Quantitative interpretation and modeling of continuous nonprotein respiratory quotients.

The respiratory exchange ratio (RER), which is the ratio of total carbon dioxide produced over total oxygen consumed, serves as a qualitative measure to determine the substrate usage of a particular organism on the whole body level. Quantification of RER by its direct conversion into %glucose- (%Gox) and %lipid oxidation (%Lox) at a given timepoint can be done by utilizing nonprotein respiratory quotient tables. These tables, however, are limited to specific increments, and intermediate RER values are not covered by these tables. RER data are mostly continuous, which requires faithful interpol

The lived experiences and perceptions of middle-aged adults in Dominica who have survived severe storms-a qualitative exploration.

INTRODUCTION: The Eastern Caribbean island of Dominica has experienced diverse negative effects from the North Atlantic hurricane season, including deadly storms like Hurricane Maria in 2017. Vulnerability is increased by geographic location, small island developing state (SIDS) status, and ecosystem characteristics. A variety of negative health effects including stress and anxiety are caused by powerful storms. The perspectives of middle-aged (the "sandwich generation") survivors in this post-storm milieu are understudied. METHODS: This phenomenological qualitative study describes the percep

Background Diabetes-related misinformation adversely affects treatment adherence, health-seeking behaviour and disease outcomes among individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Quinary prevention aims to prevent harm arising from the spread of inaccurate health information by promoting evidence-based communication and countering misconceptions. However, evidence regarding diabetes-related misinformation and Quinary prevention strategies in community settings remains limited. The study was mainly aimed at exploring misinformation related to T2DM management and its sources and exploring t

Improving uptake of hepatitis B and hepatitis C testing in South Asian migrants in community and faith settings using educational interventions-A prospective descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic viral hepatitis (CVH) is a leading contributor to the UK liver disease epidemic, with global migration from high prevalence areas (e.g., South Asia). Despite international guidance for testing high-risk groups in line with elimination targets, there is no consensus on how to achieve this. The objectives of this study were to assess the following: (1) the feasibility of recruiting South Asian migrants to view an educational film on CVH, (2) the effectiveness of the film in promoting testing and increasing knowledge of CVH, and (3) the methodological issues relevant to scale-

FuChi is a cell cycle biosensor for tracking cell cycle dynamics during avian development.

The ability to monitor the proliferative status of live cells both in vitro and in vivo over time has revolutionised our understanding of development, growth and disease. This was first made possible by fluorescent ubiquitination-based cell cycle indicator (Fucci) technology, which distinguishes specific cell cycle phases through the reciprocal degradation of fluorescently tagged, truncated forms of human CDT1 and GMNN proteins. Fucci genetic systems have been successfully implemented in transgenic mice, zebrafish, and axolotls. To date, no viable, stably expressing Fucci line has been develop

Exploring preferences to accessing sexual and reproductive health services: A qualitative study of adolescents' and service provider perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Understanding what adolescents want and how preferences are likely to vary among different groups is important to make the healthcare system responsive to the needs of adolescents and to maximize service utilization. Despite this, evidence is scarce in this aspect. Therefore, this study aimed to explore preferences for accessing Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) services from the perspective of adolescents and health care providers in the South Ethiopia Regional State. METHODS: A phenomenological qualitative study was conducted from September 04 to October 15, 2023. Seven Focus

How much healthcare is wasted? A cross-sectional study of outpatient overprovision in private-for-profit and faith-based health facilities in Tanzania.

Overprovision-healthcare whose harm exceeds its benefit-is of increasing concern in low- and middle-income countries, where the growth of the private-for-profit sector may amplify incentives for providing unnecessary care, and achieving universal health coverage will require efficient resource use. Measurement of overprovision has conceptual and practical challenges. We present a framework to conceptualize and measure overprovision, comparing for-profit and not-for-profit private outpatient facilities across 18 of mainland Tanzania's 22 regions. We developed a novel conceptualization of three

Frames of dying: a qualitative study of end-of-life experiences of terminal Arab patients.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care (PC) at the end of life (EOL) seeks to alleviate suffering and enhance dignity and quality of life, mostly for patients facing terminal illness. Yet within Israel's Arab population, cultural, religious and linguistic dynamics deeply shape the experience of illness, care preferences and trust in the healthcare system. Care provision often fails to address these sociocultural complexities. This study aims to explore and understand the views and attitudes of terminal Israeli Arab patients regarding PC, their dying experiences and the meanings they attach to them as sha

Availability and affordability of antimalarial and antibiotic medicines in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Availability and affordability of medicines are key determinants of universal health coverage, yet achieving them presents a major challenge especially in low-income countries. We here present an analysis of availability and prices of antimalarial and antibiotic medicines in public, faith-based and private health facilities in Malawi. Medicines are provided free of charge in the public health care system of Malawi. In contrast, facilities of the Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM) usually charge their patients for medicines, as do private for-profit facilities. METHODS:

Medicines availability for non-communicable diseases: the case for standardized monitoring.

BACKGROUND: In response to the global burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), the World Health Organization (WHO) has developed a Global Action Plan that includes a voluntary medicines target of 80% availability and affordability of essential medicines for the prevention and treatment of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and respiratory disease both in public and private health facilities. Reliable measures of medicines availability are needed to track progress towards meeting this target. The results of three studies measuring the availability of medicines for hypertension and diabetes con

General insights on obstacles to dog vaccination in Chad on community and institutional level.

Domestic dogs are responsible for 95% of all human rabies cases worldwide and continue to be the main reservoir for this fatal virus in African and Asian countries. Interrupting the spread of the disease in the domestic dog population is therefore necessary for long-term, sustainable rabies control. Chad has been recognized as a rabies-endemic country since 1961, but no national control strategy is in place to date and dog vaccination coverage is very low. This qualitative, descriptive study aims to describe the main barriers to dog vaccination on both the community and the institutional level

Medical assistance in dying (MAiD) in Canada: practical aspects for healthcare teams.

In this paper we document some of the practical aspects of implementing medical assistance in dying (MAiD) since it became legal in Canada in 2016. The percentage of annual deaths in Canada due to MAiD varies widely, ranging from less than 0.5% in some areas to over 5% in others. By the end of 2019, approximately 13,000 people had an assisted death in Canada (1.6% of all deaths). The average age is 73 years and the majority have cancer (64%), followed by end-stage organ failure (17%), and neurological disease (11%). The safeguards in Canadian law include having two witnesses sign the patient r

The Meiotic Spindle, Mechanisms of Chromosome Segregation and Aneuploidy in Aging Human Oocytes: An Update Review.

The meiotic spindle is essential for accurate chromosome segregation during oocyte maturation and fertilization, and its alteration might be considered a major contributor to age-related aneuploidy and reproductive failure. Spindle formation is inherently vulnerable to errors and contributes to the unusually high frequency of chromosome segregation defects observed in human eggs. Human oocytes are particularly prone to aneuploidy; the presence of an abnormal chromosome number, which represents one of the leading causes of infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, implantation failure, and congeni
