INTRODUCTION: Combined femoral arterial and nerve injury does not often occur in cases of proximal femur fracture (hip fracture) and is often overlooked in the emergency medical setting. Physicians should be aware of this rare but possible combination of injuries, which can lead to devastating and disabling patient outcomes.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 42-year-old Ethiopian male was struck by a steel pipe, rushed to the emergency room, and diagnosed with a left subtrochanteric fracture of the femur. Although promptly taken to surgery for fixation and exploration of the femoral artery, it became n

INTRODUCTION: The direct anterior approach (DAA) for primary and revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) has been growing in popularity due to reported less soft tissue disruption, less post-operative pain, earlier post-operative functional recovery, and lower dislocation rate. One potential complication of this approach is damage to the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN). The incidence of damage to the LFCN in the literature ranges from 14.8% to 81%. Documented treatments consist mainly of conservative measures; however, here, we describe a case where operative intervention was pursued due

BACKGROUND: Sciatic nerve injuries cause significant disability. We propose here a novel reconstructive procedure of transferring the motor branches of the femoral nerve as donor nerves to reconstruct both the peroneal and tibial nerve function as a novel approach to treat high sciatic nerve injury.
METHODS: The autopsies of donor nerves (vastus lateralis nerve branch (VLN), vastus medialis nerve branch (VMN), saphenous nerve (SAN)) and respective recipient nerves (deep peroneal nerve branch (DPN), medial gastrocnemius nerve branch (MGN), sural nerve (SN)) were conducted in six fresh-frozen l

BACKGROUND: Femoral nerve injury is a rare complication of cardiac catheterization and is usually caused by direct trauma during femoral artery access, compression from a hematoma, or prolonged digital pressure for post-procedural hemostasis. Peripheral nerve stimulation has been used to treat different pain syndromes in the upper and lower extremities with variable success and it typically requires direct vision with open surgical approach. Since the femoral nerve can be readily seen with ultrasonography, an ultrasound-guided lead placement seemed practical.

BACKGROUND: Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS) is a common cause of lateral hip pain that can be refractory to conservative therapy. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has shown efficacy, but reversible, minimally invasive alternatives are needed. Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) offers neuromodulatory analgesia while preserving nerve integrity.
CASE REPORT: We report a patient with bilateral refractory GTPS treated with temporary PNS targeting the trochanteric branch of the femoral nerve. Bilateral lead placement was performed, resulting in rapid and substantial pain reduction, improved

OBJECT: Nerve transfers are an effective means of restoring control to paralyzed somatic muscle groups and, recently, even denervated detrusor muscle. The authors performed a cadaveric pilot project to examine the feasibility of restoring control to the urethral and anal sphincters using a femoral motor nerve branch to reinnervate the pudendal nerve through a perineal approach.
METHODS: Eleven cadavers were dissected bilaterally to expose the pudendal and femoral nerve branches. Pertinent landmarks and distances that could be used to locate these nerves were assessed and measured, as were ner

Catheter dislocation with continuous peripheral nerve blocks represents a major problem in clinical settings. There is a range of factors affecting the incidence of catheter dislocation, including catheter type. This study aimed to assess the incidence of suture-method catheter (SMC) dislocation 24 h after total knee arthroplasty (TKA), with continuous femoral nerve block (CFNB) and continuous femoral triangle block (CFTB), respectively. In the prospective randomized trial, 40 patients qualified for TKA with SMC and were divided into two groups, those who received CFNB (Group 1, n = 20) and th

We present a rare case of an asymptomatic extensive tumor in the retroperitoneum and thigh, which has not been published in the scientific literature so far. During the preventive examination, in an otherwise healthy 29-years old man, a tumor mass in the lower left abdominal quadrant was observed on ultrasound. A computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large, lobulated, multiseptated retroperitoneal mass stretching from the level of the lower left kidney pole to the distal third of the left thigh. Positron emission tomography/ computed tomography showed weak metaboli

Femoral nerve palsy with concomitant patellar dislocation is a rare clinical entity that has not previously been well documented. The authors present the case of a 16-year-old female ballet dancer who sustained a patellar dislocation with concomitant femoral nerve palsy. She experienced muscle weakness after the initial injury and developed neuropathic symptoms through the anterior left thigh. The patient exhibited muscle atrophy in her left lower extremity verified by circumferential thigh measurements as well as magnetic resonance imaging showing clear atrophy of the anterior compartment. OBJECTIVE: To report femoral neuropathy caused by nerve entrapment associated with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH).
STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
ANIMAL: Seven-year-old female spayed Boxer dog.
RESULTS: Entrapment of the right femoral nerve due to DISH caused a femoral nerve deficit and atrophy of muscle groups associated with the affected nerve. A combination of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging was performed to provide a diagnosis. Amputation of the right transverse process of the sixth lumbar vertebra at the level of nerve entrapment relieved the neurologica

Femoral nerve block (FNB) is a well documented option for post-operative analgesia following major knee surgery. However, motor blockade may be prolonged preventing early mobilisation thereby increasing the length of stay. In addition, as a consequence of persistent quadriceps weakness, patients have an increased risk of falling. We present a series of five patients who underwent total knee replacement with spinal anaesthesia and FNB who fell, sustaining complete wound disruption - including a patient with peri-prosthetic fracture requiring further surgery and prolonged hospital stay. The lite

Injury to the nerves after inguinal hernia surgery is uncommon. The femoral nerve may be damaged by suture or staples, tissue scar entrapment, local anesthesia blockade or direct compression. We present a case of a transient lesion of the femoral nerve after mesh hernioplasty for a re-recurrent inguinal hernia, confirmed by radiological studies, electrophysiology and clinical recovery. The diagnosis, mechanism of injury and surgical approach are reviewed. Surgery to a recurrent hernia may be underestimated. The role of electromyography nerve conducting studies is emphasized insisting on the im

The origin and course of the posterior femoral cutaneous nerve were observed macroscopically in 38 Japanese adult cadavers which were dissected in the University of Hokkaido, Faculty of Medicine during the years 1971/72 and the results obtained were compared with those from some other mammals (rat, rabbit, dog and cat) and a number of bibliographical findings on the other animals. On the basis of the archetype of the pudendal plexus, the site of origin of the posterior femoral cutaneous nerve was divided into seven portions as follows: the sciatic nerve or inferior gluteal nerve (I) and its or

The posterior femoral cutaneous nerve (PFCN) is an extensive nerve with numerous collateral branches which provide cutaneous innervation to 2/3rds of the posterior thigh, the infragluteal fold, as well as the lateral anal region, scrotum, and labia majora through its inferior cluneal and pudendal nerve branches. It has been noted in multiple studies that patients can experience persistent PFCN neuropathy after surgery for decompression of known collateral branches. In this study, we used 17 formaldehyde (7 male and 10 female) perfused cadavers obtained from Hershey Medical Center's donor progr

OBJECTIVE: Identify sonographic features of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) in meralgia paresthetica (MP) and report therapeutic outcomes in sonographically confirmed cases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective review of 50 patients with clinically suspected MP and 20 controls. Ultrasounds were reviewed for characteristics of the LFCN and compared between groups. When available, MRIs were reviewed. In cases of sonographically pathologic LFCN, subsequent therapeutic interventions were recorded.
RESULTS: Thirty-five of the suspected MP cases (70%) had ultrasound findings suggestive

PURPOSE: The ischial tuberosity, referred to as the "sit bone" by patients with pain, is surrounded by critical nerves. This research relates, for the first time, the involvement of the posterior femoral cutaneous nerve (PFCN), including its perineal and inferior cluneal branches to the symptom of "sitting pain." An experience with PFCN resection for treatment of pain with sitting is reported.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The computer records were searched from 2010 through August of 2013, identifying 17 patients who had surgery on PFCN. Fifteen of these 17 were women. Mean age of 17 patients was 54

BACKGROUND: Schwannomas (neurinomas) are among the most frequent peripheral nerve tumors. Nevertheless, these are seldom located in the lower extremities in association with the femoral nerve.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: In this case, the occurrence of a schwannoma adjacent to the femoral nerve is described in a patient presenting with nonspecific pain in the thigh accompanied by a palpable mass. Sensory and motor deficits were not present. Further examinations by MRI and biopsy followed by histopathology, revealed the diagnosis of a schwannoma. The tumor was completely excised.
CONCLUSION: Altho
