This report describes the surgical-orthodontic treatment of two adult females who exhibited dentofacial asymmetry. Their medical histories included early condylar fractures. Growth was disturbed on the fractured side, resulting in mandibular deviation and maxillary canting. Following the completion of growth, the asymmetries were corrected by combined orthodontic-surgical treatment. The treatment planning procedures and the results are presented.

The paper reports four visual half-field experiments on the recognition of schematic faces whose emotional expression varied. Experiments I and II tested accuracy of recognition in a match-to-sample task. The results confirmed an overall left visual-field superiority in face recognition, but an analysis of a subset of the stimuli indicated that the direction and magnitude of the perceptual asymmetry depend upon the sign of the emotional expression. BACKGROUND: The appearance of cosmetic deformities of the orbit can be improved by eye glasses. The optical methods can improve the final outcome after orbital or facial reconstructive surgery. These methods are not widely known among ophthalmologists and plastic and reconstructive surgeons.
PATIENTS: Four typical patients are presented. Two patients had vertical displacement of one globe, one patient had microphthalmus and one patient buphthalmus.
RESULTS: The appearance of the cosmetic deformities improved by finding eye glasses with prismatic, hyperopic or myopic glasses.
CONCLUSION: Pat

Maxillary antral mucoceles are extremely rare. We report a case of a large antral mucocele presenting with facial asymmetry. The CT scan was essential for delineating the extent of the lesion and aiding in the pre-operative diagnosis. The pathogenesis, clinical features and radiological aspects of this entity are reviewed.

In the present experiment, we report a right hemisphere advantage for autonomic conditioning to facial emotional expressions. Specifically, angry, but not happy, facial expressions showed significantly more resistance to extinction when presented initially to the right as compared to the left hemisphere. This article highlights a certain number of clinical conditions where one can encounter facial asymmetry. Among the many different etiological factors detailed are developmental anomalies, including those associated with under-development or over-development, asymmetry associated with trauma, as well as, those related to tumors. An in-depth analysis will allow a dentist to review differential diagnosis relative to asymmetry and note those within their competency level.

In normal adults, emotional expressions tend to be more intense on the left side of the face, while in preschool-age children, no significant bias in facial asymmetry has been found. We examined facial asymmetries during smiling and distress in 59 infants studied longitudinally at 6.5, 10 and 13.5 months of age. In these infants, asymmetric expressions showed a bias toward greater intensity on the right side of the face. The study of infant facial expression may provide clues to the maturation of the cortical control of emotional responses.

Authors report nine cases of asymmetric crying facies related to congenital aplasia or hypoplasia of depressor anguli oris muscle (DAOM). The interest of this abnormality consists in the frequently associated malformations (over 50%), specifically, congenital heart disease, urogenital, musculoskeletal and cervicofacial. This association occurs in five of our cases. Its genetical condition is significant: 22% in our own series. The paper emphasizes the easiness of diagnosis (merely observing the baby crying) and also its frequency, higher than usually thought.

Sturge-Weber syndrome is a rare neurocutaneous disease, also called encephalotrigeminal angiomatosis. In this study, we aimed to present a patient with Sturge-Weber syndrome who had atypical radiological findings and with dural arteriovenous fistula. The patient presented with hemifacial asymmetry. Sturge-Weber syndrome may present with atypical radiological findings and additional pathologies.
