Isopropanol-butanol-ethanol production by cell-immobilized vacuum fermentation.

The Isopropanol-Butanol-Ethanol productivity by solventogenic clostridia can increase when cells are immobilized on low-cost, renewable fibrous materials; however, butanol inhibition imposes the need for dilute sugar solutions (less than40 g/L). To alleviate this problem, the in-situ vacuum product recovery technique was applied to recover IBE in repeated-batch cultivation of Clostridium beijerinckii DSM 6423 immobilized on sugarcane bagasse. Five repeated batch cycles were conducted in a 7-L bioreactor containing P2 medium (∼60 g/L glucose) and bagasse packed in 3D-printed concentric annular

Optimisation of Mycobacterium bovis BCG Fermentation and Storage Survival.

Mycobacterium bovis Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (M. bovis BCG) was generated over a century ago for protection against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and is one the oldest vaccines still in use. The BCG vaccine is currently produced using a pellicle growth method, which is a complex and lengthy process that has been challenging to standardise. Fermentation for BCG vaccine production would reduce the complexity associated with pellicle growth and increase batch to batch reproducibility. This more standardised growth lends itself to quantification of the total number of bacilli in the BCG vaccine

Lactobacillus brevis CD2: Fermentation Strategies and Extracellular Metabolites Characterization.

Functional foods and nutraceuticals frequently contain viable probiotic strains that, at certain titers, are considered to be responsible of beneficial effects on health. Recently, it was observed that secreted metabolites might play a key role in this respect, especially in immunomodulation. Exopolysaccharides produced by probiotics, for example, are used in the food, pharmaceutical, and biomedical fields, due to their unique properties. Lactobacillus brevis CD2 demonstrated the ability to inhibit oral pathogens causing mucositis and periodontal inflammation and to reduce Helycobacter pylori

Exploring fermentative skin contact effects and post-fermentative oxidation on phenolics, aroma, and sensory characteristics in white wine.

Fermentative skin contact is increasingly applied in white winemaking, yet its compositional and sensory consequences remain underexplored. This study evaluated Arneis and Erbaluce wines produced under four maceration regimes (0, 2, 7, and 14 days), as well as the effect of post-fermentative oxygenation for each wine obtained. Phenolic composition was quantified by LC-MS/MS and spectrophotometry, volatile compounds by GC-MS, and sensory attributes through a trained panel using a Rate-All-That-Apply (RATA) approach. Extended maceration substantially increased proanthocyanidins, flavan-3-ols, hy

Fermentative valorisation of agri-food residues: optimisation of Lactiplantibacillus paraplantarum fermentation conditions for the production of platform organic acids.

INTRODUCTION: Organic acid fermentation is a key route for integrating second-generation (2G) biomass into biorefineries and promoting industrial symbiosis between agri-food residues and platform-chemical production. However, plant matrices such as tomato pomace (TP) and spent coffee grounds (SCG) show limited carbon accessibility and contain phenolic and lipidic compounds that may inhibit bacterial growth. METHODS: This study uses hydroalcoholically pretreated TP and develops an iterative strategy for organic acid production using Lactiplantibacillus paraplantarum as a biofactory, while eval

Effect of Intensified Fermentation with Wickerhamomyces anomalus on Fungal Community Structure of Fermented Grains and Flavor Compounds of Xiaoqu Baijiu.

In order to explore the effect of Wickerhamomyces on the production of flavor compounds in Xiaoqu Baijiu (XQBJ), this study examined the correlation between the fungal communities in Xiaoqu and ester compounds. It was hypothesized that Wickerhamomyces contributes to the aroma of Xiaoqu. Intensified fermentation methods were used to validate the role of Wickerhamomyces anomalus in XQBJ brewing. Compared to traditional Xiaoqu, intensified fermentation significantly increased the acidity of fermented grains and starch utilization rate (p < 0.05). The fungal communities in fermented grains were an

Effect of Non-Saccharomyces Yeasts Derived from Traditional Fermented Foods on Beer Fermentation Characteristics and Flavor Profiles.

In recent years, numerous studies have demonstrated that non-Saccharomyces yeasts hold potential for industrial application and aroma generation during fermentation. Non-Saccharomyces wild yeasts can be important tools in the development of new products, and the objective of this work was to obtain and characterize novel yeast isolates for their ability to produce beer. Traditional fermented beverages serve as a vital source of yeast strains that can exhibit unique characteristics during the brewing process. Thus, 22 strains of Saccharomycopsis fibuligera were isolated from traditional ferment

The Impact of Fermenter Shape on the Performance of White Wine Alcoholic Fermentation and the Composition of the Resulting Wines in Laboratory-Scale Trials.

A great variety of vessels, including tanks with different shapes and made with different materials, have been installed in wineries during the last decade. However, the influence of the vessel shape itself during alcoholic fermentation and finished wine composition has not been assessed. In the present study, four different shaped borosilicate flasks (cylindrical, conical, ovoid, and spherical) were used to perform alcoholic fermentation of white grape juice in triplicate, following two different inoculation procedures: monoinoculation with a Saccharomyces cerevisiae commercial strain and seq

Non-lactose fermenting Escherichia coli: Following in the footsteps of lactose fermenting E. coli high-risk clones.

Multi-resistant pathogenic strains of non-lactose fermenting Escherichia coli (NLF E. coli) are responsible for various intestinal and extraintestinal infections. Although several studies have characterised such strains using conventional methods, they have not been comprehensively studied at the genomic level. To address this gap, we used whole-genome sequencing (WGS) coupled with detailed microbiological and biochemical testing to investigate 17 NLF E. coli from a diagnostic centre (icddr,b) in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The prevalence of NLF E. coli was 10%, of which 47% (8/17) exhibited multi-drug

Re-fermentation of washed spent solids from batch hydrogenogenic fermentation for additional production of biohydrogen from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste.

In the first batch solid substrate anaerobic hydrogenogenic fermentation with intermittent venting (SSAHF-IV) of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW), a cumulative production of 16.6 mmol H(2)/reactor was obtained. Releases of hydrogen partial pressure first by intermittent venting and afterward by flushing headspace of reactors with inert gas N(2) allowed for further hydrogen production in a second to fourth incubation cycle, with no new inoculum nor substrate nor inhibitor added. After the fourth cycle, no more H(2) could be harvested. Interestingly, accumulated hydrogen in
