[Maternal nutrition as a determinant of fetal weight: role of trace elements and vitamins].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate maternal trace elements and vitamins food intake in the last month of pregnancy and assess their effect on fetal weight. MATERIAL AND METHODS: It is a food intake survey led near 350 pregnant women. All women participated in a nutritional survey and were at term. To examine dietary intakes, food frequency questionnaires were completed before delivery on the diet during the last 24 hours. Authors compared the maternal intakes to the recommended allowance and analyzed the correlation between these intakes and fetal weight. RESULTS: This study confirmed the influence of f

Fetal growth retardation in relation to maternal smoking and weight gain in pregnancy.

Two types of fetal growth retardation were recognized in term infants. One type was characterized by an abnormally low ponderal index (defined as birth weight in grams X 100 divided by crown-heel length in cubic centimeters.) The other type of growth-retarded infants had abnormally short crown-heel lengths for fetal age. Both types were observed under all conditions studied. However, mothers who smoked cigarettes during pregnancy were more likely to have infants with short body lengths for dates, whereas mothers who had low weight gain in pregnancy were more likely to have infants with low pon

Combined Influence of Gestational Weight Gain and Estimated Fetal Weight on Risk Assessment for Small- or Large-for-Gestational-Age Birth Weight: A Prospective Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the frequency with which gestational weight gain and estimated fetal weight do not track across gestation and to assess the risk of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and large-for-gestational-age (LGA) birth weight as a function of tracking. METHODS: This study included a pregnancy cohort (2009-2013) of 2438 women from 4 racial/ethnic groups in the United States. We calculated race- and trimester-specific gestational weight gain and estimated fetal weight z scores. The prevalence of how often gestational weight gain and estimated fetal weight did not or did directly trac

Survival Outcomes by Fetal Weight Discordance after Laser Surgery for Twin-Twin Transfusion Syndrome Complicated by Donor Fetal Growth Restriction.

INTRODUCTION: Management options for treatment of twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) with severe donor intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) include fetoscopic laser surgery and umbilical cord occlusion (UCO). We studied perinatal survival outcomes in this select group after laser surgery, stratifying patients by preoperative estimated fetal weight (EFW) discordance. METHODS: In this retrospective study of monochorionic diamniotic twin gestations with TTTS and selective donor IUGR who underwent laser surgery (2006-2017), preoperative EFW discordance was calculated ([(larger twin - smaller

Examining the association between fetal HLA-C, maternal KIR haplotypes and birth weight.

Human birth weight is under stabilizing selection, seeking balance between extremes of high and low, thereby reducing fetal and maternal perinatal mortality risk. Certain combinations of maternal killer immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) and paternally derived fetal human leuokocyte antigen-C (HLA-C) alleles were previously associated with higher risk of high and low birth weight in a study with limited sample size (n = 1,316). Using recently developed methods to impute HLA and KIR haplotypes using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotype data, we tested associations of fetal HLA and mate

Comprehensive Analysis of Placental DNA Methylation Changes and Fetal Birth Weight in Pigs.

Birth weight is a complex multifactorial trait relevant to health states and disease risks in later life. The placenta is essential for proper fetal growth and facilitates gas, nutrient, and waste exchange between the mother and developing fetus. How changes in placental DNA methylation affect fetal birth weight remains to be fully elucidated. In this study, we used whole-genome bisulfite sequencing and RNA sequencing to reveal a global map of DNA methylation and gene expression changes between the placentas of highest birth weight and lowest birth weight piglets in the same litters. The trans

The Relationship between Placental Shear Wave Elastography and Fetal Weight-A Prospective Study.

Background/Objectives: The utility of shear wave elastography (SWE) as an adjunct to ultrasound biometry and Doppler velocimetry for the examination of placental dysfunction and suboptimal fetal growth is unclear. To date, limited data exist correlating the mechanical properties of placentae with fetal growth. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between placental shear wave velocity (SWV) and ultrasound estimated fetal weight (EFW), and to ascertain if placental SWV is a suitable proxy measure of placental function in the surveillance of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) pregnancies

MRI-Derived Fetal Weight Estimation in the Midpregnancy Fetus: A Method Comparison Study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare the standard ultrasound (US) estimated fetal weight (EFW) and MRI volume-derived methods for the midtrimester fetus. METHODS: Twenty-five paired US and MRI scans had the EFW calculated (gestational age [GA] range = 20-26 weeks). The intra- and interobserver variability of each method was assessed (2 operators/modality). A small sub-analysis was performed on 5 fetuses who were delivered preterm (mean GA 29 +3 weeks) and compared to the actual birthweight. RESULTS: Two MRI volumetry EFW formulae under-measured compared to US by -10.9% and -14.5%

P-gp expression inhibition mediates placental glucocorticoid barrier opening and fetal weight loss.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal adverse environments can cause fetal intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) and higher susceptibility to multiple diseases after birth, related to multi-organ development programming changes mediated by intrauterine overexposure to maternal glucocorticoids. As a glucocorticoid barrier, P-glycoprotein (P-gp) is highly expressed in placental syncytiotrophoblasts; however, the effect of P-gp on the occurrence of IUGR remains unclear. METHODS: Human placenta and fetal cord blood samples of IUGR fetuses were collected, and the related indexes were detected. Pregnant Wistar rat

Influence of birth weight on fetal cardiac indices at 35-37 weeks' gestation.

OBJECTIVE: Echocardiographic studies have reported that fetuses with low birth weight, compared to those with normal birth weight, have globular hearts and reduced cardiac function. Dichotomizing continuous variables, such as birth weight, may be helpful in describing pathology in small studies but can prevent us from identifying physiological responses in relation to change in size. The aim of this study was to explore associations between fetal cardiac morphology and function and birth weight, as a continuous variable, as well as uterine artery (UtA) pulsatility index (PI), as an indirect me

Intertwin estimated fetal weight or crown rump length discordance and adverse perinatal outcome.

AIM: In the current review study, we present recent data regarding the importance of intertwin estimated fetal weight (EFW) and crown rump length (CRL) discordance for the prediction of adverse perinatal outcome both in monochorionic and in dichorionic diamniotic gestations. RESULTS: Twins with significant weight disparity are associated with higher rates of perinatal morbidity and mortality, regardless of gestational age at delivery. However, there is no agreement regarding as to the cut off value above which the perinatal outcome is unfavorably affected and the threshold range from 10 to 30

New sonographic method for fetuses with small abdominal circumference improves fetal weight estimation.

PURPOSE: Accurate estimation of fetal weight is a valuable tool for determining further obstetric management. Commonly used weight formulas lack accuracy, even though some equations appear to be favorable within defined weight ranges. However, due to the fact that fetal weight is not known in advance, it is not always clear which formula is suitable. In most of the commonly used equations, the fetal abdominal circumference (AC) is not only included but also has the greatest impact on weight estimation. The aim of our study was to develop and evaluate a new formula specifically designed for a s

Hemoglobin, altitude and birth weight: does maternal anemia during pregnancy influence fetal growth?

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between maternal hemoglobin concentration, altitude and birth weight. STUDY DESIGN: Birth weights in 235 term pregnancies were investigated for their dependence on maternal hemoglobin concentration after other maternal and pregnancy-specific influences on fetal weight were taken into account. The additional predictive value of hemoglobin concentration on birth weight was assessed using multiple regression. Using published data, the relationship of hemoglobin concentration to altitude was determined, as was the effect of increasing altitude on birth w

Adolescent pregnancy: maternal weight effects on fetal heaviness: possible route to improved outcomes.

In a previous report of a zinc supplementation trial in pregnant adolescents zinc effect varied according to maternal weight (wt) status--normal (90-110% of expected wt), light or heavy, prompting this analysis of effects of wt status and gestational wt gain on fetal heaviness relative to length and gestational age (GA) and other pregnancy outcomes. One-third of adolescents shifted in or out of normal wt by delivery, creating seven outcome groups--light-light, light to normal, normal to light, normal-normal, normal to heavy, heavy to normal, and heavy-heavy. These wt class change groups varied

Identification of mechanisms responsible for fetal weight reduction in mice following ultrasound exposure.

This study challenges existing interpretations of the effects of ultrasound on fetal development. The results demonstrated that a lower mean fetal weight in mice observed after intrauterine exposure to 2 MHz ultrasound resulted from maternal distress, and was not simply a direct effect of ultrasound interaction with the fetuses. At day 8 of gestation continuous wave ultrasound was applied to different regions of the maternal abdomen at spatial average intensities between 0.5 and 5.5 W cm-2 for 3 min. Insonating the uterus directly resulted in resorptions, abortions and gross developmental abno
