Globe Rupture Secondary to a Spontaneous Suprachoroidal Hemorrhage in a Blind Glaucomatous Eye: A Case Report.

PURPOSE: To report a rare case of globe rupture following a spontaneous expulsive suprachoroidal hemorrhage without a predisposing event. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A 40-year-old man presented with a 3-week history of episodic eye pain, likely associated with uncontrolled glaucoma, and a spontaneous clot exuding from his right eye without a predisposing event. Notably, the patient had a remote past ocular history of posttraumatic glaucoma and untreated retinal detachment from childhood. He underwent uncomplicated evisceration of the right eye with polymethyl methacrylate implantation. C

Cosmetic shell fitting over a sensitive cornea in mild phthisis bulbi using total conjunctival flap.

BACKGROUND: Cosmetic scleral shells provide a superior alternative to enucleation or evisceration in the setting of phthisis bulbi. However, corneal irritation often minimizes the wearing time of a scleral shell. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of a total conjunctival flap covering in the management of mild phthisis bulbi with a sensitive cornea. METHODS: The surgical technique involved a total conjunctival flap covering combined with superficial lamellar keratectomy to allow the fitting of a cosmetic scleral shell over a sensitive cornea. The records of patients with

Adult blindness secondary to vitamin A deficiency associated with an eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: We examined an adult patient who lost one eye due to severe keratomalacia secondary to self-induced vitamin A deficiency. METHODS: This case report provides a clinical, ophthalmologic, and laboratory description in addition to a review of the medical literature. RESULTS: A 33-y-old woman with a 17-y history of an eating disorder presented with bilateral conjunctival xerosis, an infected corneal ulcer in the right eye and a large descemetocele in the left eye. Laboratory and clinical findings were consistent with vitamin A deficiency. Despite a tectonic penetrating keratoplasty, he

Implant extrusion after eye removal for endophthalmitis and panophthalmitis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the rate of orbital implant extrusion and exposure following enucleation or evisceration in patients with endophthalmitis or panophthalmitis, and to assess the influence of infectious etiology, implant type, and surgical technique on extrusion risk. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, and Scopus for studies published between January 1980 and December 2024. Studies were included if they evaluated implant extrusion or exposure following eye removal surgery in patients diagnosed with endophthalmitis or panophthalmitis. Fourteen retrospec

Surgical Outcomes of Deep Superior Sulcus Augmentation Using Acellular Human Dermal Matrix in Anophthalmic or Phthisis Socket.

Patients with anophthalmic or phthisis socket suffer from cosmetic problems. To resolve those problems, the authors present the surgical outcomes of deep superior sulcus (DSS) augmentation using acellular dermal matrix in patients with anophthalmic or phthisis socket. The authors retrospectively reviewed anophthalmic or phthisis patients who underwent surgery for DSS augmentation using acellular dermal matrix. To evaluate surgical outcomes, the authors focused on 3 aspects: the possibility of wearing contact prosthesis, the degree of correction of the DSS, and any surgical complications. The d

Sympathetic ophthalmia following severe fungal keratitis.

CONTEXT: Cervical excision is a risk factor for preterm birth. This suggests that the cervix plays an essential role in the maintenance of pregnancy. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the role of the cervix through proteomic analysis of cervicovaginal fluid (CVF) from pregnant women after trachelectomy surgery, the natural model of a lack of cervix. METHODS: The proteome compositions of CVF in pregnant women after trachelectomy were compared with those in control pregnant women by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and label-free relative quantification. Successful chemical ablation of an intraorbital cyst caused by an eyelid injury and iatrogenic ankyloblepharon formation in a duck.

CASE DESCRIPTION A client-owned 2-year-old 1.8-kg (4-lb) male pet Rouen duck (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) was evaluated because of severe swelling around the left eye following traumatic injury to the upper and lower eyelids and 2 associated surgeries that resulted in the removal of the entire upper and lower eyelid margins. CLINICAL FINDINGS At initial evaluation, ankyloblepharon of the left eye was observed, with no upper or lower eyelid margins and a large, round, fluctuant subcutaneous mass over the left orbit. Orbital exploration and histologic examination revealed a benign cyst consis

Spontaneous corneal perforation with expulsive hemorrhage.

A case of unilateral spontaneous corneal perforation with expulsion of intraocular contents is reported in an old woman with corneal ulcer and hypopyon. Spontaneous corneal perforation with extrusion of intraocular contents is a disastrous and exceptional event that may occur in premature infants or in adults with severe ocular diseases. It is probable that, during the evolution of the corneal ulcer in this case, the organisms had caused necrosis of the cornea, culminating in a corneal perforation followed by a rapid decompression of the anterior chamber with a resultant expulsive hemorrhage.

Prosthetic Rehabilitation of Post-traumatic Eye Defect With a Custom Ocular Prosthesis: A Case Report.

Loss of an eye can have significant psychological and social effects on a patient's well-being. It may result from trauma, infection, congenital conditions, or maxillofacial malignancy. Rehabilitation of an ocular defect with a prosthesis can restore facial harmony and a natural appearance in anophthalmia patients. It also helps improve confidence, esthetics, self-esteem, and quality of life. Stock-eye prostheses are commonly used for the rehabilitation of ocular defects. However, they may not provide an accurate fit due to size mismatch and poor adaptation to the tissue bed, which can comprom

An Atypical Case of Microphthalmos With Cyst: Cyst Masquerading as Phthisical Eye.

A 6-year-old boy diagnosed with congenital microphthalmic OS was referred for prosthetic eye fitting. He was otherwise healthy without known congenital anomalies. His visual acuity was 20/20 in the OD and no light perception in the OS. His disfigured OS with a conjunctivalized opaque cornea appeared smaller than his OD. He had left esotropia with severely restricted ductions in all directions of gaze. The preoperative orbital MRI of the patient revealed a small orbital cyst posteroinferior to the OS. Because the patient could not tolerate the prosthetic eye worn over his disfigured eye, evisce

Endogenous endophthalmitis caused by Aeromonas hydrophila following intravenous blood transfusion.

The genus Aeromonas is a natural inhabitant of aquatic environments. These microorganisms are commonly regarded as pathogens of fish. Aeromonas' involvement in the eye is rare, with only a few reported cases of endogenous endophthalmitis. Here, we report a case of a woman in her early 20s presenting with sudden onset diminution of vision in her right eye, along with pain, redness and whitish opacity following a blood transfusion. Clinical examination suggested endogenous endophthalmitis. Despite negative blood, urine and stool cultures, evisceration and culture of intraocular contents revealed

Artificial eyes and tear measurements.

Ninety-four consecutive persons with unilateral enucleations or eviscerations were tested by the Schirmer I and Schirmer II tests for tear production. The findings on the artificial eye were compared with those on the companion, living (control) eye. The collected data were subjected to statistical analysis. The control eyes were shown to respond in the normal manner, more tears without topical anesthetic than with it. The sockets of artificial eyes produced no more tears without anesthetic than with it. The control eyes produced a normal amount of reflex tears, whereas the sockets of many art

Osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis for end-stage cornea blindness.

We report the first case of Osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (OOKP) who successfully underwent surgery in Malaysia following a grade 4 (severe) chemical injury in both eyes in 2006. The patient's left eye was eviscerated and his right eye underwent penetrating keratoplasty. However, the corneal graft failed and became opaque. His right eye could only perceive light. The OOKP was offered to him hoping to recover some functional vision. He underwent a 2-stage surgery to implant the OOKP into his right eye. However, 2 months post-operation, he developed vitreous haemorrhage. A successful pars plana

Retrobulbar alcohol injection in blind painful eyes.

We studied 39 blind painful eyes in 39 patients who were treated with retrobulbar injection of absolute (96%) alcohol for their severe ocular pain at the King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital from January 1984 to January 1987. There were 21 (54%) male and 18 (46%) female patients; all were followed for at least three months. The protracted ocular pain was mainly due to: end-stage (absolute) glaucoma in 31 (80%) eyes, uveitis or endophthalmitis in four (10%) eyes, or corneal ulcer in two (5%) eyes. One eye had painful phthisis bulbi, and one eye had infraorbital neuralgia. The complications encou
