Processing of auditory feedback in perisylvian and insular cortex.

When we speak, we not only make movements with our mouth, lips, and tongue, but we also hear the sound of our own voice. Thus, speech production in the brain involves not only controlling the movements we make, but also auditory and sensory feedback. Auditory responses are typically suppressed during speech production compared to perception, but how this manifests across space and time is unclear. Here we recorded intracranial EEG in seventeen pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients with medication-resistant epilepsy who performed a reading/listening task to investigate how other auditory re

Integrated Feedforward and Feedback Mechanisms in Neurovascular Coupling.

Neurovascular coupling (NVC) is the mechanism that drives the neurovascular response to neural activation, and NVC dysfunction has been implicated in various neurologic diseases. NVC is driven by (1) nonmetabolic feedforward mechanisms that are mediated by various signaling pathways and (2) metabolic feedback mechanisms that involve metabolic factors. However, the interplay between these feedback and feedforward mechanisms remains unresolved. We propose that feedforward mechanisms normally drive a swift, neural activation-induced regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) overshoot, which floods the

Utilization of peripheral nerve feedback at a preconscious level.

INTRODUCTION: Sensorimotor integration is important, if not required, when using our hands. The integration of the tactile and motor systems is disrupted in individuals with upper limb amputations because their connection to their fingertips is lost. Direct cortical stimulation allows for modality and location matched perceptions; however, studies show that the time to process and act upon direct cortical feedback significantly exceeds the time to do the same with naturally produced tactile feedback. Direct cortical stimulation does not engage multiple parallel structures in the brain stem mea

Effects of dynamic visual feedback system on seasickness.

Motion sickness (MS) poses challenges for individuals affected, hindering their activities and travel. This study investigates the effect of a visual dynamic device, forming an artificial horizon plane, on symptoms and physiological changes induced by MS. This device consists of vertical light-emitting diodes whose illumination varies according to the boat's movements. Fifteen subjects with moderate-to-severe MS susceptibility were exposed to a seasickness simulator with and without the device. Symptoms were assessed immediately after exposure. Time spent in the simulator, heart rate, and temp

The nonlinear feedback dynamics of asymmetric political polarization.

Using a general model of opinion dynamics, we conduct a systematic investigation of key mechanisms driving elite polarization in the United States. We demonstrate that the self-reinforcing nature of elite-level processes can explain this polarization, with voter preferences accounting for its asymmetric nature. Our analysis suggests that subtle differences in the frequency and amplitude with which public opinion shifts left and right over time may have a differential effect on the self-reinforcing processes of elites, causing Republicans to polarize more quickly than Democrats. We find that as

Social anxiety disorder and memory for positive feedback.

Clinical theorists postulate that individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) display memory biases such that recall of social events becomes more negative with time; however, alternative memory models have also been proposed. Research has focused predominantly on selective recall of negative information with inconsistent findings. The goal of the current study was to examine potential biases in recall of positive social feedback. Individuals with SAD (n = 59) and nonanxious community controls (n = 63) engaged in an unexpected public speaking task and received standardized positive or neutr

Control of cardiac alternans by mechanical and electrical feedback.

A persistent alternation in the cardiac action potential duration has been linked to the onset of ventricular arrhythmia, which may lead to sudden cardiac death. A coupling between these cardiac alternans and the intracellular calcium dynamics has also been identified in previous studies. In this paper, the system of PDEs describing the small amplitude of alternans and the alternation of peak intracellular Ca(2+) are stabilized by optimal boundary and spatially distributed actuation. A simulation study demonstrating the successful annihilation of both alternans on a one-dimensional cable of ca

Evidence for feedback control of pineal melatonin secretion.

Melatonin is the principle hormonal product of the pineal gland. It is secreted with a robust daily rhythm, peaking near the middle of the night. During the daytime, concentrations remain very low, as exposure to light robustly suppresses its secretion. The regulation of melatonin by light is well-characterized, but an interesting feature of the daily melatonin rhythm is that its peak occurs near the middle of the night and then levels begin to drop hours before morning light exposure. The mechanism underlying the light-independent drop in melatonin during late night remains unspecified. Feedb

Feedback frequency in treatment for childhood apraxia of speech.

PURPOSE: To examine the role of feedback frequency in treatment for childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Reducing the frequency of feedback enhances motor learning, and recently, such feedback frequency reductions have been recommended for the treatment of CAS. However, no published studies have explicitly compared different feedback frequencies in this population. METHOD: Using an alternating treatments single-subject design with multiple baselines across behaviors, retention and transfer of learning were compared following high-frequency feedback and low-frequency feedback in 4 children with

Inflammatory/stress feedback dysregulation in women with fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVE: Although one of the current hypotheses of the aetiology of fibromyalgia (FM) syndrome involves inflammatory and neuroendocrine disorders, its biophysiology still remains unclear. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the systemic inflammatory and stress responses, as well as the innate response mediated by monocytes and neutrophils in FM patients. METHODS: Twenty-five women diagnosed with primary FM and 20 age-matched healthy women (control group) were enrolled in the study. Circulating 'neuroendocrine-stress' biomarkers (CRH, ACTH, cortisol, NA, eHsp72, serotonin a

Effects of tailored feedback on multiple health behaviors.

BACKGROUND: The effects of tailored intervention on multiple behaviors and possible moderators of tailoring effects have not yet been sufficiently demonstrated. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a computer-tailored intervention on smoking; physical activity; and fruit, vegetable, and fat intake; and to test potential moderators of the effectiveness (BMI, age, SES, gender, motivation, and the number of behaviors for which respondents met the recommendations from national guidelines). METHODS: Respondents were randomly assigned to a tailored intervention gr

Altered auditory feedback and the treatment of stuttering: a review.

UNLABELLED: Several authors have suggested that devices delivering altered auditory feedback (AAF) may be a viable treatment for adults and children who stutter. This paper reviews published, peer reviewed journal papers from the past 10 years that investigate the effect of AAF during different speaking conditions, tasks and situations. A review of that literature indicates that considerable experimental evidence and limited Phase 1 treatment outcome evidence has been accumulated about the effect of AAF on the speech of people who stutter. However, critical knowledge about the effect of AAF du

Inaccurate feedback and performance on the Müller-Lyer illusion.

The effects of accurate and erroneous feedback on magnitude of illusion for the Müller-Lyer illusion were examined. The provision of accurate feedback substantially reduced the magnitude of the Müller-Lyer illusion whereas the influences of inaccurate feedback were dependent upon whether subjects were prompted to overestimate or to underestimate the length of the comparison line.

Evaluation of the tubuloglomerular feedback system in human subjects.

It has been shown in animals that GFR decreases after administration of a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor (CAI) because of activation of the tubuloglomerular feedback. However, the magnitude of this response has never been studied in healthy subjects, nor has the possibility of inhibiting tubuloglomerular feedback with frusemide (FRU). Changes in CCr, V, CNa, CCl, CH2O, CLi were studied before and after acute administration of acetazolamide (ACZ) to 11 normal subjects or FRU to 9 normal subjects. Both ACZ and FRU increased V, CNa, CCl and CLi. Only FRU decreased CH2O. ACZ but not FRU decreased CC

Presence of positive feedback in males with Klinefelter's syndrome.

This study examined the effect of 17 beta-estradiol (E2) on basal and luteinizing hormone (LH)-releasing hormone (LHRH)-stimulated gonadotropin secretion in 9 patients with Klinefelter's syndrome. Intramuscular injection of E2 (10 micrograms/kg/day during 5 days) induced a rapid decrease in follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and LH levels. The maximum suppression was observed on day 7 (D7) for FSH [median 9.7 mIU/ml (range 4.6-37.8) vs. 21.7 mIU/ml (range 12.2-56.9)] and on D2 for LH [median 13.6 mIU/ml (range 6.8-25.2) vs. 21.2 mIU/ml (range 13-54.7)]. E2 concentrations rose and reached their

Estrogen positive feedback on LH secretion in transsexuality.

In order to test the hypothesis whether there is variation in hormonal levels or response to hormonal manipulation that could permit a distinction between heterosexuals and transsexuals, we designed the following protocol: Six male-to-female (m-to-f) transsexuals, six heterosexual control females and six female-to-male (f-to-m) transsexuals were given estradiol benzoate (E2B) (4.5 micrograms/kg/12 hr) for five days. In the female population, E2B treatment was initiated on day 5 of the menstrual cycle. In all the subjects blood luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), es

Role of auditory feedback in canary song development.

As in other songbirds, early deafening had drastic effects on the song of the roller canary, a cardueline finch, resulting in a song that was much simpler and more variable than the normal. The repertoire of the syllable types, of which the song is made, was reduced from 30 to a mean of 5.0. Loud white noise was successfully used as a reversible method of cutting off auditory feedback from vocal behavior. Although suffering permanent elevation of hearing thresholds, birds reared in noise to 200 days, singing at first like deaf birds, subsequently increased their syllable repertoires significan
