Spinal cord compression caused by osteocartilaginous exostoses of the spine in two dogs.

Two dogs, one 4 months old and the other 1 year old, had histories of progressive posterior weakness. In both cases, there was severe asymmetric proprioceptive loss but appreciable preservation of strength. Benign, cystic expansile lesions involving the facets and lamina of the thoracic spine were observed radiographically; a single lesioons was demonstrated in the other. Examination of biopsy speciments taken at the time of laminectomy revealed the lesions to be osteocartilaginous exostoses (osteochondromas, ecchondromas, exostoses). The progress of dogs 1 and 2 has been monitored for 1 1/2 y

Hereditary Multiple Exostoses: New Insights into Pathogenesis, Clinical Complications, and Potential Treatments.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hereditary multiple exostoses (HME) is a complex musculoskeletal pediatric disorder characterized by osteochondromas that form next to the growth plates of many skeletal elements, including long bones, ribs, and vertebrae. Due to its intricacies and unresolved issues, HME continues to pose major challenges to both clinicians and biomedical researchers. The purpose of this review is to describe and analyze recent advances in this field and point to possible targets and strategies for future biologically based therapeutic intervention. RECENT FINDINGS: Most HME cases are link

Tricho-rhino-phalangeal syndrome without exostoses, wih an interstitial deletion of 8q23.

We report on a patient with the Tricho-Rhino-Phalangeal syndrome (TRPS) with normal mentation, without exostoses and with a partial microdeletion of 8q23. Although she had the phenotypic characteristics of TRPS Type I, karyotypic analysis demonstrated the 8q-microdeletion usually associated with TRPS Type II, in which exostoses are present. Our patient represents the second reported instance of this phenotypic chromosomal association and provides further evidence for homogeneity of the TRPS.

Total hip arthroplasty in hereditary multiple exostoses with secondary osteoarthritis: A case report.

RATIONALE: Hereditary multiple exostoses (HME) is an autosomal dominant disease that causes multiple exostoses throughout the body. It usually occurs around the metaphysis of the long bones, and when it involves the hip, symptoms arise due to deformity and the mass effect. If the lesion does not involve the joint or is not associated with arthritis, symptoms can be relieved by surgical excision of the osteochondroma. However, if secondary osteoarthritis (OA) or subluxation of the joint has progressed, joint replacement arthroplasty should be considered. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 57-year-old woman w

A genotype-phenotype study of hereditary multiple exostoses in forty-six Chinese patients.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary multiple exostoses (HME) is a rare autosomal dominant skeletal disorder that can cause a variety of clinical manifestations. We aimed to evaluate the general clinical phenotypic severity of HME by using a scoring system and correlate the genotypes with different clinical phenotypes in Chinese patients. METHODS: Forty-six patients from different families were prospectively enrolled. The mutations were identified by direct sequencing of PCR-amplified genomic DNA or by multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA). Patients' demographic data, height, age of onset

Another case of multiple juxtasutural hyperostoses, cervical exostoses, and fatty infiltration of myocardium.

We report on an individual affected by multiple juxtasutural cranial hyperostoses who later developed cervical spine hyperostoses with associated fusion anomalies. The propositus was not affected by a disorder of generalized overgrowth. An echocardiogram revealed areas of abnormal signal within the myocardium which were consistent with fatty infiltration on magnetic resonance imaging of the heart. We compare our case with a few previously reported cases that share phenotypic similarities but differ in some other clinical aspects. It is possible that these patients represent a phenotypic contin

Clinical otosclerosis and auditory exostoses in ancient Europeans (investigation of Lithuanian paleoosteological samples).

The purpose of this investigation was to establish the incidence of clinical otosclerosis and auditory exostoses in Lithuanian paleopopulations. The total sample consists of 4080 skulls, dating from the Neolithic to the C17th-C18th A.D., investigated visually, under magnification and radiologically. Eight cases of clinical otosclerosis and 22 of auditory exostoses were identified. The general epidemiology of otosclerosis (0.19 +/- 0.08 per cent) was established to be similar to contemporary populations. This suggests that there are no new aetiological factors attributable to our modern society

Occurrence of osteochondromatosis (multiple cartilaginous exostoses) in a domestic pig (Sus scrofa domesticus).

Osteochondromatosis is a condition in which multiple benign, cartilage-capped tumors arise from the surface of bones formed by endochondral ossification. The current report describes the presence of 4 prominent exophytic masses, measuring between 4 and 13 cm in diameter, arising from the surface of the ribs, and located within the thoracic cavity, in a 2-year-old female domestic pig (Sus scrofa domesticus). Histological studies revealed that masses were well-differentiated, cartilage-capped proliferations with an orderly pattern of endochondral mineralization toward deeper areas. The observed

Multiple hereditary exostoses as a rare nonatherosclerotic etiology of chronic lower extremity ischemia.

Nonatherosclerotic etiologies of arterial insufficiency are uncommon but important causes of chronic lower extremity ischemia. We report a patient with multiple hereditary exostoses (MHE) presenting with lifestyle-limiting lower extremity claudication and popliteal artery occlusion secondary to a large osteochondroma. The presence of MHE with associated osteochondroma resulting in arterial occlusion is a rare condition. Management strategies for treating large osteochondromas adjacent to or with vessel involvement in asymptomatic patients remain undefined.

Novel EXT1 and EXT2 mutations in hereditary multiple exostoses families of Indian origin.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary multiple exostosis (HME) is an autosomal dominant bone disorder, characterized by short stature and the presence of multiple benign tumors mainly at the ends of long bones. HME is genetically heterogeneous with two known genes on 8q24 (EXT1) and 11p11 (EXT2), and a third minor locus mapped to 19p (EXT3). The majority of EXT1 and EXT2 mutations result in premature protein truncation and loss of function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed two autosomal dominant HME families of Indian origin. Linkage analysis using fluorescently labeled microsatellite markers at the candi

Correction of ankle valgus deformity secondary to multiple hereditary osteochondral exostoses with Ilizarov.

The following case report highlights basic aspects of Multiple Hereditary Osteochondral Exostoses (MHOCE) and discusses the successful treatment of an adult with ankle pain secondary to growth arrest and foreshortening of the fibula. Two salient features include the age of the patient at presentation and the success of the procedure. Symptomatic valgus deformities of the ankle secondary to MHOCE are normally corrected during adolescence, prior to physeal closure. Reducing the ankle mortise by distally displacing the fibula and correcting rotational and angular ankle deformities with Ilizarov e

Longitudinal Observation of Changes in the Ankle Alignment and Tibiofibular Relationships in Hereditary Multiple Exostoses.

The longitudinal changes in the tibiofibular relationship as the ankle valgus deformity progresses in patients with hereditary multiple exostoses (HME) are not well-known. We investigated the longitudinal changes and associating factors in the tibiofibular relationship during the growing period. A total of 33 patients (63 legs) with HME underwent two or more standing full-length anteroposterior radiographs. Based on the change in ankle alignments, thirty-five patients with an increase in tibiotalar angle were grouped into group V, and 28 patients with a decreased angle into group N. In terms o

Hereditary multiple exostoses as a novel cause of bilateral popliteal artery aneurysms in the elderly.

Hereditary multiple exostoses (HME) is a genetic condition characterized by the development of multiple osteochondromas during childhood and adolescence. On rare occasions, these bony tumors can be associated with vascular injury, most commonly involving the popliteal artery. Such patients typically present with vascular complications in adolescence and young adulthood. We report an autopsy study of an elderly man who presented with bilateral popliteal artery pseudoaneurysms in the setting of HME at age 81. This is the oldest patient presenting with a vascular complication due to HME reported

PURPOSE: To report on the outcomes of using ulnar lengthening combined with acute angular correction for the treatment of forearm deformities in patients affected by multiple hereditary exostoses (MHE). Our hypothesis was that this procedure would improve both radiographic measurements and clinical outcomes with minimal complications. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed on patients who had a diagnosis of MHE and had undergone ulnar lengthening via a uniplanar external fixator over a 12-year period. Clinical outcomes such as range of motion, pain, and surgical complications wer
