Young children have the highest victimization rates of physical abuse in their first year of life, making up nearly half of all child abuse-related fatalities. More effective prevention is needed to reduce child victimization, yet many risk reduction models rely on problematic inclusion criteria, only intervene after maltreatment has occurred, or focus only on mothers. More proactive prevention models that promote positive parenting practices early in the transition to parenthood could be key to reducing child maltreatment. The current study sought to assess how both mothers' and fathers' psyc

Turn-taking, the coordinated exchange of communicative signals between infants and caregivers, is vital for child communicative development. While it is considered a human universal, most research has focused on mother-infant dyads. Given fathers' increasing caregiving involvement, understanding their contribution to early communication is essential. Thus, we have examined early infant-father turn-taking and the role of fathers' mentalizing abilities, which may support turn prediction, and paternal involvement, as it may shape the frequency and quality of exchanges. We observed 39 father-infan

The current study examined two family process predictors of parent-reported child sleep problems at 4.5 years in an adoption sample: marital hostility and hostile parenting. Participants were 361 linked triads of birth parents, adoptive parents, and adopted children. We examined direct and indirect pathways from marital hostility to child sleep problems via hostile parenting. Mothers' marital hostility at 9 months was associated with child sleep problems at 4.5 years. Fathers' marital hostility at 9 months evidenced an indirect effect on child sleep problems at 4.5 years via fathers' hostile p

Mono- and bi-allelic mutations in the low-density lipoprotein receptor related protein 5 (LRP5) may cause osteopetrosis, autosomal dominant and recessive exudative vitreoretinopathy, juvenile osteoporosis, or persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV). We report on a child affected with PHPV and carrying compound mutations. The father carried the splice mutation and suffered from severe bone fragility since childhood. The mother carried the missense mutation without any clinical manifestations. The genetic diagnosis of their child allowed for appropriate treatment in the father and for th

This 20-year prospective study examined verbal aggression and intense conflict within the family of origin and between adolescents and their close friends as predictors of future verbal aggression in adult romantic relationships. A diverse community sample of 154 individuals was assessed repeatedly from age 13 to 34 years using self-, parent, peer, and romantic partner reports. As hypothesized, verbal aggression in adult romantic relationships was best predicted by both paternal verbal aggression toward mothers and by intense conflict within adolescent close friendships, with each factor contr

The present research examined parents' perspectives of co-parenting and supportive and hostile parenting as predictors of youth resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were 47 mother/father dyads who had at least one K-12 child (Mage = 11.40, SD = 3.92). Mothers and fathers each completed an online survey that measured parenting, co-parenting, and youth resilience during the pandemic. Data were analyzed using the actor-partner interdependence model. Results revealed a positive relationship between mother supportiveness and perceived youth resilience; in contrast, increased father

PURPOSE: Little is known about fatherhood in middle adolescence. To better understand their sexual health needs, we describe relationship characteristics, perception of masculinity, and associated sexually transmitted infection (STI) risk behaviors in a community-based sample of urban middle adolescent boys who have fathered a child or been involved with a pregnancy.
METHODS: We used venue-based sampling to recruit 339 boys (aged 14-17 years) in neighborhoods with high STI prevalence. We administered a brief survey on sexual relationship and pregnancy history, STI risk, juvenile justice invol

Disclosure of child sexual abuse can be traumatic for nonoffending parents. Research has shown its impact on mothers' mental health, which includes heightened psychological distress, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Very little is known, however, about its impact on their physical health or on fathers' health. The self-perceived mental and physical health of nonoffending parents after child sexual abuse disclosure was compared to determine gender-related differences in this regard. Interviews were conducted with 109 mothers and 43 fathers of 6- to 13-year-old sexually abused chi

BACKGROUND: Parents of children with fragile X syndrome (FXS) experience elevated levels of parenting stress due to the challenges associated with raising a child with significant disabilities. Biological mothers of children with FXS are at an increased genetic risk for experiencing mental health challenges. Parental mental health challenges and stress are often associated with reduced marital cohesion and satisfaction, which may spill over and negatively affect the parent-child relationship for both mothers and fathers.
AIM: The current study examined relationships among characteristics of p

During public health crises, family members often experience heightened health-related worry. However, little is known about how the transactional processes of such worry operate within family systems involving mother, father, and their child. To address this gap, we conducted a six-wave longitudinal survey of 303 families in China. Each month, mothers (Mage = 33.35 years) and fathers (Mage = 34.97 years) of children (Mage = 3.98 years, age range 2-7 years, 55.6% male) reported their own and their perceptions of their child's COVID-19-related health worries (e.g., infection concerns). I offer a psychoanalytic interpretation of The Phantom of the Opera as an allegory of father-daughter incest and psychological recovery. Christine Daaé's journey illustrates the internal dynamics of trauma-denial, dissociation, and identification with the abuser-while her final confrontation with the Phantom symbolizes the reclamation of agency and selfhood. Drawing on symbolic actions such as unmasking and descent into the unconscious, the analysis explores how narrative, performance, and relational support can reflect the nonlinear process of healing. Ultimately, Christine's transformation f

The secure base construct represents one of attachment theory's most important contributions to our understanding of parent-child relationships and child development. The present study represents the first examination of how parents' self-reported attachment styles relate to parental secure base provision and adolescent (mean age = 16.6 years, SE = .59) secure base use during an observed parent-adolescent interaction. Further, the present study is the first to examine how fathers', as well as mothers', attachment styles relate to observed behavior in a parent-child interaction. At the bivariat

BACKGROUND: Fathers play meaningful and often under-recognised roles in supporting early child development (ECD) but evidence from crisis-affected settings is limited. In Lebanon, ongoing economic and social instability places pressure on the conditions that support children's development, emphasising the value of examining caregiving practices that promote ECD. We examined whether paternal engagement (PE) in caregiving relates to children's developmental outcomes and whether these relationships vary by socioeconomic context.
METHODS: We used cross-sectional data from the 2023 Lebanon Micronu

Qualitative studies have indicated that maternal gatekeeping has a significant effect on low-income, unmarried, nonresident fathers' involvement with children. Very few quantitative studies of maternal gatekeeping have been conducted with these fathers. The present study addresses this gap using a community sample of 649 low-income, unmarried, nonresident (n = 548), and coresident (n = 101) fathers. Fathers' perceptions of mothers' restrictive gatekeeping and encouragement were examined in relation to fathers' responsibility for and emotional support of children from infancy through adolescenc

Subjective Experiences of First-Time Fathers: A Systematic Overview Considering Psychoanalytic Perspectives The paper presents a systematic literature review that evaluates international qualitative studies (n = 20) from the last decade on the subjective experience of first-time fatherhood. Through thematic analysis, seven thematic clusters were identified: ambivalent feelings in the transition to fatherhood, changing paternal identity and self-image, social pressure and role expectations, emotional self-regulation and coping, gaps in care and information, attachment to the child, and relation

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is one of the most prevalent childhood mental health disorders and is extremely affected by family factors. However, limited studies have addressed the issue from the perspective of family systems. The current study examines the associations between multilevel family factors (i.e., family cohesion/ adaptability at system level, mother-child and father-child attachment at a dyadic level, and child self-esteem at an individual level) and emotional and behavioral problems among children with ODD in China. The participants were 256 Chinese children with ODD and

Extrapolating results from studies of lesbians' children to gays' children and assertions of "no risk to children as a result of growing up in a family with 1 or more gay parents" are questioned. A review of 9 studies gave evidence that gays' children were (a) more apt to adopt homosexual interests and activities, (b) more apt to report sexual confusion, (c) more apt to be socially disturbed, (d) more apt to abuse substances, (e) less apt to get married, (f) more apt to have difficulty in attachment and loving relationships, (g) less religious and more unconventionally religious, (h) more apt

OBJECTIVE: To investigate associations between fathers' postpartum depression and whether their children lived with them at 3 subsequent time points.
METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of a national US cohort of mostly nonmarital births. Paternal depression was assessed when the child was age 1 and fathers' co-residence was assessed when their children were ages 3, 5, and 9. We estimated unadjusted and adjusted logistic regression models of associations between paternal depression in the postpartum year and father's subsequent co-residence with the child.
RESULTS: Among 1691 new fath

The objective of this research is to compare psychological resilience in Chinese firstborn and only children and its relation to perceived parenting styles and child abuse. The results found that total psychological resilience score, and resilience subscales such as emotion control and goal focus mean scores of the firstborn child was significantly lower compared to the only child (Ps<0.05). The total psychological resilience scores of both male and female in firstborn children was significantly lower, when compared respectively to only children (Ps<0.01).
