A new method for in vitro feeding of Rhipicephalus australis (formerly Rhipicephalus microplus) larvae: a valuable tool for tick vaccine development.

BACKGROUND: Rhipicephalus microplus is a hard tick that has a major impact on cattle health in tropical and subtropical regions because it feeds on cattle and is implicated in the transmission of pathogens that cause diseases such as bovine anaplasmosis and babesiosis. Presently, acaricides are used to control tick infestation but this is becoming increasingly less effective due to the emergence of tick strains that are resistant to one or more classes of acaricides. Anti-tick vaccines are a promising alternative to control tick infestation in cattle. The life-cycle and host preference of R. m

Evaluation of DNA extraction methods for Bacillus anthracis spores spiked to food and feed matrices at biosafety level 3 conditions.

The DNA extraction efficiency from milk, whey, soy, corn gluten meal, wheat powders and heat-treated corn grain that were spiked with Bacillus anthracis and Bacillus thuringiensis spores was determined. Two steps were critical: lysis of the spores and binding of the free DNA to the DNA binding magnetic beads in the presence of the interfering powders. For the guanidine-thiocyanate based Nuclisens lysis buffer from Biomerieux we found that between 15 and 30% of the spores survived the lysis step. As most lysis buffers in DNA/RNA extraction kits are guanidine based it is likely that other lysis

Assessing the population impact of low rates of breast feeding on asthma, coeliac disease and obesity: the use of a new statistical method.

BACKGROUND: Lack of breast feeding has been reported to be associated with a number of chronic childhood disorders. AIM: To use a recently described measure, the population impact number of eliminating a risk factor over a time period (PIN-ER-t), to quantify the burden of low rates of breast feeding in a UK population of babies born in 2002 with regard to asthma, coeliac disease and obesity. METHODS: We performed literature searches for systematic reviews with meta-analyses that had investigated the association between breast feeding and asthma, coeliac disease and obesity. Based on these da

Infant feeding knowledge among women living with HIV and their interaction with healthcare providers in a high-income setting: a longitudinal mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Recent changes in the infant feeding guidelines for women living with HIV from high-income countries recommend a more supportive approach focusing on shared decision-making. Limited information is available on the infant feeding knowledge of women living with HIV and how healthcare providers engage with them in this context. This multicenter, longitudinal, mixed methods study aims to get a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of infant feeding knowledge among women living with HIV of Nordic and non-Nordic origin living in Nordic countries, and their interaction with healthcare p

Tolerance induction through early feeding to prevent food allergy in infants with eczema (TEFFA): rationale, study design, and methods of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Up to 8% of all children in industrialized countries suffer from food allergies, whereas children with atopic eczema are affected considerably more frequently. In addition, the type and starting time of weaning foods seem to influence the development of food allergies. However, data from interventional studies on weaning are controversial. The aim of this randomized-controlled clinical trial is to investigate, whether an early introduction of hen's egg (HE), cow's milk (CM), peanut (PN), and hazelnut (HN) in children with atopic eczema can reduce the risk for developing food allerg

Enhancing Behavioral Diversity and Activity Budgets in Zoo-Housed African Lions (Panthera leo leo) Through a Modified Feeding Method.

Research on positive animal welfare has prompted exploration and implementation of methods to stimulate the behavioral repertoires of zoo-housed species. We investigated the impact of a modified feeding method on the behavioral diversity, activity budgets, and social relations of five African lions at Zoo Antwerpen. The original method involved daily individual feedings indoors while the modified method provided group feedings three times a week outdoors. Observations spanned 6 weeks (3 weeks per method and a 1-week habituation period in between), yielding 150 h of behavioral data using contin

Less invasive surfactant administration via infant feeding tube versus InSurE method in preterm infants: a randomized control trial.

There is growing evidence that less invasive surfactant administration (LISA) is a better alternative to the standard Intubate-surfactant-extubate (InSurE) procedure in spontaneously breathing preterm infants with RDS. The infant feeding tube is easily available and cost-effective in comparison to special catheters used for surfactant administration in various studies on LISA and cost-effective health care is the need of the hour for countries like ours which are Low and middle-income countries(LMICs).The present study was planned to compare the total duration of respiratory support in preterm

Multi-drug ultraperformance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry method to quantify antimicrobials in feeding stuffs at carry-over level.

RATIONALE: Carry-over is an undesirable contamination from medicated to non-medicated during the production of feedingstuffs. In 2014 the European Parliament and the Council started working to produce a new regulatory act that will fix tolerable levels of drugs by carry-over in non-target feed to have a harmonized practice to evaluate this contamination by veterinary drugs. METHODS: We developed a rapid and effective multi-analyte method coupling ultraperformance liquid chromatography to tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC/MS/MS) for the detection of 37 drugs belonging to different classes of anti

Glass capillary tube feeding: a method for infecting nymphal Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) with the lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi.

We evaluated an artificial capillary feeding method to infect nymphal Ixodes scapularis (Say) ticks with Borrelia burgdoeferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease. Thirty to 70% of the nymphs were infected after feeding for 2.5 h from glass capillary tubes filled with a solution of spirochetes. Capillary infection was stable and persisted in the nymphs for at least 10 d after feeding. Capillary feeding also maintained natural vector competence patterns because I. scapularis ticks acquired infection unlike Dermacentor variablis (Say), which did not become infected. Capillary infected I. scapula

Integrating multi-method approach reveals extensive antibiotic resistance dissemination from concentrated animal feeding operations to surface waters.

Concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) are important sources of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), but how mixed livestock inputs and seasonality shape antibiotic resistance profiles in receiving surface waters remains uncertain. We integrated culture-based screening, qPCR, and shotgun metagenomics to assess AMR in surface waters influenced by dairy and mixed swine and dairy operations across seasonal campaigns. CAFO-impacted sites, which were shown to have much greater levels of multidrug resistance among purified Escherichia coli isolates in our previous study, had higher culturable E.

Critical Evaluation and Validation of a High-Throughput Microplate-Based Cupric Reducing Antioxidant Capacity Method for the Analysis of Fish Feed Ingredients.

The cupric ion reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) assay, originally developed to measure the antioxidant capacity of nutritional products spectrophotometrically, utilized water as the solvent for Trolox. Due to the limited solubility of Trolox in aqueous solutions, the optimization of the solvent system was investigated to enhance analytical performance. Solvent combinations consisting of methanol, ethanol, and water were evaluated to identify the mixture that ensures complete dissolution and maximum absorbance signal, using a ternary plot diagram and mathematical modeling. A methanol/wate

Using environmental sampling to evaluate the effectiveness of decontamination methods to reduce detection of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus RNA on feed manufacturing surfaces.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is a possible biological hazard in feed mills. If the virus enters a feed mill, it becomes widely distributed and is difficult to decontaminate from both feed contact and non-feed contact surfaces. The objective of this study was to evaluate a variety of liquid and dry decontamination treatments that could be used to reduce the amount of PEDV found on feed manufacturing surfaces. This experiment was designed as a 5 × 10 factorial with five different feed manufacturing surfaces and 10 decontamination treatments with three replicates of each combination. Su

Development and Verification of a Suspension-Based TXRF Method for Chromium Determination in Feed and Fecal Samples Containing Chromic Oxide as an External Digestibility Marker.

In the present study, a rapid method based on total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) was developed to determine chromium in feed and fecal samples, containing chromic oxide. The method uses suspension sample preparation with gallium as an internal standard and does not require chemical reagents or complete sample digestion. Key parameters affecting performance, such as particle size, sample concentration, and acquisition time, were optimized to ensure stable signals and reliable quantification. The method showed a limit of quantification of 24 µg g-1 for Cr2O3 and good precision (relative
