Oculopalatal myoclonus: eye movement studies, MRI findings and the difficulty of treatment.

Two cases of oculopalatal myoclonus with bilateral horizontal gaze palsies are presented. The abnormal vertical eye movements developed several months after brain stem haemorrhage. Eye movement measurements showed rhythmical vertical eye movements at similar rates (2.3 Hz and 2.4 Hz), unaffected by attempts to fixate, converge or gaze in any direction. T2-weighted MRI scans showed bilateral enlargement of the inferior olivary nuclei in both cases, which confirms the expected pathology previously demonstrated on autopsy. Both patients had severe oscillopsia and an attempt was made to improve th

Whipple's disease mimicking progressive supranuclear palsy: the diagnostic value of eye movement recording.

Treatable causes of parkinsonian syndromes are rare; Whipple's disease is one of them. A patient is described who presented with a parkinsonian syndrome and abnormal vertical gaze. Measurement of eye movements showed marked slowing of upward saccades, moderate slowing of downward saccades, a full range of voluntary vertical eye movements, curved trajectories of oblique saccades, and absence of square wave jerks. These features, atypical of progressive supranuclear palsy, suggested the diagnosis of Whipple's disease, which was subsequently confirmed by polymerase chain reaction analysis of inte

Eye Movement Abnormalities in Multiple Sclerosis: Pathogenesis, Modeling, and Treatment.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) commonly causes eye movement abnormalities that may have a significant impact on patients' disability. Inflammatory demyelinating lesions, especially occurring in the posterior fossa, result in a wide range of disorders, spanning from acquired pendular nystagmus (APN) to internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO), among the most common. As the control of eye movements is well understood in terms of anatomical substrate and underlying physiological network, studying ocular motor abnormalities in MS provides a unique opportunity to gain insights into mechanisms of disease. Premature saccades: A detailed physiological analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Premature saccades (PSs) are those made with latencies too short for the direction and amplitude to be specifically programmed. We sought to determine the minimum latency needed to establish accurate direction and amplitude, and observed what occurs when saccades are launched before this minimum latency. METHODS: In Experiment 1, 249 normal subjects performed the gap saccade task with horizontal targets. In Experiment 2, 28 normal subjects performed the gap saccade task with the targets placed in eight directions. In Experiment 3, 38 normal subjects, 49 patients with Parkinson's di

Investigating the benefit of adding listening passage preview to repeated readings.

Repeated readings (RR) and listening passage preview (LPP) are commonly used reading fluency interventions. However, relatively little is known about the behavioral changes that occur in children's reading in response to these interventions and what reading behavior, if any, students engage in during LPP. As such, in the current study, 57 third-grade students were randomly assigned to either a RR or LPP + RR condition. Intervention effects were evaluated by measuring students' oral reading fluency and eye-movement (EM) behaviors. Results revealed similar outcomes across measures. Students in b

Self-paced preparation for a task switch eliminates attentional inertia but not the performance switch cost.

The performance overhead associated with changing tasks (the "switch cost") usually diminishes when the task is specified in advance but is rarely eliminated by preparation. A popular account of the "residual" (asymptotic) switch cost is that it reflects "task-set inertia": carry-over of task-set parameters from the preceding trial(s). New evidence for a component of "task-set inertia" comes from eye-tracking, where the location associated with the previously (but no longer) relevant task is fixated preferentially over other irrelevant locations, even when preparation intervals are generous. Perceptual grouping, not emotion, accounts for search asymmetries with schematic faces.

Several different explanations have been proposed to account for the search asymmetry (SA) for angry schematic faces (i.e., the fact that an angry face target among friendly faces can be found faster than vice versa). The present study critically tested the perceptual grouping account, (a) that the SA is not due to emotional factors, but to perceptual differences that render angry faces more salient than friendly faces, and (b) that the SA is mainly attributable to differences in distractor grouping, with angry faces being more difficult to group than friendly faces. In visual search for angry

Goal-directed and goal-less imitation in autism spectrum disorder.

To investigate how people with Autism are affected by the presence of goals during imitation, we conducted a study to measure movement kinematics and eye movements during the imitation of goal-directed and goal-less hand movements. Our results showed that a control group imitated changes in movement kinematics and increased the level that they tracked the hand with their eyes, in the goal-less compared to goal-direction condition. In contrast, the ASD group exhibited more goal-directed eye movements, and failed to modulate the observed movement kinematics successfully in either condition. Thes

Abnormalities of eye movement are associated with work hours in schizophrenia.

Eye movement abnormalities have been reported in schizophrenia; however, their influences on everyday life remain unknown. From data on 69 subjects with schizophrenia and 246 healthy subjects, we found positive correlations between eye movement measures and work hours, which were only significant in subjects with schizophrenia. This relationship was also confirmed in a multi-site dataset including 118 subjects with schizophrenia and 280 healthy subjects. These findings further strengthen our understanding of eye movement abnormalities and their relevance in clinical recovery.

Misdiagnosing Dizzy Patients: Common Pitfalls in Clinical Practice.

This article highlights 5 pitfalls in the diagnosis of common vestibular disorders: (1) overreliance on dizziness symptom type to drive diagnostic inquiry; (2) underuse and misuse of timing and triggers to categorize patients; (3) underuse, misuse, and misconceptions linked to hallmark eye examination findings; (4) overweighting age, vascular risk factors, and neuroexamination to screen for stroke; and (5) overuse and overreliance on head computed tomography to rule out neurologic causes. This article discusses the evidence base describing each pitfall's frequency and likely causes, and potent

Eye-tracking, autonomic, and electrophysiological correlates of emotional face processing in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often have difficulty with social-emotional cues. This study examined the neural, behavioral, and autonomic correlates of emotional face processing in adolescents with ASD and typical development (TD) using eye-tracking and event-related potentials (ERPs) across two different paradigms. Scanning of faces was similar across groups in the first task, but the second task found that face-sensitive ERPs varied with emotional expressions only in TD. Further, ASD showed enhanced neural responding to non-social stimuli. In TD only, attention to eyes duri

Selective defects of visual tracking in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP): implications for mechanisms of motion vision.

Smooth ocular tracking of a moving visual stimulus comprises a range of responses that encompass the ocular following response (OFR), a pre-attentive, short-latency mechanism, and smooth pursuit, which directs the retinal fovea at the moving stimulus. In order to determine how interdependent these two forms of ocular tracking are, we studied vertical OFR in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a parkinsonian disorder in which vertical smooth pursuit is known to be impaired. We measured eye movements of 9 patients with PSP and 12 healthy control subjects. Subjects viewed vertically moving sine

Downbeat nystagmus caused by a paramedian ponto-medullary lesion.

Downbeat nystagmus (DBN) is rarely caused by lesions in sites other than the cerebellar (para-)floccular lobe. We describe a case of DBN secondary to a hemorrhaged venous cavernoma at the pontomedullary junction. This case provides new insights into the neuro-anatomical substrate of DBN. We propose that DBN arises from lesions in a brainstem-cerebellar feedback loop, which comprises cells of the pontine paramedian tract (PMT).

Eye-movement training-induced changes of visual field representation in patients with post-stroke hemianopia.

Changes in neuronal activity have been described in patients with hemianopia following ischemic lesions of the visual cortex. This reorganization may facilitate compensation of lost visual function that is rarely fully restituted. Improving exploratory eye movements with appropriate training has been shown to partially compensate for the visuoperceptive impairment during daily life activities. The changes in cortical processing of visual stimuli that may be induced by these training strategies, however, are less well described. We used fMRI to study the training effects of eye-movement trainin

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate feasibility of near-real-time oculodynamic magnetic resonance imaging (od-MRI) in depicting extraocular muscles and correlate quantitatively the motion degree in comparison with clinical testing in patients with diplopia. METHODS: In 30 od-MRIs eye movements were tracked in the horizontal and sagittal plane using a a TrueFISP sequence with high temporal resolution. Three physicians graded the visibility of extraocular muscles by a qualitative scale. In 12 cases, the maximal monocular excursions in the horizontal and vertical direction of both eyes were measured in od

The influence of repetitive eye movements on vergence performance.

We measured the peak velocity of convergence eye movement responses in four normal subjects before and after a large number of either repetitive vergence or repetitive saccadic eye movements. A 20% decrease in the mean value of peak velocity was observed in vergence responses after 100 repetitive step vergence eye movements. However, 100 cycles of slow sinusoidal vergence tracking did not induce any notable change in vergence dynamics. Five hundred repetitive saccadic eye movements also caused an approximately 20% decrease in peak velocity. The reduction in peak velocity was related to the num

The activation pattern in normal humans during suppression, imagination and performance of saccadic eye movements.

The distribution of activated cerebral regions was examined in nine normal subjects during four different eye movement-related conditions: (1) fixation-fixation on a central light emitting diode; (2) saccadic suppression-fixation on a diode in the presence of flashing lateral targets; (3) reflexive/volitional saccades-performance of overt eye movements to two laterally lit targets and back to the centre; and (4) imagined saccades-imagining, but not performing, the same eye movements. Facial paralysis measurement with a handheld ruler.

BACKGROUND: Evaluation of the severity of facial paralysis deformity and the effectiveness of reconstructive surgery requires a measurement tool that is practical and simple enough for daily use. It should be able to objectively measure facial asymmetry at rest and the amount of facial movement during expression. The authors present and assess a simple measurement technique that is readily usable in the clinic. Designed to evaluate smile reconstruction, the technique can be used to evaluate other parts of the paralyzed face, such as the eye, nose, and forehead. METHODS: A standardized handhel

A review of studies exploring fetal alcohol spectrum disorders through eye tracking measures.

The widespread cognitive and cerebral consequences of prenatal alcohol exposure have been established during the last decades, through the exploration of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) using neuropsychological and neuroscience tools. This research field has recently benefited from the emergence of innovative measures, among which eye tracking, allowing a precise measure of the eye movements indexing a large range of cognitive functions. We propose a comprehensive review, based on PRISMA guidelines, of the eye tracking studies performed in populations with FASD. Studies were selected f
