Long-term results of remodelling the facial bones with a soft moulding helmet in beagles: the "reciprocally stimulated growth" hypothesis.

Facial deformity is often seen in infants with deformational plagiocephaly and it usually improves with conservative management. However, we know of few studies of the effect of helmet treatment on the facial skeleton. Our aim therefore was to find out its long-term effects on skull remodelling, and on the shape of the face. Seven beagles wore helmets for seven weeks after birth. Seven study beagles and 3 controls were killed and we measured the length, width, and height of the skulls, maxillas, and mandibles. Statistical analysis showed that the total craniofacial length and skull length did

Achieving Predictable Facial Bone Reconstruction at Immediate Implant Placement Utilizing the Facial Allograft Shield Technique.

Resorption following tooth loss often presents challenges to both functional and esthetic outcomes of dental implant treatment for lost dentition, especially in the esthetic zone. Inadequate bone volume at the implant site is common, and bone augmentation is often required. While autogenous bone is often preferred, it is not applicable in many cases. This can necessitate multiple surgeries and extended healing times for patients. In such situations an alternate protocol, the facial allograft shield technique using an allogeneic laminar bone membrane, appears to offer a minimally invasive, effe

Are Facial Soft Tissue Injury Patterns Associated With Facial Bone Fractures Following Motorcycle-Related Accident?

PURPOSE: The unprotected nature of motorcycle riding exposes motorcyclists to an elevated risk of sustaining facial soft tissue injuries (STIs); however, its link with underlying facial bone fractures remains unexplored. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the type and site of STI sustained by motorcyclists were associated with the presence of underlying facial bone fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients identified from the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Center trauma census who had

Differences in the diameter of facial nerve and facial canal in bell's palsy--a 3-dimensional temporal bone study.

UNLABELLED: Bell's palsy is hypothesized to result from virally mediated neural edema. Ischemia occurs as the nerve swells in its bony canal, blocking neural blood supply. Because viral infection is relatively common and Bell's palsy relatively uncommon, it is reasonable to hypothesize that there are anatomic differences in facial canal (FC) that predispose the development of paralysis. Measurements of facial nerve (FN) and FC as it follows its tortuous course through the temporal bone are difficult without a 3D view. In this study, 3D reconstruction was used to compare temporal bones of patie

Current Practices for Esthetic Facial Bone Contouring Surgery in Asians.

In this article, authors mainly introduce new digital technology in facial bone contouring surgery. In our experience, these new technologies are crucial in ensuring the satisfaction of surgical accuracy. Our previous studies have shown surgeons can use precise pre-operative design to reduce operative time, reduce bleeding during surgery. Additionally, augmented reality can enhance the perspective perception of surgeons combining virtuality and reality. What's more, robot-assisted surgical technology also has a strong application prospect in facial contouring surgery. In the future, the combin

Isolated Facial Nerve Palsy Due to Temporal Bone Metastasis.

Isolated facial nerve palsy resulting from temporal bone metastasis is rare and has been sparsely reported in the literature to be the initial presentation of cancer. The most commonly reported sites of origin of such metastases include the breast, lung, kidney, gastrointestinal tract, larynx, prostate, and thyroid, to name a few. Here, we discuss a patient initially presenting with isolated lower motor neuron facial nerve palsy. The diagnosis was revised to that of breast cancer with metastasis to the temporal bone resulting in facial nerve paralysis following the subsequent clinical presenta

Osteoradionecrosis of the Temporal Bone as a Rare Cause of Facial Nerve Palsy.

We present a case of a 69-year-old male who presented with acute left facial nerve palsy, serous bloody otorrhea, otalgia, and exposed necrotic bone on the floor of his left ear canal. His medical history revealed a left canal wall-down (CWD) mastoidectomy thirty years ago. Subsequently, twenty years later, he received primary chemoradiotherapy for tonsil cancer on the same side. The patient's medical history, the typical clinical picture, and a comprehensive diagnostic workup, including imaging modalities and electrophysiology, finally led to a diagnosis of osteoradionecrosis of the temporal

Facial nerve palsy associated with a cystic lesion of the temporal bone.

Facial nerve palsy results in the loss of facial expression and is most commonly caused by a benign, self-limiting inflammatory condition known as Bell palsy. However, there are other conditions that may cause facial paralysis, such as neoplastic conditions of the facial nerve, traumatic nerve injury, and temporal bone lesions. We present a case of facial nerve palsy concurrent with a benign cystic lesion of the temporal bone, adjacent to the tympanic segment of the facial nerve. The patient's symptoms subsided after facial nerve decompression via a transmastoid approach.
