Crytosporidium oocysts in feces were recognizable in the electron microscope when prepared by the negative staining technique used by virologists. Their size, shape, and surface markings were sufficiently characteristic for cryptosporidiosis to be diagnosed by this method if more suitable methods are not available.

In comparison to normal controls (n = 71) the activity of intestinal alkaline phosphatase in feces is reduced in chronic bowel disease using an immunoprecipitation method: patients with Crohns disease (n = 40) or inactive ulcerative colitis (n = 29) demonstrate small changes of fecal intestinal alkaline phosphate activity in comparison to normal controls. Intestinal alkaline phosphatase is reduced in patients with active ulcerative colitis (n = 11) to 50%, in patients with uraemic enteropathy (n = 18) to 30% and in patients with coeliac disease (n = 14) to 20% of the activity observed in norma

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate detection of Escherichia coli heat-stable enterotoxin (ST) in the feces of calves as a method for implicating E coli in neonatal calf diarrhea. The first experiment evaluated the use of the infant mouse test for detection of ST in the feces of calves with naturally occurring diarrhea. Simultaneous identification of bovine enteropathogenic strains of E coli (EEC) and of other infective agents implicated in neonatal calf diarrhea was attempted in these samples. The ST was detected with certainty in only 7 of 41 samples from calves less than or equal to

BACKGROUND: Extrauterine growth restriction (EUGR) affects a substantial proportion of preterm infants and may influence both short-term complications and long-term sequelae. While many preterm infants with EUGR are secondary to small for gestational age (SGA) or very low birth weight (VLBW), a subset of EUGR infants do not exhibit these conditions. The purpose of this study is to investigate the metabolic profiles and biomarkers of EUGR infants in the absence of SGA and VLBW.
METHODS: A total of 100 feces (n = 50) and plasma samples (n = 50) were collected from participants categorized as ei

The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) from 16 feces samples of pig farm, and to evaluate the probiotic potential of these isolates as potential oral probiotic candidates. The selection process was based on the isolation, identification, and a series of experiments for the selection of appropriate candidates with beneficial properties. The results demonstrated that most of LAB showed relatively strong resistance to pH 2.5 and high bile salts (1%), and had good survival in simulated gastric and intestinal juice. 9 isolates displayed antimicrobial activi

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurologic disorder that causes the brain to shrink and brain cells to die. Lung cancer is characterized by high morbidity and mortality, late diagnosis and poor prognosis. And there is no specific mechanism to explain the epidemiological correlation between AD and lung cancer.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Lewis lung cancer cells (LLC) were injected into the left forelimb armpit of APP/PS1 mice to establish a tumor-bearing model. After remodeling the gut microbiota by fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), the tumor were collected and analyzed

Coxsackievirus A24 variant (CVA24v), the main causative agent of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC), can be isolated from both the eyes and lower alimentary tract. However, the molecular features of CVA24v in feces is not well-documented. In this study, we compared the VP1 and 3C sequences of CVA24v strains isolated from feces during AHC epidemics in Cuba in 1997, 2003, and 2008-2009 with those obtained from conjunctival swabs during the same epidemic period. The sequence analyses of the 3C and VP1 region of stool isolates from the three epidemics showed a high degree of nucleotide identit

PURPOSE: To automate the detection and identification of visible components in feces for early diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases, we propose FecalNet, a method using multiple deep neural networks.
METHODS: FecalNet uses the ResNet152 residual network to extract and learn the characteristics of visible components in fecal microscopic images, acquire feature maps in combination with the feature pyramid network, apply the full convolutional network to classify and locate the fecal components, and implement the improved focal loss function to reoptimize the classification results. This allow

Nano-sized extracellular vesicles (EVs), including exosomes, microvesicles, and other types of vesicles, are released by most mammalian cells and bacteria. We here ask whether feces contain EVs of mammalian and/or bacterial origin, and whether these EVs induce systemic inflammation. Fecal extracellular vesicles (fEVs) were isolated from mice and humans. The presence of EVs from Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using anti-lipid A and anti-lipoteichoic acid antibodies, whereas Western blot using anti-beta-actin antibody was employed to de

Bacteroides is a predominant anaerobic bacteria of the human colon. Since the ten species of the Bacteroides fragilis group are responsible for most anaerobic endogenous infections, the antimicrobial resistance of these bacteria is of great concern due to the role they can play in the dissemination of resistance. Eighty non-diarrheic human feces samples were analyzed. Each sample was inoculated in BBE (Bacteroides Bile Esculin) and KVLB (Kanamycin, Vancomycin, Laked Blood) agar plates and were incubated in anaerobic conditions for 48 h at 35 degrees C. For identification and antimicrobial sens

A multiplex PCR assay for differentiating strongyle eggs from cattle has recently been described; however, the egg disruption and DNA extraction procedures, though effective, are inadequate for large studies or clinical application. The purpose of this research was to evaluate methods for disrupting trichostrongyle eggs, then assess commercial kits for extracting egg DNA using Ostertagia ostertagi as a model species. Egg disruption procedures tested included probe sonication, bath sonication, bead beating, boiling, microwaving, proteinase K/SDS digestion, freezing, and various combinations of

Assays of reproductive hormone metabolites require validation in each animal species. For validation of methodology in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), fecal samples were collected from females that had been injected by blowgun with estradiol, progesterone, or a control substance. Analysis by radioimmunoassay revealed that estradiol and pregnanediol were more abundant fecal metabolites of estrogens and progestins than were estrone or progesterone. Peak excretion rates of estradiol and pregnanediol occurred within 12 and 24 hr of injection, respectively. Ovulation time was estimated

Blood-feeding stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.), are reportedly attracted to conspecific feces. We investigated whether stable flies are attracted to fly feces-derived bacteria, and whether attraction varies with bacterial species and growth substrate, and the sex and reproductive status of foraging flies. We isolated seven bacterial species from fecal deposits of stable flies. In laboratory two-choice bioassays with paired adhesive-coated traps baited with sterile agar or bacteria-inoculated agar, the seven bacterial species in combination repelled flies. However, the bacterial congeners

Bacteroidota, a diverse phylum of bacteria, includes classes whose members are increasingly recognized for their significant contributions to host health, particularly through their antimicrobial properties. This study investigates the functional diversity of 42 new Bacteroidia and Sphingobacteriia strains enriched and identified from diverse hosts, including mouse ceca and human stool samples. Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing, we phylogenetically characterized the strains of the genera Bacteroides, Phocaeicola, and Sphingobacterium and assessed their functional properties related to potential b

Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) is a significant zoonotic pathogen, primarily causing opportunistic infections in humans while often existing as a commensal in animal reservoirs, facilitating its dissemination. Current understanding of the resistance profiles, virulence mechanisms, and host-pathogen interactions of E. faecalis from ruminants, particularly unique species such as the plateau yak, remains limited. This knowledge gap hinders the accurate assessment of their transmission risk and the development of effective control strategies. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of a

Nosocomial infections caused by multidrug-resistant enterobacteria have become a major challenge in global public health. Previous studies have indicated that use of antibiotics in livestock production chains is linked to the rising threat of antibiotic resistance in humans. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the distribution of genes encoding resistance to tetracycline, β-lactams, and colistin in multidrug-resistant enterobacteria isolated from feces of weaned pigs. Ninety-four enterobacteria isolates were submitted to antibiotic susceptibility test by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC).

The aim of this study was to identify the aggregation sites and transmission characteristics of Gasterophilus pecorum, the dominant pathogen of endangered equines in desert steppe. Therefore, we tested with a four-arm olfactometer the olfactory response of the G. pecorum adults to the odors that have a great impact on their life cycle, and also investigated the occurrence sites of the adults in the area where the Przewalski's horse (Equus przewalskii) roam frequently during the peak period of G. pecorum infection. The results of four-directional olfactory test showed that the fresh horse feces

The Adenoviridae family is composed by a high diversity of viruses that are extremely resistant in environment and are frequently excreted in animal reservoir feces for long periods. The knowledge of adenovirus (AdV) diversity among wild species may be important for the understanding of the epidemiology of putative emerging diseases. Cavia aperea aperea, commonly known as wild guinea pigs, wild cavies, or preas, are small herbivorous rodents widely distributed throughout South America and classified in Caviidae family, as well as domestic guinea pigs and capybaras. In order to investigate thei
