Hydrogen cyanide polymerization: a preferred cosmochemical pathway.

Current research in cosmochemistry shows that crude organic solids of high molecular weight are readily formed in planetary, interplanetary and interstellar environments. Underlying much of this ubiquitous chemistry is a low energy route leading directly to the synthesis of hydrogen cyanide and its polymers. Evidence from laboratory and extraterrestrial investigations suggests that these polymers plus water yield heteropolypeptides, a truly universal process that accounts not only for the past synthesis of protein ancestors on Earth but also for reactions proceeding elsewhere today within our

Biomarker Preservation in Antarctic Sandstones after Prolonged Space Exposure Outside the International Space Station During the ESA EXPOSE-E Lichens and Fungi Experiment.

A primary aim of current and future space exploration missions is the detection and identification of chemical and biological indicators of life, namely biomarkers, on Mars. The Mars Sample Return NASA-ESA program will bring to Earth samples of martian soil, acquired from up to 7 cm depth. The ESA Rosalind Franklin rover will search for signs of life in the subsurface (down to a depth of 2 meters), given the highly radioactive conditions on Mars' surface, which are not ideal for life as we know it and for the preservation of its traces. In the frame of the Lichens and Fungi Experiment, small f

Optimizing photosynthetic light-harvesting under stars: simple and general antenna models.

In the next 10-20 years, several observatories will aim to detect the signatures of oxygenic photosynthesis on exoplanets, though targets must be carefully selected. Most known potentially habitable exo-planets orbit cool M-dwarf stars, which have limited emission in the photosynthetically active region of the spectrum (PAR, 400 < λ < 700 nm) used by Earth's oxygenic photoautotrophs. Still, recent experiments have shown that model cyanobacteria, algae, and non-vascular plants grow comfortably under simulated M-dwarf light, though vascular plants struggle. Here, we hypothesize that this is par

A summary on cutting edge advancements in sterilization and cleaning technologies in medical, food, and drug industries, and its applicability to spacecraft hardware.

Issued primarily by COSPAR (the Committee On SPAce Research), international Planetary Protection Policies mandate that all spacecraft hardware in contact with extraterrestrial environments "of chemical evolution and/or origin of life interest and for which scientific opinion provides a significant chance of contamination which could compromise future investigations" (Kminek and Rummel, 2015) undergo biological burden control processes. These policies seek to limit the (forward) biological contamination of the target body by terrestrial microorganisms on the spacecraft, so that future missions

Impact of space environment on stability of medicines: Challenges and prospects.

To upkeep health of astronauts in a unique, isolated, and extreme environment of space is the primary goal for a successful space mission, hence, safe and efficacious medications are essential for the wellness of astronauts. Space medication has been challenged with problems related to efficacy. Along with altered physiology, one of the possible reasons could be instability of space medications in the presence of harsh spaceflight environmental conditions. Altered physical and chemical stability can result in reduced potency which can result in reduced efficacy. Right now, medicines from the I

Jupiter's atmospheric composition from the Cassini thermal infrared spectroscopy experiment.

The Composite Infrared Spectrometer observed Jupiter in the thermal infrared during the swing-by of the Cassini spacecraft. Results include the detection of two new stratospheric species, the methyl radical and diacetylene, gaseous species present in the north and south auroral infrared hot spots; determination of the variations with latitude of acetylene and ethane, the latter a tracer of atmospheric motion; observations of unexpected spatial distributions of carbon dioxide and hydrogen cyanide, both considered to be products of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 impacts; characterization of the morpholo

Seasonal variation of Titan's atmospheric structure simulated by a general circulation model.

The seasonal variation of Titan's atmospheric structure with emphasis on the stratosphere is simulated by a three-dimensional general circulation model. The model includes the transport of haze particles by the circulation. The likely pattern of meridional circulation is reconstructed by a comparison of simulated and observed haze and temperature distribution. The GCM produces a weak zonal circulation with a small latitudinal temperature gradient, in conflict with observation. The direct reason is found to be the excessive meridional circulation. Under uniformly distributed opacity sources, th

The condensation and vaporization behavior of ices containing SO2, H2S, and CO2: implications for Io.

In an extension of previously reported work on ices containing CO, CO2, H2O, CH3OH, NH3, and H2, measurements of the physical and infrared spectral properties of ices containing molecules relevant to Jupiter's moon Io are presented. These include studies on ice systems containing SO2, H2S, and CO2. The condensation and sublimation behaviors of each ice system and surface binding energies of their components are discussed. The surface binding energies can be used to calculate the residence times of the molecules on a surface as a function of temperature and thus represent important parameters f

Infrared spectroscopy of dense clouds in the C-H stretch region: methanol and "diamonds.".

High spectral resolution (nu/delta nu = 900) studies in the 3100-2600 cm-1 (3.2-3.9 microns) range are presented of the protostars NGC 7538 IRS 9, W33A, W3 IRS 5, and S140 IRS 1. This is the spectral region in which the fundamental C-H stretching vibrations of aliphatic hydrocarbons fall. Well-resolved absorption bands at about 2825 cm-1 (3.54 microns) and 2880 cm-1 (3.47 microns) were found superposed on the low-frequency wing of the strong O-H stretch feature. The 2880 cm-1 (3.47 microns) band, a new interstellar feature, is moderately strong in the spectra of all four objects studied. The 2

Earth analogs for Martian life. Microbes in evaporites, a new model system for life on Mars.

The prospect of life on Mars today is daunting. Especially problematic for a potential life form is a lack of water, particularly in a liquid state; extremely cold temperatures; ultraviolet and ionizing radiation; and soil oxidants. Yet, "oases" where life might persist have been suggested to occur in rocks (in analogy with endolithic microorganisms described from deserts around the world), in polar ice caps (in analogy with snow and ice algae) and in possible volcanic regions (in analogy with chemoautotrophs living in deep sea hydrothermal vents); all are critically examined. Microorganisms a

Observations of the microwave emission of Venus from 1.3 to 3.6 cm.

Laboratory measurements of Steffes (1986) have suggested that the intensity and shape of the microwave spectrum of Venus might be especially sensitive to the subcloud abundance of constituents such as SO2 and gaseous H2SO4. It was likewise suggested that some variations of the shape of the emission spectrum might occur between 1.5 and 3 cm (10 to 20 GHz), a wavelength range which had previously only been sparsely observed. As a result, coordinated observations of Venus emission were conducted at four wavelengths between 1.35 cm (22.2 GHz) and 3.6 cm (8.42 GHz) using the 43-m NRAO antenna at Gr

Bioleaching of critical trace metals by Sphingomonas desiccabilis: substrate-driven selectivity in Earth and space analogues.

BACKGROUND: Biotechnological advances are transforming the potential for sustainable resource utilization in space exploration. Biomining, using microorganisms to extract valuable metals, has emerged as a viable strategy for in situ resource utilization (ISRU) in extraterrestrial environments. However, an increasing body of literature is showing that selecting the most efficient bioleaching approach highly depends on the interaction between the microbial species, the type of rock and environmental conditions. In the space biomining context, the heterotrophic bacterium Sphingomonas desiccabilis

A Digital Template for the Generic Multi-Risk (GenMR) Framework: A Virtual Natural Environment.

Extreme disasters, defined as low-probability-high-consequences events, are often due to cascading effects combined to amplifying environmental factors. While such a risk complexity is commonly addressed by the modeling of site-specific multi-risk scenarios, there exists no harmonized approach that considers the full space of possibilities, based on the general relationships between the environment and the perils that populate it. In this article, I define the concept of a digital template for multi-risk R&D and prototyping in the Generic Multi-Risk (GenMR) framework. This digital template con

Epigenetics in Space: The Dynamic Cellular Response.

Space exploration is moving toward the next milestone: space colonization. The risks for human health, associated to the permanence in the space, are already object of studies by several experiments both in orbit and, under simulated space conditions, on hearth. Now, these assessments will need to be extended over the increased permanence, in view of the stable life on other planets. It is well known that the environmental conditions present in the space, primarily related to the altered gravity, introduce a physical stress and the lack of a fundamental bond that contributes to the spatial org

Reactive Iron Mineral Phases on Mars: Implications for Organic Carbon Preservation.

It is estimated that ∼20% of organic carbon stored in sediments on Earth is bound to reactive iron minerals. They often occur as nanoparticulate or X-ray amorphous iron (hydr)oxides, which are challenging to identify with mineralogical techniques-especially those that require any type of heating, which also makes them susceptible to alteration in response to diagenetic processes. Reactive iron species have been identified on Mars in the form of nanophase ferric oxides in Gusev crater and at Meridiani Planum with Spirit's and Opportunity's Mössbauer spectrometers, respectively, and as Fe-rich a

Understanding Sulfate Stability on Mars: A Thermo-Raman Spectroscopy Study.

This work examines the impact of high temperatures from celestial shock events on the stability of sulfates found on Mars (gypsum) and those expected to be present (syngenite and görgeyite). Raman spectroscopy, a cutting-edge technique in space exploration, was used to track their stability. Specifically, a Renishaw inVia™ micro-Raman confocal spectrometer was coupled with an external Linkam THMS600/HF600 temperature-controlled stage to monitor the sample temperature while measuring the main Raman band positions of the sulfates and those of water molecules in these salts across temperatures ra

Effects of microgravity and other space stressors in immunosuppression and viral reactivation with potential nervous system involvement.

Space exploration exposes astronauts to a variety of gravitational stresses. Exposure to a reduced gravity environment affects human anatomy and physiology. Countermeasures to restore homeostatic states within the human body have begun. The pathophysiological effects of exposure to microgravity, on the neurological system, are, however, still not clear. NASA has scheduled deep space exploration of extraterrestrial locations such as the Moon and Mars in the 2030s. Adverse health effects related to the human exposure to microgravity from previous, relatively shorter missions have been documented

The O/OREOS mission: first science data from the space environment viability of organics (SEVO) payload.

We report the first science results from the Space Environment Viability of Organics (SEVO) payload aboard the Organism/Organic Exposure to Orbital Stresses (O/OREOS) free-flying nanosatellite, which completed its nominal spaceflight mission in May 2011 but continues to acquire data biweekly. The SEVO payload integrates a compact UV-visible-NIR spectrometer, utilizing the Sun as its light source, with a 24-cell sample carousel that houses four classes of vacuum-deposited organic thin films: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), amino acid, metalloporphyrin, and quinone.
