". These spaces use overlapping areas to maximize available physical space, promising for walking even in constrained spaces. We conducted a user study

Gross motor ability in Rett syndrome--the power of expectation, motivation and planning.

A main task for the physiotherapist at the Swedish Rett Center is to document and report successful treatment. This report shows the possibility to regain function, get variation and avoid contractures for several years. A thorough neurologic, orthopaedic and physiotherapeutic assessment and analysis is essential. We stress the importance of keeping the feet in good position, using surgery and well fitting orthoses when needed, making standing possible and for some persons, walking. For the effect of treatment the following factors were of vital importance: the expectations of the persons trea

Exertional hematuria: definition, epidemiology, diagnostic and clinical considerations.

Exertional hematuria can be considered a subcategory of exercise-induced hematuria, characterized by painless appearance of erythrocytes in urine after recent physical exercise, not directly attributable to external traumatic injuries to the genitourinary system, and spontaneously resolving with rest. Although its frequency has enormous heterogeneity, depending on the athlete population, duration and intensity of exercise, technique used for identifying or quantifying hematuria and relative diagnostic thresholds, what clearly emerges from the scientific literature is that a certain degree of h

A pilot study of biomechanical assessment before and after an integrative training program for adolescents with juvenile fibromyalgia.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with juvenile fibromyalgia (JFM) tend to be very sedentary and avoid participation in physical activity. A prior study suggested that JFM patients show altered biomechanics compared to healthy adolescents which may make them more prone to pain/injury during exercise. A new intervention combining well established cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques with specialized neuromuscular exercise -Fibromyalgia Integrative Training for Teens (FIT Teens) was developed and shown to be promising in improving functioning in adolescents with JFM. In contrast to traditional ex

Constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) for young children with cerebral palsy: effects of therapeutic dosage.

OBJECTIVE: To compare effects of 2 dosage levels of constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) for children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (CP). We hypothesized that high-dosage CIMT would produce larger benefits than moderate-dosage. METHODS: Three sites enrolled a total of 18 children (6 children per site from 3-6 years) with unilateral CP. Children were randomly assigned to CIMT for 21 days for either 6 hours/day (high-dosage=126 hours) or 3 hours/day (moderate-dosage=63 hours); both groups wore a long-arm cast. Evaluators (blind to dosage) assessed children 1-week prior, then 1-week and 1

The potential effect of Wuqinxi exercise for primary osteoporosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

This review aims to assess the effect of Wuqinxi exercise for primary osteoporosis. Literature search was conducted on the seven databases until June 2015. No statistical differences were found between the Wuqinxi versus no intervention, Wuqinxi plus antiosteoporosis medications versus antiosteoporosis medications on lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD). However, Wuqinxi significantly improved lumbar spine BMD compared with antiosteoporosis medications (MD= 0.02g/cm(2); 95% CI: 0.01-0.03; P<0.0001). Wuqinxi plus antiosteoporosis medications had a better effect on femora BMD (MD=0.24g/cm(2);

Pilates based core stability training in ambulant individuals with multiple sclerosis: protocol for a multi-centre randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: People with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) frequently experience balance and mobility impairments, including reduced trunk stability. Pilates-based core stability training, which is aimed at improving control of the body's stabilising muscles, is popular as a form of exercise with people with MS and therapists. A replicated single case series study facilitated by the Therapists in MS Group in the United Kingdom (UK) provides preliminary evidence that this approach can improve balance and mobility in ambulant people with MS; further evidence is needed to substantiate these findings to ensu

An assessment of the pressure distribution exerted by a rider on the back of a horse during hippotherapy.

Hippotherapy employs locomotion impulses that are emitted from the back of a horse while the horse is walking. These impulses stimulate the rider's postural reflex mechanisms, resulting in training of balance and coordination. The aim of the present study was to assess the changes in magnitude and distribution of the contact pressure between the rider and the horse during a series of hippotherapy lessons. The monitored group, consisting of four healthy women (mean age 22.75 years, mean body weight 59.75 kg, mean height 167.25 cm) without any previous horse riding experience, received five 20 m

Does artificial intelligence feedback result in different kinematic and muscle excitation patterns compared to physiotherapist feedback during lower-limb rehabilitation exercises?

BACKGROUND: Lower-limb rehabilitation exercises often require supervised feedback to ensure correct technique and muscle engagement. Artificial intelligence systems could provide an alternative to physiotherapy supervision, offering real-time feedback. This study aimed to compare effects of artificial intelligence-based feedback with physiotherapy feedback on kinematic and electromyographic outcomes during lower-limb exercises in healthy participants. METHODS: A repeated-measures design was employed, with uninjured participants performing four hip and knee exercises under physiotherapy and ar

Movement patterns in tuba playing: comparison of an embouchure dystonia case with healthy professional tuba players using real-time MRI imaging.

INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal problems in professional brass musicians are very common and often involve the muscles of the embouchure. In rare cases, embouchure dystonia (EmD), a task-specific movement disorder with a wide symptomatic and phenotypic variability, occurs. Following trumpeters and horn players, professional tuba players with and without EmD have now been studied using the latest real-time MRI technology to better understand the underlying pathophysiology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the present study, the tongue movement patterns of 11 healthy professional artists and one subject

Breathing retraining and exercise conditioning in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): a physiological approach.

In this review we shall consider the commonest techniques to reduce dyspnea that are being applied to patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) subjected to a pulmonary rehabilitation program (PRP). Pursed lip breathing (PLB) and diaphragmatic breathing (DB) are breathing retraining strategies employed by COPD patients in order to relieve and control dyspnea. However, the effectiveness of PLB in reducing dyspnoea is controversial. Moreover, DB may be associated with asynchronous and paradoxical breathing movements, reflecting a decrease in the efficiency ofthe diaphragm. Exerc

Neglected posterior dislocation of the elbow. A reconstruction operation.

A new technique for repair of neglected posterior dislocation of the elbow is described, consisting of open reduction with tendon graft stabilisation to create a medial collateral and an intra-articular "cruciate" ligament. This allows flexion-extension exercises to start six days after operation. Eleven cases are reported in which the average range of movement improved from 38 degrees before operation to 105 degrees after a minimum follow-up of two years, with a mean valgus-varus instability of only 13 degrees. One patient had a postoperative infection but all the others were satisfied with t

Dynamic Digital Radiography in Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: Visualizing Diaphragm Motility Impairment and Its Influence on Clinical Management.

A 40-year-old woman with a known diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) began experiencing progressive shortness of breath and reduced exercise tolerance following her second pregnancy. The patient underwent an unenhanced computed tomography (CT) scan that showed a marked elevation of the left diaphragm. Suspecting diaphragm dysfunction, the patient underwent Dynamic Digital Radiography (DDR) that confirmed a reduction in left diaphragm motility, indicative of impaired diaphragm function. Based on the DDR findings, which demonstrated reduced but preserved diaphragmatic motion without parado
