A multi-layer mean-field model of the cerebellum embedding microstructure and population-specific dynamics.

Mean-field (MF) models are computational formalism used to summarize in a few statistical parameters the salient biophysical properties of an inter-wired neuronal network. Their formalism normally incorporates different types of neurons and synapses along with their topological organization. MFs are crucial to efficiently implement the computational modules of large-scale models of brain function, maintaining the specificity of local cortical microcircuits. While MFs have been generated for the isocortex, they are still missing for other parts of the brain. Here we have designed and simulated

Sparse Coding and Temporal Pattern Learning Co-Mediated by Dual Spike-Timing-Dependent Plasticity in a Multilayer Excitatory-Inhibitory Spiking Network.

Excitatory-inhibitory (E-I) local circuits play a central role in synaptic plasticity and neural coding, yet their multilayer learning dynamics remain poorly understood. We constructed a multilayer feedforward spiking neural network with intra-layer E-I connectivity, using Izhikevich neurons to model regular spiking (RS) and fast spiking (FS) cells, and examined cooperative learning under excitatory and inhibitory spike-timing-dependent plasticity (eSTDP and iSTDP). FS-mediated lateral inhibition alleviates the long-term depression bias arising from RS firing rate adaptation via winner-take-al

Decoding Early Neurochemical Dynamics in Circuit Dysfunction of Parkinson's Disease via Synergetic SERS and Electrophysiological Probe Suite.

The pathological mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases remain poorly defined, largely due to the lack of tools capable of detecting molecular alterations before the onset of clinical symptoms. Here we successfully achieve targeted profiling of dopamine (DA) and nontargeted profiling of amino acid (AA) molecules in the lesioned substantia nigra of Parkinson's disease (PD) mouse by intergrating ex vivo surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) probes with concurrent in vivo electrophysiological recordings in the primary motor cortex. The PD model was established by stereotaxic unilat

Use of Transfer Learning for the Automated Segmentation and Detection of Swallows via Digital Cervical Auscultation in Children.

Digital cervical auscultation (CA) has high diagnostic test accuracy in the detection of aspiration in children. However, the clinical application of digital CA is limited because swallow sound recordings require manual segmentation by trained experts, which is time consuming and not feasible in clinical practice. The automated detection of swallowing sounds in adults from sound recordings have reported accuracies between 76 and 95%. No equivalent literature exists for the automated detection of swallowing sounds in children. This study aimed to establish whether automated machine learning usi

A simple model of the electrosensory electromotor loop in Gymnotus omarorum.

This article introduces and tests a simple model that describes a neural network found in nature, the electrosensory control of an electromotor pacemaker. The cornerstone of the model is an early-stage filter based on the subtraction of a feedforward integrated version of the recent sensory past from the present input signal. The output of this filter governs the modulation of a premotor pacemaker command driving the sensory signal carrier generation and, in consequence, the timing of subsequent electrosensory input. This early filter has a biological parallel in the known connectivity of the

High spatially sensitive quantitative phase imaging assisted with deep neural network for classification of human spermatozoa under stressed condition.

Sperm cell motility and morphology observed under the bright field microscopy are the only criteria for selecting a particular sperm cell during Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) procedure of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART). Several factors such as oxidative stress, cryopreservation, heat, smoking and alcohol consumption, are negatively associated with the quality of sperm cell and fertilization potential due to the changing of subcellular structures and functions which are overlooked. However, bright field imaging contrast is insufficient to distinguish tiniest morphological cell

Beetle-inspired responsive photonic microgel assemblies for multi-sensing enhanced by machine learning.

Bioinspired photonic hydrogels hold promise as sensors; however, their use in triple-analyte sensing optical devices has been minimally explored. Temperature, serum Fe3+ levels, and X-ray doses are critical factors for predicting and monitoring medical and health issues. For the first time, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-vinyl ferrocene) microgel-based assemblies, also known as interferometers, integrated with machine learning (ML) are introduced for detecting these analysts of interest. The interferometers demonstrate the exceptional capability for sensing with superior sensitivity, reversibil

Distributed representations of prediction error signals across the cortical hierarchy are synergistic.

A relevant question concerning inter-areal communication in the cortex is whether these interactions are synergistic. Synergy refers to the complementary effect of multiple brain signals conveying more information than the sum of each isolated signal. Redundancy, on the other hand, refers to the common information shared between brain signals. Here, we dissociated cortical interactions encoding complementary information (synergy) from those sharing common information (redundancy) during prediction error (PE) processing. We analyzed auditory and frontal electrocorticography (ECoG) signals in fi

Do you have COVID-19? An artificial intelligence-based screening tool for COVID-19 using acoustic parameters.

This study aimed to develop an artificial intelligence (AI)-based tool for screening COVID-19 patients based on the acoustic parameters of their voices. Twenty-five acoustic parameters were extracted from voice samples of 203 COVID-19 patients and 171 healthy individuals who produced a sustained vowel, i.e., /a/, as long as they could after a deep breath. The selected acoustic parameters were from different categories including fundamental frequency and its perturbation, harmonicity, vocal tract function, airflow sufficiency, and periodicity. After the feature extraction, different machine lea

ICTD: Combination of Improved CNN-Transformer and Enhanced Deep Canonical Correlation Analysis for Eye-Movement Emotion Classification.

Background/Objectives: Emotion classification based on eye-movement features has become a widely adopted approach due to the simplicity of data acquisition and the strong association between ocular responses and emotional states. However, several challenges remain with regard to existing emotion recognition methods, including the relatively weak correlation between eye-movement features and emotional labels and the fact that the key features are not prominently presented. Methods: To address abovelimitations, this study proposes an improved CNN-transformer combined with enhanced deep canonical

RETRACTED: Natural gas price prediction based on artificial intelligence models.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The natural gas supply crisis triggered by the Russia-Ukraine conflict has laid bare the energy market's extreme vulnerability in the face of geopolitical risk, highlighting the need for accurate multi-step gas price forecasting. However, most AI-based energy price studies have a gap: they focus on single-step prediction or homogeneous model comparisons, lacking analysis of performance degradation in multi-step dynamic frameworks. This study takes daily natural gas price data from the Henry Hub in the United States from 1997 to 2024 as the research object, constructs a multi-step prediction fr

A soft grasper with bioinspired morphology and synthetic nervous system control reduces damage to deformable objects and fruits during handling.

The design of robotic graspers that can safely interact with deformable, damage-prone materials such as fruits, vegetables, and biological tissues remains an ongoing challenge in robotics. Conventional robotic graspers made of mostly rigid materials have limited compliance and tactile sensing, reducing their applicability to contact-rich manipulation of soft objects. In contrast, humans and animals can interact with their environments safely and intelligently through their bodies' structural properties and nervous systems' computational capabilities. In this article, we present the design and

A machine learning surrogate model for fast approximation of simulated microwave ablation zones.

Microwave ablation (MWA) is a minimally invasive therapy for liver, lung, and kidney tumors. Computational modeling using finite element methods (FEMs) can simulate ablation zones but is computationally expensive and unsuitable for interactive use. This study develops and evaluates a machine learning surrogate model to rapidly approximate 50 °C isothermal contours from FEM simulations of MWA, enabling faster computational exploration. A feedforward neural network was trained on 2625 FEM simulations incorporating tumor geometry and dielectric properties. Predictions were compared with FEM-deriv
