Zea mays Volatiles that Influence Oviposition and Feeding Behaviors of Spodoptera frugiperda.

Fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) is a major global pest of many crops, including maize (Zea mays). This insect is known to use host plant-derived volatile organic compounds to locate suitable hosts during both its adult and larval stages, yet the function of individual compounds remains mostly enigmatic. In this study, we use a combination of volatile profiling, electrophysiological assays, pair-wise choice behavioral assays, and chemical supplementation treatments to identify and assess specific compounds from maize that influence S. frugiperda host location. Our findings reveal that met

Parental Feeding Behaviors and Weight-Related Concerns in Children With Special Needs.

Parental feeding behaviors and concern about child weight are associated with obesity among youth who are typically developing. Little is known about this relationship among parents of youth with special needs, despite these children having higher obesity risk. This study used an online survey to explore associations among parental feeding behaviors, parent weight concerns, demographics, and child weight status in a sample of 356 parents of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, spina bifida, and Down syndrome. Specific parental feeding behaviors were significantly related to the ch

Associations of infant feeding practices and picky eating behaviors of preschool children.

Picky eating behaviors are prevalent during childhood and are often linked to nutritional problems. However, information on the determinants of picky eating behaviors during infancy, when food acceptance patterns develop, is scarce. This study was conducted to evaluate the impact of infant feeding practices on the development of picky eating behaviors during preschool years. Baseline survey data from the Synergistic Theory and Research on Obesity and Nutrition Group Kids (STRONG Kids) program were used for this retrospective data analysis. Primary caregiver-child dyads were recruited from chil

Stimulation of kappa opioid receptors in the nucleus accumbens promotes feeding behavior in mice: Acute restoration of feeding during anorexia induced by 5-fluorouracil.

Though μ and δ opioid receptors are reported to regulate energy homeostasis, any role for κ opioid receptors in these processes remains unclear. The present study investigated the role of κ opioid receptors in regulation of feeding behavior and plasma glucose levels using nalfurafine, a κ opioid receptor agonist used clinically. Systemic injection of nalfurafine increased food intake under non-fasted conditions, but not after food deprivation, and this effect was inhibited by the κ opioid receptor antagonist norbinaltorphimine. In contrast, nalfurafine did not affect plasma glucose levels. I.c

Effect of pre- and postpartum supplementation of a pure glycerol product to dairy cows on feeding behavior, lying behavior, and reticulorumen pH.

The objective of this study was to quantify the effects of supplementing a low level of dry glycerol product pre- and postpartum on the feeding behavior, lying behavior, and reticulorumen pH of dairy cows. Multiparous Holstein dairy cows (n = 60) were enrolled in a 2 × 2 factorial design study. Twenty-one days before expected parturition, cows individually received a dry cow diet with (1) 250 g/d glycerol supplementation (GLY; 66% pure glycerol, United States Pharmacopeia grade), or (2) no supplementation (CON). Following parturition, cows were individually assigned to either (1) 250 g/d glyce

Genomic analysis reveals potential involvement of the brain-retina axis in regulating chicken feeding behavior.

Feeding behavior is a fundamental biological process closely linked to development, growth, metabolism, and immune regulation in animals. In livestock production, it serves as both an indicator of health status and a selection criterion for breeding programs aimed at improving feed efficiency and adaptive behavior. However, the genetic basis and regulatory mechanisms governing these traits remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the genomic architecture of feeding behavior in 205 slow-growing yellow broilers using whole-genome sequencing and high-resolution behavioral phenotyp

Effects of chemical cues on feeding and foraging behavior in the sea urchin Mesocentrotus nudus.

Overgrazing by sea urchins is a primary driver of kelp forest degradation, leading to "urchin barrens" characterized by diminished biodiversity and productivity. While behavior-based management using chemical cues shows promise, the development and systematic evaluation of novel repellents for Mesocentrotus nudus remain limited. We investigated the behavioral responses of sea urchins to chemical cues from coffee waste (CW) and starfish (SF) through a series of four stepwise experiments including attraction, feeding-suppression, repellence, and barrier tests. In the attraction test, sea urchins

Postnatal hyperosmolality alters development of hypothalamic feeding circuits with context-specific changes in ingestive behavior.

Drinking and feeding are tightly coordinated homeostatic events and the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVH) represents a possible node of neural integration for signals related to energy and fluid homeostasis. We used TRAP2;Ai14 mice and Fos labeling to visualize neurons in the PVH and median preoptic nucleus (MEPO) responding to both water deprivation and feeding signals. We determined that structural and functional development of dehydration-sensitive inputs to the PVH precedes those of agouti-related peptide (AgRP) neurons, which convey hunger signals and are known to be devel

Maternal separation and post-weaning feeding behavior in rodents: A critical review and meta-analysis.

Child neglect is a worldwide phenomenon that is associated with an increased risk of suffering from eating disorders. We aimed to examine the impact of child neglect on eating behaviors using two animal models of developmental disruption, maternal separation and maternal deprivation (MS and MD). The search resulted in 38 relevant studies, and datasets were divided into two meta-analytical analyses - for regular and palatable food intake (RFI and PFI). Procedure, sex and developmental stage were investigated as potential moderators in the RFI analysis and procedure, sex and main macronutrient i

Impact of diverse musical genres on blood-feeding and mating behavior in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: Sound plays an important role in mosquito foraging and sexual interactions. Mosquitoes utilize acoustic signals for host location, sexual recognition, and mating, which is achieved through the rhythmic beating of their wings to generate distinct sounds characterized by specific flight tone frequencies. METHODS: In this study, electronic music (Tremor by Dimitri Vegas, Martin Garrix and Like Mike) and country music (Country Road by John Denver) were played in high and low volumes to investigate the influence of different genres of music on the blood feeding and mating re

Feeding behavior of post-weaned crossbred steers supplemented in the dry season of the year.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the feeding behavior of grazing steers supplemented in the dry season of the year. Thirty-two castrated crossbred (½ Holstein-Zebu) steers with an average initial weight of 378 ± 7.54 kg, aged 14 months, were distributed into four treatment groups in a completely randomized design with eight replicates. The animals were managed in an area covered with a pasture of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu, in a rotational grazing system. The supplement was formulated so that the animals in the different treatment groups would ingest the same amount of crude p

Feeding Behavior Modulates Biofilm-Mediated Transmission of Yersinia pestis by the Cat Flea, Ctenocephalides felis.

BACKGROUND: The cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis, is prevalent worldwide, will parasitize animal reservoirs of plague, and is associated with human habitations in known plague foci. Despite its pervasiveness, limited information is available about the cat flea's competence as a vector for Yersinia pestis. It is generally considered to be a poor vector, based on studies examining early-phase transmission during the first week after infection, but transmission potential by the biofilm-dependent proventricular-blocking mechanism has never been systematically evaluated. In this study, we assessed t

West Nile virus epidemics in North America are driven by shifts in mosquito feeding behavior.

West Nile virus (WNV) has caused repeated large-scale human epidemics in North America since it was first detected in 1999 and is now the dominant vector-borne disease in this continent. Understanding the factors that determine the intensity of the spillover of this zoonotic pathogen from birds to humans (via mosquitoes) is a prerequisite for predicting and preventing human epidemics. We integrated mosquito feeding behavior with data on the population dynamics and WNV epidemiology of mosquitoes, birds, and humans. We show that Culex pipiens, the dominant enzootic (bird-to-bird) and bridge (bir

Acute effects of ethanol on feeding behavior and leptin-induced STAT3 phosphorylation in rat hypothalamus.

OBJECTIVE: Drinking ethanol stimulates the appetite, producing a positive energy balance. The mechanism by which ethanol regulates the appetite in the central nervous system, however, has not been fully understood. The aim of this study is to investigate the interaction of ethanol with the satiety effect of leptin, a hormone which suppresses the appetite in the hypothalamic region. DESIGN: : Leptin (7.5 micro g) or the same dose of phosphate buffer saline (PBS) was administered into the third ventricle (i.c.v.), 30 min after an intraperitoneal injection (i.p.) of ethanol (0.5 g/kg body weight

Effects of 3-NOP on feeding behavior of dairy cows fed maize silage-based diets.

The primary objective of this study was to determine the effects of 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP) supplementation and silage source on feed intake and eating behavior in dairy cows fed maize silage-based diets. A secondary objective was to investigate if any observed effects were consistent across silage source, exposure period, parity, and lactation stage. Forty-eight Holstein cows (balanced for multiparous vs primiparous and earlier vs later lactation) were enrolled in a balanced 4 × 4 Latin square design. The dietary treatments consisted of no inclusion or inclusion of 3-NOP (Control: 0 mg; or

Time-Restricted Feeding Alters Behavior in a Sex-Specific Manner in Mice With Neuropathic Pain.

Evidence suggests that neuropathic pain (NP) and comorbid mood disorders are associated with circadian abnormalities. This suggests a role for chronotherapies, such as time-restricted feeding (TRF), to alleviate pain and comorbid anxiety. We investigated the effects of TRF on pain and anxiety-related behaviours in spared nerve injury (SNI) mice with NP and diurnal changes in the hypothalamus transcriptome, an important hub for modulating fear and anxiety. SNI male and female C57BL/6JRj mice received TRF during the dark active phase or ad libitum feeding (ALF) for three weeks post-surgery. Beha
