G-cell density in the antral mucosa: a feasibility study.

In this work a new method for gastrin-secreting cell (G-cell) density measurement was employed in order to test the hypothesis that G-cell density of the antral mucosa can be estimated with an acceptable degree of error. The zone of antral mucosa where most G-cells are located was demarcated, its area was measured and the G-cells within this area were counted. The variation in the e error of the estimate according to normal distribution theory, and the size of the sampling expected to yield G-cell density values with a given error were assessed. Our data indicate that a very large surface of t

Brachial approach for intracoronary stent implantation: a feasibility study.

Implantation of coronary artery stents via the percutaneous femoral approach is associated with a high rate of vascular complications at the access site related to the size of the entry hole and the intense anticoagulation required to prevent stent thrombosis. Therefore we studied the feasibility of using the left brachial approach utilizing open arterial repair for implantation of coronary artery stents. Intracoronary stent implantation via the femoral approach in 24 patients (group A) was compared with implantation via the brachial approach in 16 patients (group B). Baseline lesion character

Obliteration of the gallbladder without formal cholecystectomy. A feasibility study.

Obliteration of the gallbladder without formal cholecystectomy was attempted in 36 rabbits, using an open technique for cannulation of the gallbladder during laparotomy. The gallbladder was cannulated, the proximal cystic duct was occluded with cyanoacrylate-nitrocellulose 2% wt/wt, and the gallbladder mucosa was exposed to various sclerosing agents to induce fibrosis. Heated 60% diatrizoate meglumine and absolute alcohol induced a controllable chronic cholecystitis with transmural fibrosis within two weeks, a result not seen with morrhuate sodium or in the control groups. All animals survived

An animal model of fulminant hepatic failure: a feasibility study.

An attempt was made to produce animal model of fulminant hepatic failure in the pig by intragastric administration of acetaminophen (N-acetyl-p-aminophenol). The effect of varying doses was observed in phenobarbital-pretreated and untreated animals. Assessment of optimal dose was made in terms of duration of survival and coma in animals exhibiting biochemical and histological evidence of liver necrosis. Significant liver necrosis was observed in enzyme-induced pigs only, whereas in the noninduced pigs respiratory arrest was considered a likely cause of death. Although liver necrosis occurred c

Feasibility study of microbubble enhanced echocardiography in normal horses.

UNLABELLED: Intrapulmonary shunting, a contributor to hypoxemia in both anesthetized and spontaneously breathing horses, may occur in association with pulmonary disease, general inhalation anesthesia, or systemic inflammation. In human medicine, transthoracic microbubble-enhanced echocardiography is a widely used method to detect intrapulmonary right-to-left shunting, especially in hepatopulmonary syndrome. This study aimed to adapt and evaluate the feasibility of this technique in horses, laying the groundwork for future clinical applications. Twelve healthy horses underwent two treatments: (

A feasibility study evaluating seismocardiography for the detection of heart failure.

The study aimed to develop a seismocardiograph (SCG)- based algorithm and assess its diagnostic performance in the detection of heart failure (HF). A total of 218 subjects were included: 198 with suspected HF and 20 with known HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) were included for testing only. Assessments were conducted using SCG, N-terminal pro b-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), electrocardiogram, NYHA classification and echocardiography. SCG-based algorithms, "AnyHF score" were developed to identify all subtypes of HF and "HFrEF-score" to identify HFrEF. Diagnostic accuracy was as

Colchicine and dialysis patients (CAD): protocol for a feasibility study.

INTRODUCTION: Colchicine has been shown to reduce cardiovascular events and may improve outcomes in arteriovenous fistulas used for haemodialysis due to antiproliferative effects. However, it is often avoided in patients receiving dialysis. Therefore, a large trial assessing the potential benefits of colchicine in dialysis patients cannot begin without further data on feasibility. The primary objective of this study is to assess the feasibility of carrying out future trials of colchicine in dialysis patients. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is an open-label, single centre, single arm study with 10

Predicting Hypertension Persistence in Coarctation of the Aorta: A Feasibility Study.

Hypertension (HTN), despite contemporary endovascular repair, is a common and challenging complication of coarctation of the aorta (CoA), and its mechanisms and optimal management remain uncertain. Using computed tomography angiography (CTA), we present a feasibility workflow that integrates statistical shape analysis (SSA), computational hemodynamics, and machine learning (ML) to investigate predictors of HTN persistence after endovascular treatment. It builds on our randomized controlled trial comparing safety and efficacy of two types of aortic stents, in which all patients underwent a 3-ye

Is Cooler Safer and More Advantageous? A Feasibility Study in Rabbits.

OBJECTIVES: This study hypothesizes that induced hypothermia (IH) can safely extend aortic cross-clamp (ACC) time, significantly reducing metabolic burden and end-organ injury, thereby enabling more comprehensive aortic arch reconstructions and offering distinct advantages. METHODS: In this experimental animal research, 62 New Zealand white rabbits were randomized into normothermia (39°C) and mild hypothermia (35°C) groups. Animals in each group underwent proximal aortic arch (PAA) clamping for 20, 30, or 40 minutes. Serial blood samples measured biochemistry, oxidative stress biomarkers, art

Ultrasound and Photoacoustic Imaging of Peripheral Arteries: A Feasibility Study.

Photoacoustic imaging of the arteries can provide valuable functional information to diagnose and classify atherosclerotic plaques. When combined with ultrasound for anatomical information, photoacoustic imaging holds promise for routine monitoring and for treatment decisions. However, utilizing conventional ultrasound systems for combined photoacoustic and ultrasound imaging has not been successful for this application. In this study, we imaged two major arteries susceptible to atherosclerosis-the carotid artery and the femoral artery-using a linear array-based system. Our results demonstrate

Consciousness in deep hypothermic circulatory arrest: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Studies have not explored consciousness during deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (DHCA). However, as studies in cardiac arrest have identified a spectrum of consciousness, we sought to establish the feasibility of studying consciousness during DHCA. METHODS: This was a prospective study across 10 hospitals with 36 DHCA patients undergoing thoracic aortic aneurysm repair or pulmonary endarterectomy. A tablet computer delivered audiovisual stimuli (images and names of three fruits) using headphones during each procedure as a potential test of implicit learning and explicit recall.
