Families with children, many of whom are headed by a single mother, are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. Guided by Leininger's Culture Care Theory and the ethnonursing research method, the purpose of this study was to discover the care meanings and expressions for a group of 12 Appalachian mothers living with their children in an urban homeless shelter. Reflected in each mother's words and embedded within the 3 universal themes that emerged was the need to be treated with human dignity and respect. This need was seen as vital to the health and well being of these familie

This article explores the relationship between family history of breast cancer (FHBC) and health-related behavior and medical management, using a cross-sectional analysis of 685 women, based on self-report. The influence of FHBC on lifestyle (alcohol use, physical activity, weight and diet) and medical management decisions (screening for chronic diseases) was assessed using odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Adjustment for confounders was performed using unconditional logistic regression. Sixty five women (9.5%) reported relatives with breast cancer. Women with FHBC are more li

OBJECTIVES: This study examines whether state family planning expenditures and abortion funding for Medicaid-eligible women might reduce the number of low-birthweight babies, babies with late or no prenatal care, and premature births, as well as the rates of infant and neonatal mortality.
METHODS: Using a pooled time-series analysis from 1982 to 1988 with the 50 states as units of analysis, this study assessed the impact of family planning expenditures and abortion funding on several public health outcomes while controlling for other important variables and statistical problems inherent in po

The views of fathers of young families on health education were obtained using questionnaires issued through Maternity Health Care Clinics and Well-Baby Clinics. The present study is part of the Finnish Family Competence Study. The first phase of the study included 1,414 fathers whose wives were expecting their first baby. Of them, 1,279 returned a questionnaire. In the second phase, at week 28 of the wife's pregnancy, 1,123 fathers returned a questionnaire. A third questionnaire issued when the baby was born was completed by 1,134 fathers. A further questionnaire issued three months after the

The purpose of this study was to explore and describe "crack" cocaine use, health, family and social support in adult users. A nonprobability, convenience sample was used comprising 100 inpatients, 77 men and 23 women, from a drug treatment program. Gender differences, though not found in areas related to drug consumption, were found with respect to where and with whom subjects smoked, as well as perceptions of significant others. This initial, exploratory study should provide a foundation for future investigations concerning crack cocaine users.

The devastating effects of experiencing violence in childhood has been particularly difficult to assess among South Asians (SA) living in the U.S. due to a lack of race specific data. A cross-sectional quantitative study of 535 SA adult women living in the U.S. was conducted to better understand the relationship between childhood exposure to violence and health behaviors in adulthood. Measures included socio-demographics, exposure to violence as a child via witnessing parental violence, and experience of childhood violence, adult IPV, suicide ideation and attempt, and body esteem and subjectiv

BACKGROUND: Individuals with a family history of alcoholism (FH+) are at enhanced risk of developing alcohol or other substance use disorders relative to those with no family history (FH-). Alcoholics and FH+ subjects have greater interference scores on the Stroop color-word task, suggesting these impairments may be a component of the cognitive phenotype of at-risk individuals.
METHODS: In this study, we examined whole-brain activations in 24 FH+ and 28 FH- young adults performing the counting Stroop task, a variant of the Stroop task adapted for neuroimaging studies.
RESULTS: Across all sub

Evidence suggests that maternal health in pregnancy is associated with autism in the offspring. However, most diagnoses in pregnant women have not been examined, and the role of familial confounding remains unknown. Our cohort included all children born in Denmark between 1998 and 2015 (n = 1,131,899) and their parents. We fitted Cox proportional hazard regression models to estimate the likelihood of autism associated with each maternal prenatal ICD-10 diagnosis, accounting for disease chronicity and comorbidity, familial correlations and sociodemographic factors. We examined the evidence for

OBJECTIVES: Literature on this issue has shown a high prevalence of alcohol and other drug use in the prison population. Although many risk factors have been linked to this behavior in prison, it is not common to find research that analyses the influence of family/social contact in prison.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 2,709 inmates (2,484 men and 225 women) in 9 prisons in Spain, data was collected through self-report questionnaires, including information at socio-demographic level, family-social contact and use of alcohol and other drugs in the last month i

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate how 3 forms of housing instability relate to caregiver and child health among low-income renter households.
METHODS: Caregivers of children 0 to 48 months of age were interviewed in 5 urban medical centers from May 2009 to December 2015. Caregivers reported on the following: caregiver health, maternal depressive symptoms, child's health, lifetime hospitalizations, developmental risk, and 3 housing circumstances, which were categorized as being behind on rent in the past 12 months, multiple moves (≥ 2 in past 12 months), and child's lifetime history of homelessness. Alaska's Community Health Aides/Practitioners (CHA/Ps) are often the sole medical workers in their communities in rural Alaska, and are instrumental in providing healthcare services and education to otherwise underserved individuals. This qualitative study explored how CHA/Ps support healthy families. Six CHA/Ps from two rural communities in western Alaska were interviewed about their scope of practice, interactions with mothers, infants, families, and teens, relationship to other medical providers, and perceptions of their work. Using grounded theory, verbatim notes were analyzed in Dedoose s

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine the hypothesis that inexpensive and feasible healthy living practices in families, particularly in disadvantaged families, can promote the health of children.
METHODS: The dataset was obtained from the Taiwan Birth Cohort Study and comprises a nationally representative sample of 19,712 3-year-old children in Taiwan. The Child Healthy Living Practices in Families (CHLPF) Index, which rates various items of personal hygiene, vegetable and fruit consumption, physical activity, time spent viewing television, and exposure to smoking, was created, an

The recent European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) guidelines for the management of familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) succinctly reiterate the under-diagnosis and poor management of this common genetic disorder, which is associated with greatly increased mortality from coronary heart disease (CHD), especially in young people. The prevalence of FH is thought to be between 1/500 and 1/200, and thus in Europe 1.8-4.5 million individuals have FH. In most European countries including the UK, fewer than 15% of cases have been identified to date, amounting to over 100,000 undiagnosed cases in the UK

In research on 167 post-hospitalized older people, thirty individuals were described by their families as being senile. In comparisons of the behaviorally impaired with those who have only a physical condition, it was found that the behaviorally impaired were significantly more likely to be placed in a nursing home than were those with serious physical impairment. In this sub-group, the family also was much more likely to seek-out health professionals for advice in the disposition of the patient, although mental health professionals were rarely consulted. Through a case study analysis, we anal

Health literacy (HL) is essential to understanding health information and achieving health goals. Unfortunately, limited information is available on how parent HL impact child health outcomes. This is critical to understand in areas of the world where access to healthcare services is limited or unavailable. Thus, the purpose of this study was to assess the moderating influence of access to care on the relationship between parent HL and child health outcomes in Mexico. Using a geographically stratified convenience sample survey design, we gathered a sample of 373 parent-child dyads throughout M
