Long-term exposure to extreme temperature and high-impact chronic pain among middle-aged and older U.S. adults.

Existing studies have documented associations between daily temperature fluctuations and pain, but less is known about the sustained effects of temperature patterns over longer periods. This study is among the first to examine how prolonged exposure to extreme cold and heat over months and years shapes high-impact chronic pain (HICP) outcomes, including HICP reporting, two-year HICP incidence, and two-year HICP recovery. We linked Health and Retirement Study data (1998-2022) with census tract-level temperature data and applied hierarchical logistic models. Results indicate that high long-term

Mortality related to temperature and persistent extreme temperatures: a study of cause-specific and age-stratified mortality.

OBJECTIVES: High and low ambient temperatures are associated with large numbers of deaths annually. Many studies show higher mortalities during heatwaves. However, such effects are rarely explicitly incorporated in models of temperature and mortality, although dehydration followed by cardiovascular stress is more likely to occur. The authors aim to establish time-series models in which the effects of persistent extreme temperature and temperature in general can be disentangled. METHODS: The authors established time-series Poisson regression models based on cause-specific mortality and age-str

Using the Excess Heat Factor (EHF) to predict the risk of heat related deaths.

Extremes of climate are not uncommon in Australia and heatwaves are not infrequent. Periods of high ambient temperature may result in clusters of heat related deaths, which may place strain on forensic facilities. This paper describes the formulation of the Excess Heat Factor using meteorological data to provide a means of predicting death resulting from periods of extreme heat stress. The 2009 South Australian heatwave had the highest ranked Excess Heat Factor in Adelaide's records. There were 58 heat related deaths, with the bulk of the heat related deaths following the peak Excess Heat Fact

Transcriptomic and Physio-Biochemical Responses of the Fifth-Instar Larvae of Chilo sacchariphagus to High-Temperature Stress.

Chilo sacchariphagus is a destructive sugarcane borer worldwide, and frequent extreme high temperatures disrupt its field populations. Clarifying larval thermal response mechanisms provides theoretical support for pest risk prediction under climate warming. Previous work has illustrated moderate heat induces canonical HSP activation, but the molecular responses of this pest to 41 °C extreme heat remain unclear. As such, we conducted non-reference transcriptome sequencing and 11 physio-biochemical assays on fifth-instar larvae exposed to 41 °C for 12 h (26 °C as control) to characterize its the

Combined and synergistic effects of heat and fine particulate matter on hospitalization among patients with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) are vulnerable to environmental stressors such as extreme heat and air pollution, yet their combined health effects remain poorly understood. METHODS: We assessed the joint impact of extreme heat and fine particulate matter exposure (PM2.5) on the risk of all-cause hospitalization among an ADRD cohort of Medicare beneficiaries aged ≥65 years. Using a time-stratified case-crossover design, we analyzed data from beneficiaries with prior ADRD-related hospitalizations across the contiguous US in 2000-2016. Daily heat index

Climate Change and Heat-related Illness in Older Adults: Implications for Emergency Medicine.

Climate change is increasing the frequency, duration, and intensity of extreme heat events, creating a growing public health threat for older adults. Age-related physiologic decline, comorbid chronic diseases, polypharmacy, and social vulnerability all contribute to reduced heat tolerance and higher rates of heat-related morbidity and mortality. Emergency departments (ED) are increasingly encountering older adults presenting with minor heat illness, heat stroke, and exacerbations of chronic illnesses triggered by heat exposure. This review synthesizes current evidence describing why older adul

Impacts of the Pacific Northwest Heat Dome on preterm birth rates in Oregon and Washington State.

The 2021 Pacific Northwest Heat Dome produced the highest temperatures ever recorded in usually temperate Oregon and Washington State. Under climate change, events as extreme as the Heat Dome are forecasted once to twice per decade rather than once every thousand years. Among other health effects, extreme heat exposure increases risk of preterm birth. However, few studies have evaluated susceptible exposure windows for extreme heat during pregnancy, or quantified effects in historically unexposed populations like those in Oregon and Washington State. We treated the PNW Heat Dome as a natural ex

Data Considerations for Estimating Ambient Heat Exposure for Environmental Epidemiological Studies.

PURPOSE: Extreme heat is a public health threat. We review common meteorological data sets and metrics for estimating heat in epidemiologic studies and recommend practical advice for those just starting in this field. RECENT FINDINGS: Heat can be estimated through a variety of approaches that differ in their spatial resolution, temporal frequency, historical extent, aggregation, and population coverage. Heat exposure is operationalized as air temperature, but heat indices including additional variables (e.g. humidity, solar radiation, wind) capturing different physiological pathways and varyi

Effect of Ambient Temperature on Kidney Function.

BACKGROUND: Extreme ambient temperatures - particularly occupational heat stress - are a major driver of renal dysfunction in resource-limited settings. Such exposures heighten the risk of nephrolithiasis and acute kidney injury (AKI), contributing substantially to global morbidity. SUMMARY: This review outlines the impact of rising environmental temperatures on renal physiology and the risk of heat-related AKI, chronic kidney disease of uncertain etiology (CKDu), and nephrolithiasis. Prolonged heat exposure promotes water and electrolyte losses, reduces renal perfusion, and activates oxidati

Impact of extreme ambient temperatures on low birth weight: Insights from empirical findings in Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to extreme ambient temperatures during pregnancy, including both heat and cold, can lead to complications such as preterm births, low birth weight (LBW), and developmental anomalies. These exposures pose immediate health risks to both mother and child and may exacerbate health disparities across future generations. OBJECTIVE: Pakistan, with limited health resources, is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of extreme temperatures. This study aimed to quantify the association between heat and cold exposure and LBW in Pakistan. DESIGN: Space-time-series study design. MET

Heat and Cardiovascular Mortality: An Epidemiological Perspective.

As global temperatures rise, extreme heat events are projected to become more frequent and intense. Extreme heat causes a wide range of health effects, including an overall increase in morbidity and mortality. It is important to note that while there is sufficient epidemiological evidence for heat-related increases in all-cause mortality, evidence on the association between heat and cause-specific deaths such as cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality (and its more specific causes) is limited, with inconsistent findings. Existing systematic reviews and meta-analyses of epidemiological studies o

Evaluating compliance with HeatSuite for monitoring in situ physiological and perceptual responses and personal environmental exposure.

Extreme heat events pose a significant health threat to vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those living with disease. Recent extreme heat events highlight that heat-related mortality often occurs indoors, urging a need to better understand how at-risk populations physiologically and behaviorally respond in their natural environment. However, a low-cost and scalable all-in-one solution to comprehensively monitor individuals during periods of extreme heat does not presently exist. We developed HeatSuite, a fully data-governed multimodal sensor platform, that can monitor the local env

Extreme climate exposure and cognitive function among older adults in China: The moderating role of age-friendly home modifications.

OBJECTIVES: As climate change accelerates and populations age, the cognitive health risks of extreme climate exposure is increasingly critical. This study investigated whether exposure to extreme heat, cold, and high precipitation affects cognitive function in older adults and whether age-friendly home modifications moderate these relationships. METHODS: We linked three waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (2016, 2018, 2020; 21,789 observations from 7263 adults aged ≥ 60) to prefecture-level daily meteorological data. Extreme climate exposures were defined using location-spec

Species-specific reduction of survival and predation in ladybirds exposed to prolonged and intensified heat waves.

Climate change exacerbates heat waves, threatening ecosystems by disrupting species survival and interactions. Insects are highly sensitive to temperature extremes, exhibiting species-specific stress which can impact community dynamics. Ecosystem services, such as pest control, can therefore be reduced by heat stress. We studied how five ladybird species responded to heat wave conditions, focusing on survival and aphid consumption. While survival was generally unaffected by exposure to realistic heat waves (compared to normal summer temperatures), extreme heat wave (+5°C) reduced survival in f

De-energization as maladaptation: Uneven residential exposure to wildfire Public Safety Power Shutoffs and compound heat.

In response to growing levels of wildfire destruction, electric utility companies are adopting powerline de-energization as an adaptation strategy intended to prevent wildfire ignitions. While reducing wildfire risk, planned de-energizations also expose residents to electricity loss, potentially causing harmful consequences. We investigated the extent to which planned de-energization can be considered a form of maladaptation, in which an adaptive response to a climate-related hazard results in unintended, concurrent harms. To do so, we examined the co-occurrence of Public Safety Power Shutoffs

A protocol to assess insect resistance to heat waves, applied to bumblebees (Bombus Latreille, 1802).

Insect decline results from numerous interacting factors including climate change. One of the major phenomena related to climate change is the increase of the frequency of extreme events such as heat waves. Since heat waves are suspected to dramatically increase insect mortality, there is an urgent need to assess their potential impact. Here, we determined and compared the resistance to heat waves of insects under hyperthermic stress through their time before heat stupor (THS) when they are exposed to an extreme temperature (40°C). For this, we used a new experimental standardised device avail

Heat stress exposure and incidence of chronic kidney disease.

Long-term repeated heat stress may contribute to chronic kidney disease (CKD). In this ecological study, we examined country-level associations between heat stress exposure and CKD incidence using data from 174 countries during 1990-2021. Annual numbers of days with four heat stress levels (moderate, strong, very strong, and extreme) were assessed using the Universal Thermal Climate Index. A weighted heat stress score was generated from these four levels. Linear mixed-effects models were used to evaluate the associations. Each additional day of moderate, strong, very strong, and extreme heat s
