BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patellar tendinopathy is a common overuse injury for which no evidence-based treatment guidelines exist. Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) seems to be an effective treatment for patellar tendinopathy but the most beneficial treatment strategies still need to be ascertained. Aim of this pilot study was to investigate if patient guided Piezo-electric, focused ESWT, without local anesthesia is a safe and well tolerated treatment which improves pain and function in patients with patellar tendinopathy.
METHODS: Nineteen male athletes with severe chronic patellar tend

INTRODUCTION: Acute and chronic epididymitis frequently present with significant morbidity due to severe pain and inflammation. Standard management includes antibiotics and analgesics, yet persistent symptoms and complications often occur, sometimes leading to orchiectomy. Low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy (LiESWT), previously shown to modulate inflammation and promote tissue repair in other urological conditions, was explored as an adjunct treatment for epididymitis. Case Presentation(s): Eleven men with ultrasound-confirmed acute or chronic epididymitis were treated with adjunct

PURPOSE: Focused extracorporeal shock wave therapy (fESWT) has been shown to be effective in a large number of musculoskeletal disorders. Until 2016, cancer was considered a contraindication for fESWT. The goal of this Commentary is to address the subject of fESWT in cancer patients and present a case of a successful application of fESWT in a breast cancer patient with metastatic bone disease, suffering from debilitating heel pain caused by plantar fasciitis.
METHODS: The subject of fESWT application in cancer patients is discussed using the example of a 75-year-old female with breast cancer

BackgroundPrevious outcome studies for extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) have included clinically diagnosed greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS). The purpose of this study is to investigate outcome of ESWT on GTPS with gluteal tendinopathy documented by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).MethodsMedical records of 38 consecutive patients were retrospectively reviewed, who underwent ESWT for GTPS with MRI-documented gluteal tendinopathy (> 6 months). ESWT was conducted (1/week) when the Roles-Maudsley score (RMS) showed "Poor" or "Fair" grade after conservative treatment until RMS had

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to assess the methodological quality of meta-analyses (MAs) and resolve evidence inconsistencies by quantifying overlap in primary studies, thereby providing enhanced evidence on the efficacy of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) versus placebo, ultrasound therapy, and corticosteroid injections for lateral epicondylitis.
METHODS: We conducted searches in four databases: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science, until August 2024. This review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guide

BACKGROUND: In recent years, numerous meta-analyses have been published on the effectiveness of ESWT in treating various tendinopathies. However, due to limitations such as the small number of included studies, it remains unclear whether ESWT is definitively effective for all types of tendinopathies and what its comparative value is relative to other conservative treatments. The objective of this meta-analysis is to compare ESWT with other conservative treatments to determine its effectiveness in alleviating pain and improving the severity of tendinopathies. Additionally, through network meta-

We report a case of a 14-year-old male sprinter with bilateral fatigue fractures of the proximal phalanges in the great toes. The patient and his guardian wished for an early return to sports; therefore, focused extracorporeal shockwave therapy (FSW) was administered instead of the traditional surgical treatment for bilateral cases. Four weeks after starting treatment, tenderness had disappeared, and he was able to return to sports. Computed tomography at 24 weeks after starting FSW revealed bone healing, and there was no recurrence of the fatigue fractures at the 48-week follow-up. The lesson

Stroke is a severe injury of the central nervous system (CNS) and one of the leading causes of long-term disability and mortality. One of the main symptoms of neurological diseases is spasticity. This is defined as a motor condition characterized by a velocity-dependent increase in tonic stretch reflexes with exaggerated tendon jerks and resulting in the hyperexcitability of the stretch reflex. Rehabilitation after a stroke is focused on relearning lost skills and regaining independence. Many new methods in neurorehabilitation have been introduced. This review concentrates on the current evide

BACKGROUND: Tendinopathy is caused by repetitive motion, excessive stress on the tendon, overstretch, and motion past the critical angle of rotation or translation. There are various treatment options available for tendinitis, including those affecting both the upper and lower limbs and those of calcific and non-calcific types.
HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: Few reviews have analyzed the efficacy of Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) in treating upper and lower limb tendinopathies while considering calcific and non-calcific-type tendinitis. This paper provides a review and meta-analysis on Randomiz

A 59-yr-old male marathon runner presented with recent diagnosis of hereditary spastic paraplegia in the setting of gait deviation and spasticity. He noted asymmetric wear pattern of his right shoe and toe drag, with recent development of left lower limb pain and cramping attributed to spasticity. He elected to proceed with radial extracorporeal shockwave treatment targeting the affected muscles. The night following initial treatment, he was able to run 2 mins per mile faster over a 4-mile run with resolution of toe drag. He completed six sessions of radial extracorporeal shockwave treatment a

The aim of the study was to examine the immediate effect of 1 session of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) on patellar tendon stiffness and to explore the relationship between the change in tendon stiffness and the pain intensity. Thirty-four male athletes aged 22.2 ± 3.8 with patellar tendinopathy were recruited. The participants were randomized into ESWT and sham groups. The ESWT group received 1500 impulses of ESWT at 4 Hz with maximal tolerable pain intensity and the sham group received intensities below 0.08 mJ/mm2. Supersonic Shearwave Imaging (SSI) was used to measure tendon shear
