This study examines the neural activities of participants undergoing vibro-motor reprocessing therapy (VRT) while experiencing motion sickness. We evaluated the efficacy of vibro-motor reprocessing therapy, a novel therapeutic technique based on eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), in reducing motion sickness. Based on visually induced motion sickness in two sets of performed sessions, eight participants were exposed to VRT stimulation in a VRT/non-VRT setting. Simultaneously, brain activity changes were recorded using electroencephalography (EEG) at baseline and during stimul

BACKGROUND: Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a method in psychotherapy effective in treating symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder. The client attends to alternating bilateral visual, auditory or sensory stimulation while confronted with emotionally disturbing material. It is thought that the bilateral stimulation as a specific element of EMDR facilitates accessing and processing of negative material while presumably creating new associative links. We hypothesized that the putatively facilitated access should be reflected in increased activation of the amygdala upon

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by symptoms of re-experiencing, avoidance, negative alterations in cognition and mood, and marked alterations in arousal and reactivity following exposure to a traumatic event. PTSD can be assessed by structured interviews and screening measures in psychiatric and nonpsychiatric settings. Evidence-based psychotherapies are the first-line treatment of PTSD, with cognitive behavioral therapies, such as prolonged exposure, cognitive processing therapy, and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing having the largest body and highest quali

In the French armed forces, the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder is an integral part of military psychiatry, with an expertise that is applied both in the field, close to the wounded, and in France. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a psychotherapy recognized as a first-line treatment for these disorders. Its application to military personnel is proving to be a valuable therapeutic tool, but it can sometimes run up against obstacles to the integration of traumatic memories. These difficulties may be due to the patient's own resistance, to his or her past life history,

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a worldwide public health burden leading to severe impairment. PTSD has a particularly high occurrence among children exposed to potentially traumatic events. Our study aimed to establish the current state of the literature regarding nonpharmacological treatments studied to date to reduce post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in children and adolescents. We conducted the search on three databases: PubMed, Web of Sciences, and Embase, using the following MeSH Terms; stress disorders, post-traumatic, and psychological treatment. We refined the search by a

In this article we describe three interactions between trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and psychosis: 1. many patients with psychotic disorders suffered from traumatic life experiences that play an important role in the onset and content of their psychosis; 2. the experience of psychosis as well as its psychiatric treatment may result in post-traumatic stress symptoms; 3. if psychosis and PTSD occur simultaneously, there is a substantial risk for reciprocal negative reinforcement of both symptom groups as well as for potentially on going traumatization. Although these interaction

Intrusive traumatic memories are a hallmark symptom of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Conventional therapies typically require explicit and emotionally distressing reexposure to trauma cues, often leading to high dropout rates among severely affected patients. This study examined whether trauma memory intrusions could be effectively reduced through unconscious intervention, minimizing emotional distress by subliminally presenting trauma-related visual cues during bilateral eye movement intervention, a core component of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. Four experiments test

UNLABELLED: Rhythmic eye movements performed during eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy have been shown to evoke a physiological de-arousal pattern.
OBJECTIVES: Here, we examined whether the efficacy of a virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) paradigm for phobic patients could be improved by adding rhythmic eye movements.
DESIGN: Spider-phobic patients (N = 53) were randomly assigned to either a group performing rhythmic eye movements or a control group undergoing exposure without such eye movements.
METHODS: During the VRET session, heart rate, electrodermal acti

Sexual assault and abuse can result in severe physical and emotional trauma to the victim. Deploying targeted psychotherapeutic treatment that is individualized for the survivor is important to achieving optimal patient outcomes. There are several valid and evidence-based treatments available for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and interpersonal difficulties that can result from sexual abuse and assault. In this article, the authors discuss psychodynamic psychotherapy, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR) fo

This report reviews and critiques the psychotherapy literature for the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and systematically presents data on sample size, rates of completion and effect sizes. Substantial progress has been made in the use of cognitive behavioral therapies and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing for the resolution of PTSD. Innovations in PTSD treatments are identified. Further advances are needed in the treatment of populations with complex and chronic forms of PTSD such as those found in childhood abuse populations, refugee populations, and those exper

Background: Knowledge of treatment predictors and moderators is important for improving the effectiveness of treatment for PTSD due to childhood abuse. Objective: The first aim of this study was to test the potential predictive value of variables commonly associated with PTSD resulting from a history of repeated childhood abuse, in relation to treatment outcomes. The second aim was to examine if complex PTSD symptoms act as potential moderators between treatment conditions and outcomes.Method: Data were obtained from a randomized controlled trial comparing a phase-based treatment (Skills Traini

AIM: A comparison between two treatments used in the Panic Disorder: EMDR, an evidence-based method for PTSD, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which is nowadays considered the most effective psychotherapeutic approach for this disorder.
METHOD: In order to evaluate any improvement obtained from the adopted treatment, a descriptive analysis through the use of the SPSS software has been carried out, on a sample of 20 subjects, divided in two groups (EMDR and CBT).
RESULTS: From the data obtained, a tendency to improve is already clear from the first evaluation (after 12 sessions), in a

Background: Individuals with bipolar disorder are at increased risk of exposure to traumatic events and associated psychological distress, including affective, cognitive, physiological, and mood-related difficulties. Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) targets unprocessed trauma memory networks underlying these difficulties; however, guidance on adapting EMDR for this population is limited. This study aimed to establish practitioner consensus on adaptations to enhance the accessibility and effectiveness of EMDR for trauma in individuals with bipolar disorder. Methods: A three-r

BACKGROUND: Police are frequently exposed to occupational trauma, making them vulnerable to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health conditions. Through personal and occupational trauma police are also at risk of developing Complex PTSD (CPTSD), associated with prolonged and repetitive trauma. Police Occupational Health Services require effective interventions to treat officers experiencing mental health conditions, including CPTSD. However, there is a lack of guidance for the treatment of occupational trauma.

Numerous studies have provided evidence for the efficacy of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR) in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), including recent studies showing it to be more efficient than therapist-directed flooding. But few theoretical explanations of how EMDR might work have been offered. Shapiro, in her original description of EMDR, proposed that its directed eye movements mimic the saccades of rapid eye movement sleep (REM), but provided no clear explanation of how such mimicry might lead to clinical improvement. We now revisit her origi

The high rate of relapse among heroin users remains a significant public concern in China. In the present study, we utilized a Motivation-Skill-Desensitization-Mental Energy (MSDE) intervention and evaluated its effects on abstinence and mental health. Eighty-nine male heroin users in a drug rehabilitation center were enrolled in the study. The participants in the MSDE intervention group (n=46) received MSDE intervention, which included motivational interviewing, coping skills training, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, and mindfulness-based psychotherapy. The participants in the

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms are part of the normal response to trauma. Most trauma survivors will recover over time without intervention, but a significant minority will develop chronic PTSD, which is unlikely to remit without intervention. Currently, only two medications, sertraline and paroxetine, are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat PTSD, and the combination of brexpiprazole and sertraline and MDMA-assisted therapy have FDA applications pending. These medications, and the combination of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, are not recommended as fir
