Porous-Medium Effect of Soft Protein Corona on the Photothermal Performance of Gold Nanoparticles in an Absorptive Blood Environment.

The dynamically formed protein corona (PC) on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) critically reshapes their photothermal performance in physiological environments. However, current theoretical models overwhelmingly simplify the entire PC as a homogeneous dielectric shell, neglecting the structurally distinct hard protein corona (HPC) and soft protein corona (SPC), particularly the intrinsically porous and loosely packed architecture of the SPC. Here, we introduce a porous-medium framework that integrates a fuzzy-shell model with the Maxwell-Garnett effective medium theory to quantitatively describe the

Birefringence-induced phase delay enables Brillouin mechanical imaging in turbid media.

Acoustic vibrations of matter convey fundamental viscoelastic information that can be optically retrieved by hyperfine spectral analysis of the inelastic Brillouin scattered light. Increasing evidence of the central role of the viscoelastic properties in biological processes has stimulated the rise of non-contact Brillouin microscopy, yet this method faces challenges in turbid samples due to overwhelming elastic background light. Here, we introduce a common-path Birefringence-Induced Phase Delay (BIPD) filter to disentangle the polarization states of the Brillouin and Rayleigh signals, enablin

Inner ear sensory system changes as extinct crocodylomorphs transitioned from land to water.

Major evolutionary transitions, in which animals develop new body plans and adapt to dramatically new habitats and lifestyles, have punctuated the history of life. The origin of cetaceans from land-living mammals is among the most famous of these events. Much earlier, during the Mesozoic Era, many reptile groups also moved from land to water, but these transitions are more poorly understood. We use computed tomography to study changes in the inner ear vestibular system, involved in sensing balance and equilibrium, as one of these groups, extinct crocodile relatives called thalattosuchians, tra

Ontogenetic and life history trait changes associated with convergent ecological specializations in extinct ungulate mammals.

Investigating life history traits in mammals is crucial to understand their survival in changing environments. However, these parameters are hard to estimate in a macroevolutionary context. Here we show that the use of dental ontogenetic parameters can provide clues to better understand the adaptive nature of phenotypic traits in extinct species such as South American notoungulates. This recently extinct order of mammals evolved in a context of important geological, climatic, and environmental variations. Interestingly, notoungulates were mostly herbivorous and acquired high-crowned teeth very

Life history traits of Sirex noctilio F. (Hymenoptera: Siricidae) can explain outbreaks independently of environmental factors.

The woodwasp Sirex noctilio is a major pest of pine plantations worldwide. Economically significant damage is however limited to outbreak populations. To understand what determines outbreaks dynamics in this species, we developed an individual based model for a wasp population developing within a pine plantation. We show that outbreaks may be the result of the insect's life history. Specifically we show that limited dispersal may not only increase population persistence but also create the conditions for eruptive dynamics. When the probability of long distance dispersal is greater than zero, b

Smallpox: the disease and strategies for its control.

Smallpox was once one of the most severe infectious diseases and was endemic throughout the world for most of recorded history. It no longer exists in nature, having been declared extinct in 1980 following a global eradication campaign led by the World Health Organization. However, recent news reports on the vaccination of key health workers in the event of deliberate release of smallpox as part of a biological attack, and the deployment of Regional Smallpox Diagnosis and Response Teams, are stimulating demand for knowledge of the disease. This article provides an overview of the smallpox viru

The Somatic Engram and Reversal of Allostatic Load via Reconsolidation: A Technical Description of the RB7™ Protocol.

Developmental neurobiology indicates that baseline calibration of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis occurs predominantly during critical periods of plasticity (zero to five years). Early trauma may generate lifelong Allostatic Load, manifesting as a probable physiological substrate of psychosomatic disorders, treatment-resistant anxiety, and systemic dysfunctions, including chronic pain and metabolic sensitivities. Conventional therapies often operate via extinction mechanisms, which may suppress rather than modify the original fear trace. This article describes the RB7™ Protocol (

Post-mortem semen cryopreservation and characterization in two different endangered gazelle species (Gazella gazella and Gazella dorcas) and one subspecies (Gazella gazelle acaiae).

Both Gazella gazella and Gazella dorcas are endangered species with continually dwindling population size, yet basic knowledge on their spermatozoa is missing. Semen collected post-mortem (PM) from the cauda epididymis of five adult gazelles (three Gazella gazella gazella, one Gazella gazella acaiae and one G. dorcas) was cryopreserved using directional freezing of large volumes (8 mL) with egg-yolk-free extender. Sperm size measurements and SYBR-14/propodium iodide (PI) viability stain validation for use in gazelles were conducted. Post-thaw characterization included motility, viability, acro

A global map of species at risk of extinction due to natural hazards.

An often-overlooked question of the biodiversity crisis is how natural hazards contribute to species extinction risk. To address this issue, we explored how four natural hazards, earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, and volcanoes, overlapped with the distribution ranges of amphibians, birds, mammals, and reptiles that have either narrow distributions or populations with few mature individuals. To assess which species are at risk from these natural hazards, we combined the frequency and magnitude of each natural hazard to estimate their impact. We considered species at risk if they overlapped wit

Anthropogenic impacts on threatened species erode functional diversity in chelonians and crocodilians.

The Anthropocene is tightly associated with a drastic loss of species worldwide and the disappearance of their key ecosystem functions. The orders Testudines (turtles and tortoises) and Crocodilia (crocodiles, alligators, and gharials) contain numerous threatened, long-lived species for which the functional diversity and potential erosion by anthropogenic impacts remains unknown. Here, we examine 259 (69%) of the existing 375 species of Testudines and Crocodilia, quantifying their life history strategies (i.e., trade-offs in survival, development, and reproduction) from open-access data on dem

Influenza lineage extinction during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has seen a notable global reduction in influenza cases of both influenza A and B viruses. In particular, the B/Yamagata lineage has not been isolated from April 2020 to August 2021, suggesting that this influenza lineage may have become extinct, which may provide opportunities for improving availability and effectiveness of influenza vaccines.

[Relationship between natural extinction of Oncomelania hupensis snails and water chemical properties in Eastern Dongting Lake areas].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the reasons of natural extinction of Oncomelania hupensis snails by comparing the difference of the water chemical properties between the snail-breeding marshland and non-snail marshland in Eastern Dongting Lake areas. METHODS: Three adjoining marshlands in Eastern Dongting Lake areas were selected, one was a snail-breeding marshland, the second was a non-snail marshland, and the third was a boundary zone between them. During the periods of water-rising season, wet season and water-falling season, the water samples from the bottom of 0.5 m were collected by the syste

Diversification in vipers: Phylogenetic relationships, time of divergence and shifts in speciation rates.

Snakes of the cosmopolitan family Viperidae comprise around 329 venomous species showing a striking heterogeneity in species richness among lineages. While the subfamily Azemiopinae comprises only two species, 70% of all viper species are arranged in the subfamily Crotalinae or the "pit vipers". The radiation of the pit vipers was marked by the evolution of the heat-sensing pits, which has been suggested to be a key innovation for the successful diversification of the group. Additionally, only crotalines were able to successfully colonize the New World. Here, we present the most complete molec

Breathing life into dinosaurs: tackling challenges of soft-tissue restoration and nasal airflow in extinct species.

The nasal region plays a key role in sensory, thermal, and respiratory physiology, but exploring its evolution is hampered by a lack of preservation of soft-tissue structures in extinct vertebrates. As a test case, we investigated members of the "bony-headed" ornithischian dinosaur clade Pachycephalosauridae (particularly Stegoceras validum) because of their small body size (which mitigated allometric concerns) and their tendency to preserve nasal soft tissues within their hypermineralized skulls. Hypermineralization directly preserved portions of the olfactory turbinates along with an interna

An intermediate crocodylian linking two extant gharials from the Bronze Age of China and its human-induced extinction.

A solid phylogenetic framework is the basis of biological studies, yet higher level relationships are still unresolved in some major vertebrate lineages. One such group is Crocodylia, where the branching pattern of three major families (Alligatoridae, Crocodylidae and Gavialidae) has been disputed over decades due to the uncertain relationship of two slender-snouted lineages, gavialines and tomistomines. Here, we report a bizarre crocodylian from the Bronze Age of China, which shows a mosaic of gavialine and tomistomine features across the skeleton, rendering support to their sister taxon rela

Improving island occupancy predictions using ecologically informed metrics of area and isolation.

Understanding how species occupy islands and habitat patches remains a central question in biogeography, landscape ecology, conservation, and management, especially as natural and anthropogenic processes reconfigure habitat size and connectivity over time. The insular distribution function (IDF) provides a framework for predicting occupancy patterns for a species based on island area and isolation as proxies for extinction risk and colonization likelihood. While this model provides a conceptual bridge between island biogeography and metapopulation models, it has seen limited recent application

Targeting macrophages in classical Hodgkin's lymphoma may seem rational, but is it safe?

A few reports have linked increased numbers of tissue macrophages with treatment failure and reduced lifespan in classical Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) patients. Some investigators even suggested to target the macrophages in HL with biologic therapy, thus eliminating them from the tumor microenvironment. This review explores the risk: benefit equation of such approach as well as what the author believes is the driving force behind the 'great' migration of macrophages in HL. This article unravels the inflammatory pathways and immune alterations in classical HL that lead to a complex network consisti

A comparative study of the mechanical properties of a dinosaur and crocodile fossil teeth.

Vertebrate teeth are complex structures adapted in terms of shape and structure to serve a variety of functions like biting and grinding. Thus, examining the morphology, composition and mechanical properties of the teeth can aid in providing insights into the feeding behaviour of extinct species. We here provide the first mechanical characterisation of teeth in a spinosaurid dinosaur, Suchomimus tenerensis, and a pholidosaurid crocodylomorph, Sarcosuchus imperator. Our results show that both species have similar macrostructure of enamel, dental and interfacial layers, and similar composition,

Partial recovery of visual extinction by pavlovian conditioning in a patient with hemispatial neglect.

Patients with parietal lesions and unilateral spatial neglect (USN) are unable to detect or respond to information in the contralesional side of space. However, some residual sensory processing may still occur and overcome inattention symptoms when contralesional stimuli are perceptually or biologically salient, as shown for emotional faces or voices. These effects have been attributed to enhanced neural responses of sensory regions to emotional stimuli, presumably driven by feedback signals from limbic regions such as the amygdala. However, because emotional faces and voices also differ from

A systematic approach to identify gaps in neuroimmunology: TNF-α and fear learning deficits, a worked example.

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of several neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders is linked to an altered immune system. However, it is often unclear how the immune system specifically affects these disorders since neuroimmune interactions are very complex. In this paper, we introduce an adjusted version of the adverse outcome pathway (AOP) approach from toxicology to the field of neuroimmunology. A review of the effect of TNF-α on fear learning deficits is used as a worked example to demonstrate how an AOP approach can help identify gaps of knowledge and crucial steps in the pathoph
