In a 7-year retrospective analysis (1991-97) of the records of the Department of Haematology, Regional Laboratory and Blood Bank (Dammam), 54 patients from all parts of Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province were diagnosed with hereditary coagulation factor deficiencies. The largest group of patients, 42 haemophiliacs, included 4 non-Saudi patients. There were 39 haemophilia A or factor VIII deficiency patients, 2 haemophilia B or factor IX deficiency patients and 1 combined factor VIII and V deficiency patient. There were 5 Saudi patients with probable factor XIII deficiency, and 7 patients, all but

INTRODUCTION: Factor XIII deficiency is a rare bleeding disorder which could be severe if inherited or less severe if acquired. We report a case of acquired Factor XIII inhibitor in a 75-year-old male with a suspicious left renal mass treated perioperatively with therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE).
PATIENT AND METHOD: To perform kidney biopsy and ablation of the renal mass, six daily TPE treatments were performed before and after biopsy to minimize bleeding risk because the patient did not respond to drug therapy. Both thromboelastography (TEG) and laboratory-based coagulation tests were perfo

Congenital factor XIII (FXIII) deficiency is an extremely rare hemorrhagic disorder characterized by a deficiency of FXIII and associated with a high rate of morbidity and mortality. The disorder is more frequent in Iran, especially in Khash, a city in the southeast of the country. As identified in the current report, the prevalence of FXIII deficiency in this city is 1 homozygote per approximately 500 population (which is ∼4,000 times higher than the worldwide prevalence) with 3.5% heterozygotes. The disorder is accompanied by a high rate of mortality in rural areas of Khash, given an average

BACKGROUND: Rare bleeding disorders include inherited coagulation disorders except for von Willebrand disease and hemophilia A and B. These disorders affect both men and women worldwide and mainly have an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance. Given the paucity of cases of rare bleeding disorders, there are limited data regarding some topics among bleeding disorders.
METHODS: This retrospective study from 2005-2019 collected demographic data and the causes of death among cases with rare bleeding disorders from 2 provinces of Iran.
RESULTS: Overall, 5 deaths were reported, including 3 ca

Factor XIII (FXIII) plays an important role in the field of blood coagulation. In the last decade, both congenital and acquired deficiencies have been investigated in clinical studies. FXIII is a versatile enzyme that leads to a covalent cross-linking of fibrin fibrils at the end of the clotting cascade and supports platelet adhesion to the damaged sub-endothelium with the result of a mechanically stable clot.Symptoms of FXIII deficiencies vary within a broad spectrum from superficial skin bleeding episodes to severe, sometimes life threatening hemorrhage, requiring prophylactic or therapeutic

A 7-day-old neonate was admitted to our neonatal ward for umbilical stump bleeding. His medical history included hyperbilirubinaemia due to cephalic haematoma. Only after the administration of fresh frozen plasma, the bleeding stopped, suggesting coagulation factor deficiency. Elaborate coagulation tests showed factor XIII-deficiency.

Factor (F) XIII deficiency is a congenital rare bleeding disorder (RBD), with an estimated prevalence of 1 in 1 to 2 million individuals, and more than 1,200 patients have been diagnosed to date. In newborns, umbilical cord bleeding is typical, and later in life during trauma, surgery and even spontaneously prolonged bleeds, reproduction, and delivery complications occur frequently without appropriate replacement therapy. Also, an acquired form of FXIII deficiency may occur via massive bleeds or neutralizing antibodies. In the inherited form of FXIII deficiency, prophylaxis with FXIII concentr

Factor XIII (FXIII) is an essential coagulation factor that stabilizes fibrin clots and allows the clot to resist fibrinolysis. Inherited or acquired FXIII deficiency is a severe bleeding disorder with manifestations that can include fatal intracranial hemorrhage. Accurate FXIII laboratory testing is necessary for diagnosis, subtyping, and treatment monitoring. The recommended first-line test is FXIII activity, most commonly performed by commercial ammonia release assays. In these assays, it is important to perform a plasma blank measurement to correct for FXIII-independent ammonia production,

INTRODUCTION: Essential renal bleeding is rare and lacks standardized treatment; organ-preserving options are critical in older patients with impaired renal function.
CASE PRESENTATION: A woman in her early 80s with atrial fibrillation treated with edoxaban, chronic heart failure, and advanced chronic kidney disease presented with gross hematuria and bladder tamponade. Bleeding was localized to the right renal pelvis and ureter, with no tumor, urolithiasis, vascular malformation, or glomerular disease; essential renal bleeding was diagnosed. Hematuria persisted despite edoxaban discontinuatio

Hemostatic disorders are significantly associated with morbidity and mortality. Hence, the examination of coagulation abnormalities is a cornerstone of prevention and therapy. This meta-analysis aimed to determine the genotype pattern of Factor V (FV) and XIII (FXIII) abnormalities in the Iranian population. Methods The search strategy was conducted in electronic databases including Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, SID, ProQuest, and Magiran, covering the period from May 10,1990, to May 10, 2019, following the PRISMA principles. Studies of various designs, including cross-sectional, cohort, expe

Severe acute inflammation in chronic inflammatory bowel disease is associated with large wound areas and ulcerations that show spontaneous hemorrhage or marked friability. Therefore, an enormous potential of hemostasis and wound healing is required. Coagulation studies demonstrate a deficiency of factor XIII that is important for both clot formation and wound healing. Consequently, the substitution of factor XIII may be beneficial; the first case reports present favorable clinical results. In a prospective pilot study, we treated 12 patients with therapy-resistant ulcerative colitis. The colit

BACKGROUND: Health care officials and legislators need accurate data on prevalence and numbers of individuals with bleeding disorders in order to plan and allot their budgets; the manufacturers of coagulation factors also need these data to estimate the amount of factors required to prevent scarcity of these products.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We surveyed the prevalence of haemophilia A, haemophilia B, von Willebrand's disease and rare bleeding disorders in North-Eastern Iran. The survey was done in the period from September 2009 to March 2011. Information was collected from the medical records

Factor XIII (FXIII), a plasma transglutaminase, is a coagulation factor that plays a crucial role in blood clotting and patient blood management. The studies have demonstrated that FXIII targets a wide range of additional substrates that have an important role in hemostasis, especially in posttraumatic patients, patients undergoing surgery or obstetrics, being involved in wound healing and tissue repair. Morover, FXIII deficiency has also been described and an extensive research has shown that FXIII deficiency is a rare coagulopathy that leads to longer bleeding time, perioperative and postope

BACKGROUND: Congenital factor XIII (FXIII) deficiency is a rare coagulation disorder characterized by muscular or mucocutaneous bleeding with life-threatening intracranial hemorrhages (ICHs), especially in cases with severe disease. The best treatment is the use of prophylactic plasma-derived or recombinant FXIII (rFXIII). Few data on the use of rFXIII in the real-world scenario are available. The main goal of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of catridecacog (NovoThirteen®) in a population of patients with FXIII deficiency. Other objectives were to compare the different pharmac

INTRODUCTION: Snake bites tend to cause a high mortality in those who develop coagulopathy. However, there is very limited literature on clotting factor assays in these patients, especially in the presence of clinical bleeding. The aim was to assess the coagulation profile and individual coagulation factors in patients with hematotoxic snake bites.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective observational study of clotting factor levels in victims of snake bites with hematotoxicity admitted to a single hospital in south India for 12 months. In 43 individuals who fulfilled the criteria, we m

BACKGROUND: Severe traumatic bleeding depletes coagulation factor XIII (FXIII) and fibrinogen. However, the role of FXIII level in bleeding-related outcomes is unknown.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association between FXIII levels at hospital arrival and critical administration threshold (≥3 red blood cell units in 1 hour within the first 24 hours), bleeding-related outcomes, death, and baseline characteristics.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in severely injured adult patients (Injury Severity Score of ≥22 or ≥2 red blood cell units transfused in 24 hours) admitted to a l

Fibrin clot retraction (FCR) and collagen gel retraction (CGR) were studied in patients with inherited platelet defects, i.e. in Glanzmann's thrombasthenia, Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome, May-Hegglin anomaly, giant platelet syndrome, as well as in patients with von Willebrand disease and factor XIII deficiency. FCR was abnormal only in thrombasthenia, while CGR was found to be reduced in 2 patients with Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome and in 4 out of 5 cases with von Willebrand disease. Both FCR and CGR were normal in May-Hegglin anomaly, giant platelet syndrome and severe factor XIII deficiency. In non

Acquired factor XIII (FXIII) deficiency is a rare but life-threatening cause of hemorrhagic diseases. We report a case of a patient presenting with life-threatening bleeding with normal routine coagulation tests. The diagnosis was confirmed by a specific FXIII activity assay. The subsequent absence of ANA delayed the definitive diagnosis, which was ultimately established as ANA-negative systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) based on comprehensive clinical criteria and multisystem involvement. This case presented a profound diagnostic dilemma, requiring not only the identification of a rare acquir
