Pancreatitis, panniculitis and polyarthritis syndrome (PPP syndrome) is a clinical syndrome with cutaneous panniculitis and polyarthritis on the basis of pancreatic diseases, which is quite rare. The occurrence of arthrosis and skin lesions is not completely synchronous with pancreatic diseases, so it is often missed or misdiagnosed due to the lack of obvious abdominal signs, with severe sequelae and high mortality. In this article, we report a case of PPP syndrome with severe rare osseous complications caused by chronic pancreatitis.

Therapeutic hypothermia (head or whole-body cooling) improves survival and neurodevelopmental outcome in term newborns with moderate-to-severe encephalopathy. Hypothermia treatment is well tolerated; the most common side effect is thrombocytopenia. In about 1% of infants, focal subcutaneous fat necrosis has been reported. We describe a case of clinically unsuspected massive visceral fat necrosis in a term infant with Apgar score 0 at 1 min ("resuscitated apparently stillborn" infant) who was treated with therapeutic hypothermia for 72 h and expired on the 25th day of life following a neonatal

OBJECTIVE: Subcutaneous fat necrosis (SCFN) is a rare form of panniculitis in infants that generally occurs following birth trauma, meconium aspiration, or therapeutic cooling. Severe hypercalcaemia occurs in a subset of patients, but data on its presentation, management and outcomes are limited. This report details the clinical course and complications of infants treated for severe hypercalcaemia (peak serum calcium ≥3.0 mmol/L) due to SCFN.
DESIGN: Chart review of all infants with SCFN seen at a single paediatric centre over a 13-year period.
PATIENTS: Seven infants with SCFN developed sev

A 28-year-old, female umbrella cockatoo (Cacatua alba) was evaluated because of lethargy, anorexia, regurgitation, and coelomic swelling of 6 month's duration, which corresponded to cessation of egg laying. Radiographs and ultrasound examination demonstrated extensive deposits of coelomic fat and an enlarged oviduct. Exploratory celiotomy demonstrated copious amounts of firm, nodular fat completely surrounding the gastrointestinal tract, resulting in extensive chronic adhesions between intestinal loops. Free yolk was present in the cranial left coelom, yolk coelomitis was diagnosed, and a salp

Whole-body cooling, or therapeutic hypothermia, is increasingly becoming the standard of treatment for moderate to severe neonatal encephalopathy because it reduces neurodevelopmental disabilities and mortality in term neonates. Subcutaneous fat necrosis (SCFN) of the newborn has been identified as a potential side effect of birth asphyxia. In recent literature, there has been an increase in SCFN in infants who received whole-body cooling in treatment of neonatal encephalopathy. Subcutaneous fat necrosis is a rare and self-limiting disorder of the adipose tissue that usually occurs in full-ter

We report a case of fatal pancreatitis heralded by the presence of cutaneous panniculitis without abdominal pain or other stigmata of the disease. Although cutaneous fat necrosis has been associated with pancreatitis, it is unusual as the presenting complaint of this relatively common disease. In vitro evidence suggests that human pancreatic amylase or lipase alone is not responsible for the observed panniculitis.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SCFN) is a rare panniculitis that typically presents within the first few weeks of life. We report a unique case of SCFN diagnosed as early as day three of life in a large-for-gestational-age neonate born to a diabetic mother. Notably, the lesion exhibited a central purpuric area with an irregular, serrated erythematous border, which was clearly visualized using dermoscopy. Histological confirmation was limited due to sampling constraints, but the clinical features and evolution were consistent with SCFN. This case highlights the utility of early derma

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn is a self-limited disorder predominantly affecting full-term and post-term neonates during the first 6 weeks after birth. Subcutaneous fat necrosis can be focal or multifocal and affect one or both sides with a predilection for areas of pressure in certain anatomical areas. Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn is associated with perinatal asphyxia and other neonatal and maternal risk factors. Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn presents as a self-limited area of dermal edema followed by indurated subcutaneous plaques, or nontender and mobile no

Subcutaneous fat necrosis (SFN) in the newborn is a form of panniculitis which presents with erythematous nodules and indurated plaques. Severe life-threatening hypercalcaemia can occur as a late complication. A 2-month-old girl presented with severe hypercalcaemia and acute renal injury as a complication of SFN. She was admitted to hospital with the chief complaint of failure to thrive. She had a history of therapeutic hypothermia. After successful treatment of the hypercalcaemia with bisphosphonates, the acute renal injury recovered spontaneously. In neonates with SFN, acute renal injury is

A 5-day-old boy presented with cellulitis-like, fluctuant lesions since birth. Clinically, subcutaneous fat necrosis was suspected, but an infective lesion could not be excluded. By performing a fine-needle aspiration biopsy, a diagnosis was established within minutes.

OBJECTIVES: Lymphocytic infiltrates in the subcutaneous adipose tissue, often accompanied by fat necrosis, are typically seen in benign panniculitis. Diagnostic considerations include subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma and cutaneous γδ T-cell lymphoma, whereas a primary subcutaneous B-cell lymphoma in this setting has not been previously described.
METHODS: We report the case of a 72-year-old woman with multiple deep cutaneous nodules on the trunk and upper extremities.
RESULTS: During 3 years of clinical follow-up, new skin nodules developed, while existing lesions remained stab

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SCFN) is a rare, benign, and self-limiting panniculitis of neonates that presents in the first few weeks of life and is most commonly associated with birth asphyxia and meconium aspiration. There have been few case reports of SCFN following therapeutic hypothermia. With the increasing use of therapeutic whole-body hypothermia, SCFN may become more prevalent. The differential diagnosis of SCFN can be broad, and clinicopathologic correlation is essential to make the correct and timely diagnosis. Clinicians should be aware of this rare disease and its pot

BACKGROUND: Subcutaneous fat necrosis (SCFN) of the newborn is a form of panniculitis that affects full-term neonates who often have suffered either birth asphyxia or hypothermia. The induction of hypothermia in newborns is becoming frequently used to reduce the neurologic sequelae associated with birth asphyxia. The risk of SCFN in neonates undergoing this therapy is unknown. Observation We describe a neonate who developed an abscess-like presentation of SCFN and subsequent asymptomatic hypercalcemia after undergoing whole-body cooling for hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.
CONCLUSIONS: Hypoth

Acute polyarthritis can occur in non-rheumatic systemic illnesses, presenting a diagnostic dilemma. We present an extremely rare case presenting as acute polyarthritis, panniculitis and medullary fat necrosis with underlying pancreatic pathology. This case report describes a young woman presenting with panniculits, pancreatic tumour, polyarthritis and intra-osseus fat necrosis with a fatal outcome. The medical fraternity needs to be aware of this potentially fatal albeit rare musculoskeletal complication secondary to a pancreatic pathology.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SFNN) is an uncommon self-limiting panniculitis. Lesions may be fluctuant and spontaneously drain. Here we report a technique to rapidly confirm the diagnosis of SFNN when fluctuance exists via a touch preparation that demonstrates the characteristic histologic features of this condition. The material can be collected by fine needle aspirate, from draining fluctuant lesions, or if biopsy if performed.

BACKGROUND: Intraabdominal fat necrosis of the retroperitoneum, mesenthery and omentum is a frequent complication of acute pancreatitis. Very rarely, during the disease multiple aseptic subcutaneous fat necrosis, polyarthritis, polyserositis, vasculitis, subcutaneous nodi and eosinophylia, isolated or in combination, may appear. They are known as "pancreatic disease syndrome".
CASE REPORT: We presented a female patient, 43-year-old, in whom in the course of acute interstitial biliary pancreatitis had occur red multiple localized aseptic necrosis of subcutaneous fat tissue of extremities appea

The panniculitides comprise a group of heterogeneous inflammatory diseases that involve the subcutaneous fat. Histopathologic study is required for the specific diagnosis of these disorders, because different panniculitides usually show the same clinical appearance, which consists of erythematous nodules on the lower extremities. The histopathologic study of panniculitis is difficult, however, because of an inadequate clinicopathologic correlation and the changing evolutive nature of the lesions. Some cutaneous lymphomas may simulate panniculitis, both from clinical and histopathologic points

A female infant was delivered at term with complications of severe meconium aspiration and birth asphyxia. Surface cooling was performed in the first 24 hours as part of the management of her birth asphyxia. Woody erythema was noted at 24 hours, followed by the formation of red-purple nodules on the 6th day. Clinical findings in the first 24 hours were suggestive of cold panniculitis. However, clinical and histological findings progressed to be in keeping with the diagnosis of subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SCFN). Furthermore, the immediate postnatal period was complicated by pain r

AIMS: We performed a review of the clinical, mammographic and sonographic findings of fat necrosis in a group of patients who presented with a lump in the breast. We aimed to show that, in the light of a non-specific combination of findings, an ultrasound-guided core-biopsy (CB) is a safe, quick and useful test to confirm the diagnosis. The procedure makes it possible to reassure the patient of the true identity of the lesion, thus avoiding the need for surgical excision or follow-up investigations.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We undertook a retrospective review of the clinical presentation, imagi
