Building leadership capacity through coaching: A pilot professional development initiative for nurse faculty.

Leadership development remains a critical need for emerging nurse leaders as academic and health care environments become increasingly complex and resource constrained. Nursing faculty are frequently expected to assume leadership roles with limited formal preparation or structured support. In response, a pilot coaching-based professional development program was designed and implemented with early-career nurse faculty in a single academic setting. The Advancing Collegiate Coaching for Excellence in Leadership (ACCEL) program combined individualized coaching with structured cohort-based learning

Mastery learning improves simulated central venous catheter insertion by emergency medicine teaching faculty.

OBJECTIVES: Routine competency assessments of procedure skills, such as central venous catheter (CVC) insertion, do not occur beyond residency training. Evidence suggests variable, suboptimal attending physician procedure skills. Our study aimed to assess CVC insertion skill by academic emergency physicians, determine whether a simulation-based mastery learning (SBML) intervention improves performance and investigate for variables that predict competence. METHODS: This is a pretest-posttest study that evaluated simulated CVC insertion by emergency medicine (EM) faculty physicians. We assessed

Multi-Institutional Data for Faculty Well-Being Improvements Within and Across Medical Schools.

IMPORTANCE: Burnout, engagement, and satisfaction vary in prevalence and correlate with organizational performance in US medical colleges. Large-scale improvements have been elusive. OBJECTIVE: To quantify rates of well-being and its organizational correlates so to help identify opportunities for shared learning and focus well-being interventions across and within medical schools. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this cross-sectional study, 28 US medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education were surveyed from January 26, 2021, through June 3, 2024. Incentivizing Faculty and Promoting Engagement in General Surgery Residency Entrustable Professional Activities Assessments.

OBJECTIVE: The American Board of Surgery (ABS) implemented Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) to facilitate transition to competency-based resident assessments in July 2023. To improve faculty engagement, our institution established an intervention with a required target of less than 25% expired faculty EPA assessments for the 2024 to 2025 academic year (AY) to qualify for a shortened end-of-rotation resident evaluation form. DESIGN: A retrospective review of de-identified institutional EPA data for the AYs 2023 to 2024, preintervention, and 2024 to 2025, postintervention, obtained fr

Reimagining Dental Education: Consensus Recommendations for Strengthening Faculty Pathways and Academic Career Success.

BACKGROUND: Since the beginning of the 21st century, national reports have warned that dental education is not recruiting and retaining enough oral health faculty, even as student bodies grow and become more diverse and the professions increase the emphasis on oral health's intersection with overall health. The faculty who prepare future clinicians and scientists are in short supply, and this shortage compromises the quality of dental education and ultimately impacts the quality of care delivered to our communities. OBJECTIVE: To develop consensus recommendations to increase and sustain denta

Burnout Factors in Neurology: A Survey Assessing Key Factors Among US Academic Faculty.

OBJECTIVES: Burnout can impair clinical judgment and is prevalent across all medical subspecialties. Neurology, in particular, is associated with high rates of burnout and low satisfaction with work-life balance. METHODS: A standardized survey using the abbreviated Maslach Burnout Inventory was administered from December 2020 to March 2022. Faculty from 19 academic neurology departments in the United States participated. Demographic, career, compensation, equity, domestic circumstances, parental leave, and burnout data were collected as part of the Women in Neurology Collaborative Study. Stat

Mastery Learning Improves Simulated Distal Radius Fracture Management by Emergency Medicine Teaching Faculty.

BACKGROUND: Emergency medicine (EM) physicians must be competent in managing distal radius fractures, yet training gaps exist. This study evaluated academic EM physician proficiency in managing a simulated distal radius fracture and the impact of a simulation-based mastery learning (SBML) intervention. METHODS: We conducted a pretest-posttest study of board-certified or board-eligible EM physicians at a university-based training hospital between August and December 2023. Four trained facilitators assessed participants on distal radius fracture management using a task trainer and a 41-item che

Exploring Cross-Cultural and Interprofessional Faculty Development: Perspectives from Vietnamese Health Professions Educators.

PURPOSE: Faculty development (FD) is a strategic priority in health professions education, yet its impact in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is often limited by contextual and cultural factors. This study explored how Vietnamese health professions faculty engaged with and applied learning from a cross-cultural, interprofessional FD certificate program. METHOD: Using a qualitative approach informed by a constructivist paradigm, the authors conducted semistructured interviews with 10 faculty from a single academic institution in Vietnam who completed a nine-month international FD progr

Faculty Uses and Perspectives on Generative AI: Experiences From Two UK Veterinary Schools.

The relatively recent emergence of generative AI (GenAI) tools and their potential to influence many aspects of faculty and student experiences requires rapid insight into these tools' current uses, perceived challenges, and opportunities. A survey-based study was carried out with faculty at two UK veterinary schools to gain insight into current usage rates, confidence, concerns, and suggestions for both faculty development and curriculum in relation to GenAI. A total of 121 surveys were completed (∼20% response rate). Likert scale items were statistically analyzed and free-text data were code

Lymphedema Surgical Education and Faculty Demographics in United States Plastic Surgery Residency Programs.

BACKGROUND: Recent advancements in supermicrosurgery and promising preliminary outcomes have led to a surge in physiologic lymphedema surgery. This study is the first to evaluate lymphedema surgical education among U.S. plastic surgery residency programs, along with the background and experience of plastic surgeons subspecializing in the field. METHODS: Cross-sectional evaluation of 103 accredited U.S. plastic surgery residency programs was performed in January 2023. Web-based searches of program curricula, faculty profiles, and main institutional pages indicated whether a program provided no

Reflections on work-life integration post-pandemic: A perspective from pharmacy practice faculty.

INTRODUCTION: The effects of COVID-19 will have a lasting impact on how work is conducted moving forward. Prior to the pandemic, work-life integration and well-being were priorities for many organizations, including pharmacy. The disruption associated with the COVID-19 pandemic pushed businesses and organizations worldwide into an era of agility and flexibility previously unknown to the majority of workplaces. PERSPECTIVE: Increased remote work has presented both increased challenges (e.g., engagement) and opportunities (e.g., productivity). After a year of experience, this shift in the natur

Three Years of X + Y Scheduling: Longitudinal Assessment of Resident and Faculty Perceptions.

OBJECTIVE: Five pediatric residency programs implemented true X + Y scheduling in 2018 where residents have continuity clinic in "blocks" rather than half-day per week experiences. We report the impact X + Y scheduling has on pediatric resident and faculty perceptions of patient care and other educational experiences over a 3-year timeframe. METHODS: Electronic surveys were sent to residents and faculty of the participating programs prior to implementing X + Y scheduling and annually thereafter (2018-2021). Survey questions measured resident and faculty perception of continuity clinic schedul
