Novel Tissue Mechanics-Guided Cellular Flows Enable the Evolution of Feather Follicles.

Complex tissue architecture is achieved through multiple rounds of morphological transitions. Here, we analyzed cellular flows and tissue mechanics during avian skin development. We showed how novel cellular flows initiate chemo-mechanical circuits that guide epithelial protrusion, folding, invagination, and spatial cell fate specification. In the initial feather bud formation, stiff dermal condensates protrude vertically out of the locally softened epithelial sheet. As the bud elongates, it stretches the epithelial cells at the base, which mechanically activates YAP and causes the epithelial

Immunogenicity of DNA, mRNA and Subunit Vaccines Against Beak and Feather Disease Virus.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Beak and feather disease virus (BFDV) is the causative agent of psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD), affecting psittacine birds. There is currently no commercial vaccine or treatment for this disease. This study developed a novel BFDV coat protein mRNA vaccine encapsidated by TMV coat protein to form pseudovirions (PsVs) and tested its immunogenicity alongside BFDV coat protein (CP) subunit and DNA vaccine candidates. METHODS: mRNA and BFDV CP subunit vaccine candidates were produced in Nicotiana benthamiana and subsequently purified using PEG precipitation and g

Replication kinetics of turkey herpesvirus in lymphoid organs and feather follicle epithelium in chickens.

Marek's disease virus (MDV) is an oncogenic alphaherpesvirus that causes immunosuppression, T-cell lymphomas, and neuropathic disease in infected chickens. To protect chickens from MDV infection, an avirulent live vaccine of turkey herpesvirus (HVT) has been successfully used for chickens worldwide. Similar to MDV for natural infection in both chickens and turkeys, HVT also infects lung in the early stage of infection and then lymphocytes from lymphoid organs. Virus replication requires cell-to-cell contact for spreading and semi-productive lytic replication in T and B cells. Then, cell-free i

Ingestion of Lactobacillus rhamnosus modulates chronic stress-induced feather pecking in chickens.

Feather pecking (FP) is a stress-induced neuropsychological disorder of birds. Intestinal dysbiosis and inflammation are common traits of these disorders. FP is, therefore, proposed to be a behavioral consequence of dysregulated communication between the gut and the brain. Probiotic bacteria are known to favorably modulate the gut microbiome and hence the neurochemical and immune components of the gut-brain axis. Consequently, probiotic supplementation represents a promising new therapeutic to mitigate widespread FP in domestic chickens. We monitored FP, gut microbiota composition, immune mark

Resistance of Feather-Associated Bacteria to Intermediate Levels of Ionizing Radiation near Chernobyl.

Ionizing radiation has been shown to produce negative effects on organisms, although little is known about its ecological and evolutionary effects. As a study model, we isolated bacteria associated with feathers from barn swallows Hirundo rustica from three study areas around Chernobyl differing in background ionizing radiation levels and one control study site in Denmark. Each bacterial community was exposed to four different γ radiation doses ranging from 0.46 to 3.96 kGy to test whether chronic exposure to radiation had selected for resistant bacterial strains. Experimental radiation durati

[Improved IgG Antibody Diagnostics of Feather Duvet Lung by an Antibody Screening Test].

The underdiagnosed feather duvet lung, an extrinsic allergic alveolitis (hypersensitivity pneumonitis) caused by duck and goose feathers, can be more frequently diagnosed, if duck and goose feather antibodies are included in the panel of the routinely applied IgG antibody screening test. This does not necessarily require extending the screening test to include duck and goose feather antigens. By analysing 100 sera with duck and goose antibodies we found that the commonly used pigeon and budgerigar antibodies can also screen for feather duvet antibodies. All examined sera lacking pigeon and bud

The effect of dietary alterations during rearing on feather condition in broiler breeder females.

In commercial production, broiler breeders are severely feed restricted to maintain healthy BW. This restriction can induce stereotypic behavior, including feather pecking, which has negative welfare implications for both the victim and performer. It has been suggested that the problem may be symptomatic of chronic hunger or the frustration of feeding motivation. In this study, we determined whether feather condition, as an indirect measure of feather pecking, could be improved via dietary manipulation. Six dietary treatments were tested, each with 5 replicate pens of 9 to 12 birds. Control di

Quantitative genetic analysis of traits related to fear and feather pecking in laying hens.

Feather pecking is a well known problem in flocks of laying hens. It is partially controlled by genetics. Fear is frequently reported to be related with feather pecking. The present study reports the result from a quantitative genetic analysis of feather pecking and three fear test traits in laying hens. Fear was recorded by the tonic immobility test, the open field activity and the emergence box test. These were recorded at a juvenile and adult age of the hens. The heritability of feather pecking was 0.16, and in the range between 0.07 and 0.14 for the fear test traits. Genetic correlations b

Effects of Endotoxin and Psychological Stress on Redox Physiology, Immunity and Feather Corticosterone in Greenfinches.

Assessment of costs accompanying activation of immune system and related neuroendocrine pathways is essential for understanding the selective forces operating on these systems. Here we attempted to detect such costs in terms of disruption to redox balance and interference between different immune system components in captive wild-caught greenfinches (Carduelis chloris). Study birds were subjected to an endotoxin-induced inflammatory challenge and temporary exposure to a psychological stressor (an image of a predator) in a 2*2 factorial experiment. Injection of bacterial endotoxin resulted in u

Sorption behavior of artificial keratin fibers from feathers with anionically charged azo and anthraquinone dyes for potential industrial applications.

Sorption thermodynamics and kinetics of 100 % artificial keratin fibers with acid dyes have been studied to understand the surface properties, dyeability, and suitability for industrial applications. For a sustainable textile fiber industry, affordable biobased fibers with good dyeability and performance properties are essential for commercial acceptance. Artificial keratin fibers developed from waste feathers have already demonstrated excellent strength and wet stability due to their high degree of disulfide crosslinkages and can be cost-effective as well. However, their dyeability and relate

Effects of L-Methionine and DL-Methionine on Growth Performance, Methionine-Metabolizing Enzyme Activities, Feather Traits, and Intestinal Morphology of Medium-Growing, Yellow-Feathered Chickens between 1 and 30 Days of Age.

This experiment investigated the effects of L-Methionine (L-Met) on growth performance, Met-metabolizing enzyme activity, feather traits, and small intestinal morphological characteristics, and compared these with DL-Methionine (DL-Met) for medium-growing, yellow-feathered broilers during the starter phase. Furthermore, the aim was to provide recommendations for the appropriate dietary Met levels in feed. A total of 1584 1-d broilers were randomly divided into 11 treatment groups with six replicates of 24 birds each: basal diet (CON, Met 0.28%), basal diet + L-Met (0.04%, 0.08%, 0.12%, 0.16%,

Whole-genome sequencing of Chlamydia psittaci from Australasian avian hosts: A genomics approach to a pathogen that still ruffles feathers.

Chlamydia psittaci is a globally distributed veterinary pathogen with zoonotic potential. Although C. psittaci infections have been reported in various hosts, isolation and culture of Chlamydia is challenging, hampering efforts to produce contemporary global C. psittaci genomes. This is particularly evident in the lack of avian C. psittaci genomes from Australia and New Zealand. In this study, we used culture-independent probe-based whole-genome sequencing to expand the global C. psittaci genome catalogue. Here, we provide new C. psittaci genomes from two pigeons, six psittacines, and novel ho

Bioelectric state transitions enable de novo feather bud formation in developing skin.

Tissue patterning is integral to development and regeneration, yet the factors that initiate morphogenetic patterning remain to be explored. Here, using embryonic chicken skin as a model, we show that perturbation of calcium signaling induces de novo feather bud formation in regions that normally do not form feather buds. This is achieved through coordinated changes in calcium dynamics, endogenous bioelectric currents, transcriptional regulation of calcium and potassium channel genes, and morphogen signaling. Different combinations of channel perturbations altered the number, distribution, siz

YOLO12 Down Feather Quality Classification Method Based on A2C2f-CGLU Feature Enhancement.

Manual sorting is still the mainstream scheme for component identification in down feather quality evaluation, which suffers from low detection efficiency and poor stability. To address these drawbacks, this paper proposes a fine-grained component detection algorithm based on YOLO12 for down feather quality classification. Five typical down feather components are selected as detection targets, including discolored feathers, down filaments, immature down, feathers and pure down. A dedicated down feather object detection dataset consisting of 1140 images is established accordingly. To improve th

Research on the Structural Characteristics and the Fracture Resistance Mechanism of the Primary Flight Feather Shaft in Vulture.

The primary flight feather shaft (PFF) plays a crucial role in adjusting avian's flight posture and flight speed while bearing intense aerodynamic force, and it demonstrates exceptional mechanical properties and fracture resistance. The influence of the structure of a PFF on its fracture resistance mechanism (including crack initiation resistance and crack propagation resistance) remains unclear. This study focused on the research subject of the PFF of Aegypius monachus (cinereous vulture) and the impact of the macro/microstructural characteristics and components on the fracture resistance mec
