Histological and histochemical observations on salivary microliths in ferret.

The fortuitous observation of salivary microliths in ferret was pursued in the present investigation. Major salivary glands obtained post-mortem from mature ferrets of either sex were examined with the use of histology and light microscopical histochemistry for calcium, protein, amino acids, mucosubstances and hydrolytic enzymes. Microliths were detected in most parotids, but were absent from submandibular and sublingual glands. The microliths were usually seen in lumens, and occasionally in parenchyma and interstices. They were variably stained for calcium, tryptophan, and neutral and acidic

Pancreatic islet cell tumor in a domestic ferret.

A 5-year-old castrated male ferret began to exhibit signs of episodic lethargy, hindlimb weakness, and ataxia along with mild to moderate weight loss. Serial blood glucose measurements revealed persistent hypoglycemia. The animal was euthanized and a necropsy performed. Discrete pancreatic nodules were discovered and submitted for histopathologic analysis. One of the nodules was found to contain pancreatic islet cell tumors; other areas contained foci of islet cell and acinar hyperplasia. Pancreatic islet cell tumors, commonly referred to as insulinomas, are common tumors in ferrets and typica

Successful treatment of invasive nasal cryptococcosis in a ferret.

Invasive cryptococcal rhinitis due to Cryptococcus neoformans var gattii was diagnosed in a castrated, 5-year-old, albino ferret with subcutaneous swelling of the nasal bridge. The diagnosis was based on histology, needle aspirate cytology and positive culture on Sabouraud's dextrose agar and birdseed agar. The ferret was successfully treated using a long course of itraconazole (25 to 33 mg orally once daily with food) subsequent to surgical debulking of the lesion, using sequential cryptococcal antigen titre determinations to guide therapy.

Bilateral perinephric pseudocysts and polycystic kidneys in a ferret.

A 3-year-old castrated male domestic ferret was evaluated for abdominal distention. Survey lateral and dorsoventral abdominal radiographs were made. There were two soft tissue radiopacities consistent with grossly enlarged kidneys displacing small bowel and colon cranially, ventrally and caudally. Abdominal ultrasound was performed and revealed bilateral perinephric pseudocysts and polycystic kidneys. The perinephric pseudocysts were found to be dilated renal capsules on exploratory surgery and were drained. On follow up examinations, the pseudocysts were drained by ultrasound-guided paracente

Healing of induced periapical lesions in ferret canines.

A previous study showed that the ferret canine is an appropriate model for inducing periapical lesions. Ferret canines were used in this study to study changes in periapical lesions after root canal treatment (RCT). After periapical pathosis was induced in the maxillary and mandibular canines of six ferrets, RCT was performed on three of the four canines in each animal. Each ferret received periodic intraperitoneal injections of Procion red dye. Two animals were killed at each of 4, 8, and 12 wk after RCT. Apices and surrounding lesions were evaluated radiographically, histologically, and by f

The development of the retinogeniculate pathways in normal and albino ferrets.

The retinogeniculate pathways of normal and albino ferrets have been studied with horseradish peroxidase and tritiated proline used as axonal markers. The uncrossed retinogeniculate projection of adult albino ferrets is abnormally small and occupies only a fraction of the geniculate area normally occupied by uncrossed afferents. The crossed pathway is correspondingly expanded, occupying almost the entire nucleus. The geniculate laminae in the albino ferret are abnormal, showing abnormal fusions between layers receiving crossed input and abnormal discontinuities next to the small cell islands r

Vago-vagal reflexes to the colon of the anaesthetized ferret.

Electrical stimulation of the central end of the vagal communicating branch in the thorax at frequencies between 2 and 20 Hz elicited, after a latency of 7.2 +/- 0.8 s, large-amplitude colonic contractions. 5 Hz stimulation gave near maximal contractions and, because vomiting was more likely to occur at higher stimulus frequencies, was used as the standard stimulus for subsequent experiments. At this frequency the peak colonic contraction was 6.5 +/- 0.9 kPa. Following atropine the characteristics of the response to central vagal stimulation differed from that seen before atropinization. The effect of trypan blue on the development of the ferret and rat.

The teratogenic effects of trypan blue given to pregnant rats and ferrets at equivalent stages of embryonic development are described. In the rat the well known teratogenicity of the dye at 8.5 days of gestation and the surprising cessation of teratogenic effect at 11.5 days (20+ somites) is confirmed. In the ferret the drug is teratogenic both at 13 and 18 days of gestation though the principal abnormalities seen are different to those described in the rat. It has been suggested that the teratogenic action of trypan blue in rats is due to an interference in the function of the yolk sac which

Cryptococcus gattii infection in a Spanish pet ferret (Mustela putorius furo) and asymptomatic carriage in ferrets and humans from its environment.

A domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was presented with lymphadenopathy and acute bilateral blindness. Cytologic evaluation and biopsy of an affected lymph node revealed pyogranulomatous lymphadenitis with intralesional yeast consistent with Cryptococcus sp. Subsequent studies demonstrated Cryptococcus gattii serotype B VGI/AFLP4 as the causative agent. The ferret was treated with fluconazole and prednisone. After one month of therapy, an improvement of the clinical symptoms was detected although blindness persisted. Seven months after presentation, the disease progressed to a severe neur

A Small-Particle Aerosol Model of Ebolavirus Zaire Infection in Ferrets.

The Ebola virus (EBOV) causes severe disease in humans, and animal models are needed to evaluate the efficacy of vaccines and therapeutics. While non-human primate (NHP) and rodent EBOV infection models have been well characterized, there is a growing need for an intermediate model. Here, we provide the first report of a small-particle aerosol (AE) EBOV ferret model and disease progression compared with the intramuscular (IM) EBOV ferret model. EBOV infection of ferrets by either route resulted in uniform lethality in 5-6.5 days post infection (dpi) in a dose-dependent manner, with IM-infected

Airborne transmission of human-isolated avian H3N8 influenza virus between ferrets.

H3N8 avian influenza viruses (AIVs) in China caused two confirmed human infections in 2022, followed by a fatal case reported in 2023. H3N8 viruses are widespread in chicken flocks; however, the zoonotic features of H3N8 viruses are poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that H3N8 viruses were able to infect and replicate efficiently in organotypic normal human bronchial epithelial (NHBE) cells and lung epithelial (Calu-3) cells. Human isolates of H3N8 virus were more virulent and caused severe pathology in mice and ferrets, relative to chicken isolates. Importantly, H3N8 virus isolated from

Visualizing real-time influenza virus infection, transmission and protection in ferrets.

Influenza transmission efficiency in ferrets is vital for risk-assessment studies. However, the inability to monitor viral infection and transmission dynamics in real time only provides a glimpse into transmissibility. Here we exploit a replication-competent influenza reporter virus to investigate dynamics of infection/transmission in ferrets. Bioluminescent imaging of ferrets infected with A/California/04/2009 H1N1 virus (CA/09) encoding NanoLuc (NLuc) luciferase provides the first real-time snapshot of influenza infection/transmission. Evaluation of MDCK cell-derived influenza H7N9 vaccine candidates in ferrets.

Avian-origin influenza A (H7N9) viruses emerged as human pathogens in China in early 2013 and have killed >100 persons. Influenza vaccines are mainly manufactured using egg-based technology which could not meet the surging demand during influenza pandemics. In this study, we evaluated cell-based influenza H7N9 vaccines in ferrets. An egg-derived influenza H7N9 reassortant vaccine virus was adapted in MDCK cells. Influenza H7N9 whole virus vaccine antigen was manufactured using a microcarrier-based culture system. Immunogenicity and protection of the vaccine candidates with three different form

Imaging findings in 14 domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) with lymphoma.

Lymphoma is the most common malignant neoplasia in domestic ferrets, Mustela putorius furo. However, imaging findings in ferrets with lymphoma have primarily been described in single case reports. The purpose of this retrospective study was to describe imaging findings in a group of ferrets with confirmed lymphoma. Medical records were searched between 2002 and 2012. A total of 14 ferrets were included. Radiographs (n = 12), ultrasound (n = 14), computed tomography (CT; n = 1), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI; n = 1) images were available for review. Median age at the time of diagnosis was

Influenza virus respiratory infection and transmission following ocular inoculation in ferrets.

While influenza viruses are a common respiratory pathogen, sporadic reports of conjunctivitis following human infection demonstrates the ability of this virus to cause disease outside of the respiratory tract. The ocular surface represents both a potential site of virus replication and a portal of entry for establishment of a respiratory infection. However, the properties which govern ocular tropism of influenza viruses, the mechanisms of virus spread from ocular to respiratory tissue, and the potential differences in respiratory disease initiated from different exposure routes are poorly unde

Identification of genotypes of Cryptosporidium parvum isolates from ferrets in Japan.

Recent molecular studies show that Cryptosporidium parvum is composed of at least eight genotypes including zoonotic genotypes. Therefore, it is important to screen the genotypes of the isolates harbored in animals for the control of human cryptosporidiosis. The ferret is a popular pet, but also a reservoir of Cryptosporidium. Since the infectivity of zoonotic genotypes in ferrets remains unclear, there is a possibility these hosts harbor zoonotic genotypes. In the present study, we examined the genotypes of C. parvum isolates from ferrets in Japan using polymerase chain reaction direct sequen

Pharmacological aspects of ipecac syrup (TJN-119)-induced emesis in ferrets.

In order to elucidate the precise mechanism of ipecac syrup (TJN-119) on the occurrence of vomiting, we examined the effects of ipecac syrup on the abdominal afferent nerve activity as well as on the 5-HT levels of the ileum and area postrema in ferrets. Oral administration of TJN-119 (0.5 mg/kg) produced a significant increase in afferent abdominal vagus nerve activity which lasted approximately 1 hour. The maximum response induced by TJN-119 was estimated to be 219 +/- 18% of the pre-injection level. Cephaeline or emetine, the main alkaloids of ipecac syrup, also demonstrated similar effects
