Saccadic eye movements of dyslexic and normal reading children.

Twenty-four children made saccades in five noncognitive tasks. Two standard tasks required saccades to a single target presented randomly 4 deg to the right or left of a fixation point. Three other tasks required sequential saccades from the left to the right. 75 parameters of the eye-movement data were collected for each child. On the basis of their reading, writing, and other cognitive performances, twelve children were considered dyslexic and were divided into two groups (D1 and D2). Group statistical comparisons revealed significant differences between control and dyslexic subjects. In gen

An explanation of eye movements seen in internuclear ophthalmoplegia.

Recent findings in experiments on monkeys show that a horizontal saccade is made by a pulse-step of neural activity, part of which rises to medial rectus (MR) motoneurons on the fibers of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF). If inhibitory as well as excitatory fibers run in the MLF, then the data show that each MLF must carry both the excitatory and inhibitory activity required for contralateral, horizontal saccades. Therefore, interruption of these fibers removes not only excitation from the ipsilateral MR but inhibition from the contralateral MR. Such a lesion also disturbs the correct

Eye movements reflect capacity-dependent organization of working memory.

Human cognition is capacity-limited, requiring strategies to actively structure information. Eye movements offer a natural mechanism for sequential sampling, but whether such sequences reflect memory organization is unknown. We developed a working-memory task where color-frequency pairings created a latent ordinal structure to optimally reduce memory load. Across two experiments, gaze patterns spontaneously aligned with this structure. Participants sampled items following this sequence during encoding and revisited them during maintenance. Critically, the expression of this structure depended

Universal patterns in eye movements across lines of text.

This study examines cross-linguistic patterns of eye movements before, during, and after return sweeps-the saccades that move readers' gaze from one line of text to the next. Using data from 28 language samples representing 22 languages and multiple writing systems from the Multilingual Eye Movement Corpus project, we tested whether spatial and temporal characteristics of interline transitions reflect universal oculomotor mechanisms or language-specific factors. Results show that extreme fixations cover about 80% of each line across all languages, and fixation durations follow consistent posit

Effect of Prior Haptic Object Exploration on Eye Movements.

Interaction with objects typically involves both vision and touch. Understanding how visual and haptic information interact during object exploration is essential to uncovering the mechanisms of multisensory shape perception. We investigated whether haptic exploration influences subsequent eye movements, using a cross-modal shape comparison task. Participants (N = 22) explored 3D replicas of bell peppers either haptically or visually, and subsequently viewed the same or a different object. We tracked eye movements during visual explorations. Comparing uni-modal visual to cross-modal, haptic-to

Retrieval-related Eye Movements Are Predictive of Memory Precision.

Eye movements are predictive of successful episodic memory encoding and retrieval, but it is unclear whether they reflect the precision of retrieved memory content. Here, we examined relationships between eye fixations, memory precision, and fMRI BOLD activity. At study, participants were presented with object images, each placed at a random location on a circle. At test, both studied and new images were presented. Participants were instructed to recall and signal the studied location of each image, guessing if necessary. They then indicated if the image had been studied. Simultaneous fMRI and

Sensorimotor awareness requires intention: Evidence from minuscule eye movements.

Microsaccades are tiny eye movements typically occurring spontaneously and without awareness but can also be intentionally controlled with high precision. We used these tiny visual actions to investigate how intention modulates sensorimotor awareness by directly comparing intended (upon instruction), unintended (occurring despite instruction to fixate), and spontaneous microsaccades. In addition, we dissociated the effects of action intention and the actions' visual consequences on awareness. To achieve this, we presented a stimulus at high temporal frequency rendering it invisible during stab

Belief embodiment through eye movements facilitates memory-guided navigation.

The brain evolved to navigate a dynamic and uncertain world, but the mechanisms underlying ethologically-relevant behavioral strategies remain unclear. In the real-world, such strategies are shaped both by task demands and by the cognitive resources available to the animal. We hypothesized that eye movements constitute a vital cognitive resource to support neural computations for memory-guided navigation. We tested this using a naturalistic task in which humans use a joystick to steer and catch flashing targets in a virtual environment lacking explicit position cues. While navigating to the go

Eye movements during free viewing to maximize scene understanding.

What humans look at and do when freely viewing a scene is not well understood. We measure observer eye movements under different instructions while participants view a customized set of image pairs containing small visual alterations that greatly change scene interpretation (Winograd images). We show that free-viewing fixations resemble those of observers describing scenes but differ from those of observers counting or searching for objects. Fixations are more often directed toward people and objects whose removal most alters scene interpretation, rather than toward the most salient or meaning

Assessing inter-ocular fixational eye movements throughout the lifespan.

This study aims to assess fixational eye movements (FEMs) obtained under binocular and monocular viewing in normal individuals across different age groups. We recruited 68 healthy participants divided into Group 1 (children, 3-9 years, n = 20), Group 2 (adolescents, 10-19 years, n = 26), and Group 3 (adults, 20-73 years, n = 22). FEMs were collected using a high-resolution video-based tracker under 3 viewing conditions: binocular viewing (BV), monocular viewing right eye (MV_RE), and monocular viewing left eye (MV_LE). We quantified fixation stability, the frequency, amplitude, and disconjugac

Eyeball translations affect saccadic eye movements beyond brainstem control.

Vision requires that we rotate our eyes frequently to look at informative structures in the scene. Eye movements are planned by the brain but their execution depends on the mechanical properties of the oculomotor plant, that is, the arrangement of eyeball position, muscle insertions, and pulley locations. Therefore, the biomechanics of rotations is sensitive to eyeball translation because it changes muscle levers. Eyeball translations are little researched as they are difficult to measure with conventional techniques. Here, we investigated the effects of eyeball translation on the coordination

Eye Movements in Fragile X-Associated Tremor/Ataxia Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by ataxia, tremor, and parkinsonism. Eye motility abnormalities on the clinical examination of FXTAS patients have not been formally studied. METHODS: A case-control study with fragile X gene mutation carriers with and without FXTAS and normal controls was conducted and included a videotaping of ocular items of the International Cooperative Ataxia Rating Scale (ICARS). A neuro-ophthalmologist blinded to gene status rated nystagmus, ocular pursuit, and saccades. RESULTS: Forty-four ca

Saccadic eye movements in juvenile variant of Huntington disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Huntington disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disease leading to involuntary movements, cognitive and behavior decline. The juvenile variant of HD (JHD) manifests in people younger than 21 and is characterized by a different clinical presentation, i.e. rigidity and bradykinesia. Rapid eye movements were not extensively studied in patients with JHD. Aims of our study were to describe the saccadic eye movements in JHD patients and to find a correlation between the saccade abnormalities, severity of the disease and cognitive and behavior deterioration. Vergence eye movements are not essential for stereoscopic depth.

The brain receives disparate retinal input owing to the separation of the eyes, yet we usually perceive a single fused world. This is because of complex interactions between sensory and oculomotor processes that quickly act to reduce excessive retinal disparity. This implies a strong link between depth perception and fusion, but it is well established that stereoscopic depth percepts are also obtained from stimuli that produce double images. Surprisingly, the nature of depth percepts from such diplopic stimuli remains poorly understood. Specifically, despite long-standing debate it is unclear

Impaired exploratory eye movements in children with Asperger's syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Previous eye-tracking studies using an eye mark recorder have reported that disturbances in exploratory eye movements in adult schizophrenic patients are associated with social functioning. The current study sought to determine whether exploratory eye-movement disturbances are present in children with Asperger's syndrome (AS) compared with typically developing (TD) children. MATERIALS/PARTICIPANTS: The participants were 23 children with AS and 23 age-matched TD children. We measured exploratory eye movements using an EMR-8B eye mark recorder and an exploratory eye movement-measuring

[Functional analysis of the thalamocortical pathways in eye movements].

Although the roles of the thalamocortical pathways in somatic movements are well documented, their roles in eye movements have only recently been examined. The oculomotor-related areas in the frontal cortex receive inputs from the basal ganglia and the cerebellum via the thalamus. Consistent with this, neurons in the paralaminar part of the ventrolateral (VL), ventroanterior (VA), and mediodorsal (MD) nuclei and those in the intralaminar nuclei exhibit a variety of eye movement-related responses. To date, the thalamocortical pathways are known to play at least 2 roles in eye movements. First,
