Omega-3 fatty acid for the treatment and remission of Crohn's disease.

This integrative literature review focused on the use of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation for the treatment of Crohn's disease (CD). A systematic review of studies investigating the use of omega-3 in individuals with CD was performed. OVID MEDLINE, the Cochrane Database, and CINAHL were searched for pertinent research. Experiments were limited to double-blind placebo controlled trials. Five studies observing CD relapse rates and three studies examining biochemical changes were evaluated. The studies reviewed show contradicting information regarding the efficacy of omega-3 for CD. While some

Where to find omega-3 fatty acids and how feeding animals with diet enriched in omega-3 fatty acids to increase nutritional value of derived products for human: what is actually useful ?

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids have two major field of interest. The first lies in their quantitative abundance and their role in the development and maintenance of the brain. The second is their role in the prevention of different pathologies, mainly the cardiovascular diseases, and more lately some psychiatric disorders, from stress to depression and dementia. Thus, dietary omega-3 fatty acids are very important to ensure brain structure and function, more specifically during development and aging. However, concerning essential alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), most occidental diets contain a

Omega-3 fatty acids and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: Evidence of efficacy and mechanism of action.

For many years it has been known that high doses of long chain omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial in the treatment of hypertriglyceridaemia. Over the last three decades, there has also been a wealth of in vitro and in vivo data that has accumulated to suggest that long chain omega-3 fatty acid treatment might be beneficial to decrease liver triacylglycerol. Several biological mechanisms have been identified that support this hypothesis; notably, it has been shown that long chain omega-3 fatty acids have a beneficial effect: a) on bioactive metabolites involved in inflammatory pathways, and b)

Emerging Mechanisms of Cardiovascular Protection for the Omega-3 Fatty Acid Eicosapentaenoic Acid.

Patients with well-controlled LDL (low-density lipoprotein) levels still have residual cardiovascular risk associated with elevated triglycerides. Epidemiological studies have shown that elevated fasting triglyceride levels associate independently with incident cardiovascular events, and abundant recent human genetic data support the causality of TGRLs (triglyceride-rich lipoproteins) in atherothrombosis. Omega-3 fatty acids, such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), lower blood triglyceride concentrations but likely exert additional atheroprotective properties at hig

Targeting mitochondrial apoptosis in septic lung injury: protective potential of omega-3 fatty acids.

Acute lung injury secondary to sepsis remains a major problem in critical patients. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced lung injury is characterized by inflammatory infiltration, oxidative stress, and extensive apoptosis, particularly via the mitochondrial pathway. Omega-3 (OM3) polyunsaturated fatty acids have been proposed as promising modulators of inflammation and oxidative damage. However, their role in regulating mitochondria-mediated apoptosis in sepsis remains underexplored. Thirty-two female Wistar albino rats were randomized into four groups: Control, LPS (5 mg/kg, i.p. 3th), LPS-OM3 (4

Omega-3 fatty acids and bioactives in aqueous-extracted oils from seven edible insects.

Globally, there is urgent search and research interest towards alternative sources of polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids (ω-3 FA) due to sustainability challenges faced by dependence on fish and plant-derived sources. Limited information exists on insects despite their promising potential. This work analyzed oils from seven insect species commonly consumed globally compared to commercial sesame oil using coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Oil yields from insects ranged between 11.1 mg/g to 115.3 mg/g. Over 67 fatty acids,

Role of Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Improving Metabolic Dysfunctions in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder that impacts women of reproductive age. In addition to reproductive and psychological complications, women with PCOS are also at a higher risk of developing metabolic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. While weight reduction can help manage these complications in overweight or obese women, many weight loss interventions have been ineffective due to weight stigma and its psychological impact on women with PCOS. Therefore, exploring alternative dietary strategies which do not focus on weight loss p

Dietary long-chain omega 3 fatty acids modify sphingolipid metabolism to facilitate airway hyperreactivity.

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) are essential nutrients that can affect inflammatory responses. While n-3 PUFAs are generally considered beneficial for cardiovascular disease and obesity, the effects on asthma, the most common inflammatory lung disease are unclear. While prenatal dietary n-3 PUFAs decrease the risk for childhood wheezing, postnatal dietary n-3 PUFAs can worsen allergic airway inflammation. Sphingolipid metabolism is also affected by dietary n-3 PUFAs. Decreased sphingolipid synthesis leads to airway hyperreactivity, besides inflammation, a cardinal feature of a

The Influences of Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids on the Development of Skin Cancers.

Dietary nutrition intake is essential for human beings and influences various physiological and pathological actions in the human body. Among various nutritional factors, dietary intake of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) has been shown to have various beneficial effects against inflammatory diseases. In addition to their therapeutic potency against inflammation, omega-3 PUFAs have also been shown to have anti-tumor effects via various mechanisms, such as cell arrest and apoptosis. To date, limited information is available on these effects in cutaneous malignancies. In this review,

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids: anti-inflammatory and anti-hypertriglyceridemia mechanisms in cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the world's most recognized and notorious cause of death. It is known that increased triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRLs) and remnants of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (RLP) are the major risk factor for CVD. Furthermore, hypertriglyceridemia commonly leads to a reduction in HDL and an increase in atherogenic small dense low-density lipoprotein (sdLDL or LDL-III) levels. Thus, the evidence shows that Ω-3 fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) have a beneficial effect on CVD through reprogramming of TRL metabolism, reducing infl

Plasma estradiol levels and antidepressant effects of omega-3 fatty acids in pregnant women.

BACKGROUND: Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) reduce depressive symptoms through an anti-inflammatory effect, and injection of both omega-3 PUFAs and estradiol (E2) induces antidepressant-like effects in rats by regulating the expression of inflammatory cytokines. The aims of this study were to examine the association of increased E2 during pregnancy with depressive symptoms and with inflammatory cytokines in women who were and were not supplemented with omega-3 PUFAs. METHODS: Pregnant women with Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale scores ≥9 were recruited at 12-24 weeks of gestat

Hypertriglyceridemia and omega-3 fatty acids: Their often overlooked role in cardiovascular disease prevention.

AIMS: This review aims to describe the pathogenic role of triglycerides in cardiometabolic risk, and the potential role of omega-3 fatty acids in the management of hypertriglyceridemia and cardiovascular disease. DATA SYNTHESIS: In epidemiological studies, hypertriglyceridemia correlates with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, even after adjustment for low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels. This has been further supported by Mendelian randomization studies where triglyceride-raising common single nucleotide polymorphisms confer an increased risk of developing cardiovasc
