This is the first published report of the swimmer's nose deformity. This common athletic deformity has a characteristic, asymmetric dorsolateral nasal hump that progressively develops over years during a competitive swimming career and persists after cessation of the sport. The cause is thought to be bone and soft tissue remodeling in response to repetitive trauma chronically inflicted by a swimmer's goggles during the water reentry phase of breathing.

OBJECTIVES: To describe ocular injuries caused by badminton and to explore the implications for future prevention strategies.
METHODS: We enrolled 85 patients with ocular trauma caused by badminton. Information collected from patients included type of game, instigator, instrument of injury and lessons in badminton from a professional, and ocular trauma information such as type of injury, treatment and final outcomes.

PURPOSE: To describe the spectrum of ophthalmic injuries in children involved in all-terrain vehicle (ATV) crashes.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of a level 1 children's trauma center to identify cases with ICD-9 codes pertaining to crashes involving ATVs and cross-referenced for ophthalmic trauma. From these cases, we documented the nature of the crash, patient's age, ophthalmic injuries received, and length of hospitalization.
RESULTS: Twenty children, 5 to 16 years of age (mean, 11.1 years), involved in ATV crashes were admitted between June 1997 and April 2002.

There is a growing body of literature describing severe surfing-related ocular injuries that result in permanent vision loss. We describe three severe surfing-related ocular injuries that occurred on beaches in northern California. One particular case stresses the need to tailor treatment to the patient and injury because of the possibility of good outcomes despite severe injury. Attention should also be directed towards commercially available safety gear and providing additional safety measures to prevent other orbital and ocular injuries.

PURPOSE: To investigate the influence of a short period of elevated IOP (induced through the wearing of standard swimming goggles) upon axial length.
METHODS: Forty young adult subjects (20 myopes and 20 emmetropes, mean age 22 ± 2 years) had their IOP and axial length measured before, during and after a 3 min period of swimming goggle wear. IOP was measured using a non-contact tonometer, and axial length with an optical biometer based upon the principle of partial coherence interferometry.

Little information is available on the incidence and severity of eye injuries despite the disfigurement and vision loss they cause. From a population-based study in Dane County, Wisconsin, the incidence of acute hospital-treated eye injuries was 423/100,000 residents in 1979. A review of all penetrating eye injuries treated at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital over 5 years (January 1st 1982 to December 31st 1986) was undertaken. There were 258 penetrating eye injuries of which 69 (26.7%) were due to work-related accidents. All were men and 52 (75.4%) of them were under the age of 40 years.
