This paper reports the case of a patient with optic nerve schwannoma and the first use of neurophysiological intraoperative monitoring of visual evoked potentials during the removal of such tumor with no postoperative visual damage. Schwannomas are benign neoplasms of the peripheral nervous system arising from the neural crest-derived Schwann cells, these tumors are rarely located in the optic nerve and the treatment consists on surgical removal leading to high risk of damage to the visual pathway. Case report of a thirty-year-old woman with an optic nerve schwannoma. The patient underwent sur

Pediatric tumors of the eye and orbit can be benign or malignant as well as congenital or acquired and are usually distinctively different than those seen in adults. Although most of these neoplasms are benign (eg, dermoid cyst, chalazion, molluscum), their location near and within a vital organ can result in serious dermatologic and ophthalmologic sequelae. Lesions discussed include vascular lesions, retinoblastomas (the most common primary pediatric intraocular malignancy), rhabdomyosarcoma (the most common primary pediatric orbital malignancy), Langerhans cell histiocytosis, and metastatic

Subconjunctival hemorrhages commonly present to eye care professionals and are frequently regarded as benign self-limited conditions. In selected cases, subconjunctival hemorrhages can be a harbinger of more severe disease. Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors, or PEComas, are rare mesenchymal neoplasms believed to originate from perivascular myoid cells and are rarely present in ocular structures. We present a rare case of a conjunctival perivascular epithelioid cell tumor that initially presented with recurrent subconjunctival hemorrhage. To our knowledge, this is the first description of a

Eye globe abnormalities can be readily detected on dedicated and non-dedicated CT and MR studies. A primary understanding of the globe anatomy is key to characterising both traumatic and non-traumatic globe abnormalities. The globe consists of three primary layers: the sclera (outer), uvea (middle), and retina (inner layer). The various pathological processes involving these layers are highlighted using case examples with fundoscopic correlation where appropriate. In the emergent setting, trauma can result in hemorrhage, retinal/choroidal detachment and globe rupture. Neoplasms and inflammator

Syringomas are benign neoplasms of the skin commonly appearing around the eye lids. Though common in middle-aged women, it affects all age groups. The lesions are asymptomatic, firm, discrete, translucent or skin colored flat-topped papules. Once papules of syringoma come into being, which usually is after puberty, they remain as they are for a lifetime. Disseminated lesions appearing on the abdomen, scalp and genital area has been described earlier. We report the disseminated form (eruptive) syringoma involving the trunk, the neck, and the upper extremities while sparing the face. Our case cr

OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this review is to critically evaluate the present evidence regarding a relationship between ocular melanoma (OM) and cutaneous melanoma (CM). Melanomas are malignant neoplasms that develop from dendritic melanocytes that are found in the skin, eye, mucosal epithelia, and leptomeninges. While the skin is the most common site of melanoma development, these neoplasms can occur in any tissue that contains melanocytes. We review the incidence and characteristics of OM, evaluate the existent data regarding its potential relationship to CM, and provide some guidance

From a review of the records of 2,302 patients with retinoblastoma collated from CPMC and AFIP, it was found that retinoblastoma patients who survived their original eye cancer have a high incidence of second nonocular malignancies. The second neoplasms occur almost exclusively (97.5%) in patients who have had bilateral retinoblastoma, although retinoblastoma is much more commonly unilateral. The second neoplasms have appeared between 1 and 42 years after the successful treatment of retinoblastoma and have been fatal in approximately 85% of cases. Seventy-one percent of patients develop tumors

Idiopathic orbital inflammatory pseudotumor is a chronic neoplasm-like inflammatory reaction, usually affecting the orbital tissues of both eyes and orbit. Isolated optic nerve involvement by the idiopathic inflammatory process is a rare finding and very few reports are available. Here a case of an isolated orbital nerve inflammatory pseudotumor presenting with gradually progressive unilateral loss of vision is described. It showed dramatic response to surgery and steroid treatment and its differential diagnoses are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Leiomyosarcomas of soft tissue are malignant tumours that are not infrequently encountered in clinical medicine and histopathology. Such sarcomas of the eye are, however, a rare occurrence.
PURPOSE: Herein, the histopathological features of a case of conjunctival leiomyosarcoma are described. A 38-year-old HIV-positive male, who was otherwise fit and healthy, presented with redness of his right eye and a mass of the conjunctiva. Clinically, he did not have any soft-tissue masses elsewhere in the body.
METHOD: He underwent monoblock excision of the conjunctival mass which was conf

Inherited molecular defects in nucleotide excision repair genes cause the autosomal recessive condition xeroderma pigmentosum. Xeroderma pigmentosum is characterized by photo-hypersensitivity of sun-exposed tissues, and by a several thousand-fold increase in the risk of developing malignant neoplasms of the skin and of the eyes. Mutations in xeroderma pigmentosum genes that regulate nucleotide excision repair, not only predispose persons with xeroderma pigmentosum to multiple malignancies, but also promote premature cutaneous and ocular ageing, and in some cases promote progressive neurodegene

OBJECTIVE: To compare ultrasonographic and histologic examination findings for eyes of animals with ocular diseases.
DESIGN: Retrospective case series.
ANIMALS: 116 eyes of 113 animals examined at 2 facilities.
PROCEDURES: Diseased eyes of animals were examined by means of ultrasonography, removed via enucleation or exenteration, then histologically examined. Ultrasonographic images and histopathologic slides were evaluated, and diseases of eyes were identified with each of those methods and allocated to various categories. For each disease category, agreement between results of ultrasonogr

2,600 patients (1,416 females and 1,244 males) were consulted in the lone eye department of the Western Province of the Republic of Cameroon during the one-year period from 1st March 1991 to 29th February 1992. 176 or 7% (68 females and 108 males) were found to be blind in both eyes (bilateral blindness); while a further 202 or 8% (79 females and 123 males) were found to be blind in one eye (unilateral blindness). The main causes of bilateral blindness were: cataract (43.2%), glaucoma (20.4%), uveitis (8.5%), onchocerciasis (8.5%), cortical and visual pathway dysfunction (7.4%), and others (12

A 70-year-old male presented with diplopia and painless proptosis of the left eye for 5 months. Examination showed 6 mm of axial proptosis and restriction of supraduction, abduction and adduction, and mild limitation of infraduction of the left eye. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a large, moderately well-circumscribed intraconal mass in the left lateral orbit, and excisional biopsy was performed. Histopathologic features of mixed fibrous and myxoid areas in a whorl-like pattern and immunohistochemical staining for MUC4 confirmed the diagnosis of low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS).

Bovine ocular squamous cell carcinoma (BOSCC) also called cancer eye, represents the most economically important neoplasm in large animals. Hereditary factors, environmental factors, lack of eyelid pigmentation, age and dietary habits have all been reported to play a role in the etiopathogenesis of bovine ocular squamous cell carcinoma. In group I, six animals with small, localized eye cancer where vision was not affected were included and subjected to intralesional injection of Bacillus Calmette- Guerin (BCG) vaccine at 0, 14, 35, and 56 days interval. In group II (six animals), surgical exci

PURPOSE: To report a rare presentation of metastatic testicular cancer to the uvea.
METHODS: Observational case report.
RESULTS: A 24-year-old man without known systemic illness presented with acute total loss of vision and severe pain in his left eye and associated nausea, anorexia, and dehydration. He was found to have a total hyphema, high intraocular pressure, and a ciliary body mass (by computed tomography scan and ultrasound biomicroscopy). The affected eye was enucleated, and pathologic study showed a hemorrhagic poorly differentiated neoplasm of the ciliary body. Subsequent patient e

INTRODUCTION: Uveal melanocytomas are benign melanocytic proliferations characterized histologically by large polyhedral cells, abundant intracytoplasmic melanin, small centrally located nuclei, and low nuclear-to-cytoplasmic ratios (N:C). Activating missense changes of the G-protein subunits, GNAQ/GNA11, drive uveal melanocytic proliferation and are characteristic molecular mutations found in intraocular nevi including melanocytomas, as well as malignant uveal melanomas. Sequencing of uveal melanocytic proliferations from biopsies or enucleations identifies these mutations and complements tra

A 15-year-old male dromedary camel with a history of chronic severe keratoconjunctivitis and corneal mass in the left eye of 6 months' duration was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at Adnan Menderes University. A superficial keratectomy was performed and biopsy material submitted for histopathology. The diagnosis was corneal papilloma. There has been no recurrence of the neoplasm to date (6 months, 1 year). Corneal papilloma has not been reported previously in camels and seems to be associated with papillomavirus.

Glomangiopericytoma is a rare vascular neoplasm of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses that occurs during the sixth or seventh decade of life. It is categorized as a borderline tumor with low malignant potential and classified as a distinct entity of sinonasal tumors with perivascular myoid phenotype by the World Health Organization (WHO). We report the case of a 50-year-old woman with nasal obstruction and severe epistaxis. The nasal sinuses computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a 3.1 cm soft tissue mass occupying the upper part of the left nasal cavit

Cutaneous meningiomas are rare tumors of ectopic meningeal tissue in the dermis or subcutis and are most commonly located on the scalp and around the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. We present a case of cutaneous meningioma with an unusual presentation on the upper arm, but with positivity for epithelial membrane antigen to support the diagnosis of meningioma. Lack of pancytokeratin AE1/3 and p63 allowed us to rule out a keratinocytic tumor, such as squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. The absence of smooth muscle actin, FXIIIa, CD163, and CD34 allowed us to rule out a leiomyoma, der
