Individuals with paraplegia due to spinal cord injury rank restoration of walking high on the list of priorities to improving their quality of life. Powered lower-limb exoskeleton technology provides the ability to restore standing up, sitting down, and walking movements for individuals with paraplegia. The robotic exoskeletons generally have electrical motors located at the hip and knee joint centers, which move the wearers' lower limbs through the appropriate range of motion for gait according to control systems using either trajectory control or impedance control. Users of exoskeletons are

The optimal placement of the inflow cannula is critical for adequate ventricular unloading and device function in left ventricular assist device implantation. The anatomy of the left ventricle varies widely between patients yielding unpredictable surgical results depending on cannula position. We therefore aimed at devising a novel approach for optimal placement of the cannula in the clinical setting using computer-aided three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction and 3D printed guiding exoskeleton. This novel cannula positioning technique provides a personalized left ventricular assist device impla

Relative to motorized devices, passive hip exoskeletons with elastic actuation provide cheaper and lower-profile solutions to assist locomotion during walking. However, the influence of elastic hip assistance on stability during walking is poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effects on stability of a hip exoskeleton that provided elastic flexion torque during late stance. We quantified stability using both sagittal whole-body angular momentum (WBAM) range and whole-body mechanical work during walking with unexpected anteroposterior treadmill belt accelerations among 11 healthy uninjur

Crouch gait, characterized by excessive flexion of the lower-limb joints, is a common gait disorder among children with cerebral palsy (CP) that compromises mobility and increases energy expenditure. Although surgical and orthotic interventions can improve alignment, maintaining these benefits requires continued postural support and gait practice. While powered exoskeletons have been developed to support upright and coordinated movement, they are often too heavy and complex for practical use. To address this, we developed a lightweight passive exoskeleton that assists the hip, knee, and ankle

Aging comes with physiological changes resulting in alterations to gait, decline of muscle function, and balance that contribute to reduced mobility, increased metabolic cost of walking, and elevated fall and injury risks in older adults. Wearable lower-limb exoskeletons have emerged as a promising strategy to support healthy aging; however, identifying optimal assistance strategies remains challenging due to the complexity and cost of experimental testing. In this study, we combined musculoskeletal modelling and simulations to identify key assistance parameters for older-adult gait and evalua

With rapid advancements in lower-limb exoskeleton hardware, two key challenges persist: the accurate assessment of user biomechanics and the reliable control of device behavior in real-world settings. This study presents a modular, sensor-based system designed to enhance both biomechanical evaluation and control of lower-limb exoskeletons, leveraging advanced sensor technologies and fuzzy logic. The system addresses the limitations of traditional lab-bound, high-cost methods by integrating inertial measurement units, force-sensitive resistors, and load cells into instrumented crutches and 3D-p

RESEARCH QUESTION: Upper-limb exoskeletons are known to reduce local muscle strain, but their impact on global postural regulation remains unclear. This study investigated whether upper-limb exoskeleton usage induces a compensatory trade-off in postural stability or a fundamental reorganisation of motor control strategies during sustained static loading.
METHODS: Nineteen healthy participants performed a static holding task (10 kg) to exhaustion under two conditions: with and without a passive upper-limb exoskeleton. Neuromuscular fatigue was assessed via surface electromyography (sEMG) spect

Robot-assisted gait training (RAGT) devices are used in rehabilitation to improve patients' walking function. While there are some reports on the adverse events (AEs) and associated risks in overground exoskeletons, the risks of stationary gait trainers cannot be accurately assessed. We therefore aimed to collect information on AEs occurring during the use of stationary gait robots and identify associated risks, as well as gaps and needs, for safe use of these devices. We searched both bibliographic and full-text literature databases for peer-reviewed articles describing the outcomes of statio

BACKGROUND: The aging of the population and the progressive increase of life expectancy in developed countries is leading to a high incidence of age-related cerebrovascular diseases, which affect people's motor and cognitive capabilities and might result in the loss of arm and hand functions. Such conditions have a detrimental impact on people's quality of life. Assistive robots have been developed to help people with motor or cognitive disabilities to perform activities of daily living (ADLs) independently. Most of the robotic systems for assisting on ADLs proposed in the state of the art are

The application of online reinforcement learning (RL) in lower limb exoskeleton control has the potential to improve gait rehabilitation for individuals with impaired mobility. However, online RL approaches require real-time exploration and pose safety risks during training as suboptimal policies can lead to unstable or unsafe actions being executed by the exoskeleton. This study explores the application of offline RL methods, including Implicit Q-Learning (IQL), Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient with Behavior Cloning (TD3+BC), and Revisited Behavior Regularized Actor-Critic (ReB

Upper-limb rehabilitation exoskeletons offer a valuable solution to support and enhance the rehabilitation path of neural-injured patients. Such devices are usually equipped with a network of sensors that can be exploited to evaluate and monitor the performances of the users. In this work, we assess the normality ranges of different motor-performance indicators on a group of 15 healthy participants, computed with the benchmark toolbox of AGREE, an upper limb motorized exoskeleton. The toolbox implements a benchmarking scheme for the evaluation of the upper limb, used to test anterior reaching

This work presents an intention decoding algorithm that can be used to control a 4 degrees-of-freedom shoulder-elbow exoskeleton in reaching tasks. The algorithm was designed to assist the movement of users with upper-limb impairments who can initiate the movement by themselves. It relies on the observation of the initial part of the user's movement through joint angle measures and aims to estimate in real-time the phase of the movement and predict the goal position of the hand in the reaching task. The algorithm is based on adaptive Dynamic Movement Primitives and Gaussian Mixture Models. The

To exploit the benefits of treadmill-based exoskeletons, it is crucial to assess possible deviations from natural walking depending on assistive parameters. This study evaluated the biomechanics of exoskeleton-assisted treadmill walking by comparing it with free gait. Five healthy participants walked freely on a treadmill and with the assistance of the Lokomat gait trainer, while changing Body Weight Support (BWS), Gait Speed (GS), and Guidance Force (GF). Results showed that the hip and knee joint kinematics depended on BWS and GS, while changes due to GF were limited. Moreover, joint kinemat

In recent years, lower limb exoskeletons (LLEs) have received much attention due to the potential to help people with paraplegia regain the ability of upright-legged locomotion. However, one major hindrance to converting prototypes into actual products is the lack of a balance recovery function. Locomotion intentions can be the first step for balance assistance. Therefore, its significance continues to grow. Many researchers focus on this topic, but there is a lack of a general discussion on the research phenomenon. Therefore, the purpose of this work is to systematize these data and benefit f

Existing exoskeletons for pediatric gait assistance have limitations in anthropometric design, structure weight, cost, user safety features, and adaptability to diverse users. Additionally, creating precise models for pediatric rehabilitation is difficult because the rapid anthropometric changes in children result in unknown model parameters. Furthermore, external disruptions, like unpredictable movements and involuntary muscle contractions, add complexity to the control schemes that need to be managed. To overcome these limitations, this study aims to develop an affordable stand-aided lower-l

This study proposes a bioinspired exotendon routing configuration for a tendon-based mechanism to provide finger flexion and extension that utilizes a single motor to reduce the complexity of the system. The configuration was primarily inspired by the extrinsic muscle-tendon units of the human musculoskeletal system. The function of the intrinsic muscle-tendon units was partially compensated by adding a minor modification to the configuration of the extrinsic units. The finger kinematics produced by this solution during flexion and extension were experimentally evaluated on an artificial finge

The development of increasingly more complex computer and electromotor technologies enables the increasing use and expansion of robot-assisted systems in trauma surgery rehabilitation; however, the currently available devices are rarely comprehensively applied but are often used within pilot projects and studies. Different technological approaches, such as exoskeletal systems, functional electrical stimulation, soft robotics, neurorobotics and brain-machine interfaces are used and combined to read and process the communication between, e.g., residual musculature or brain waves, to transfer the
