OBJECTIVE: Pre-eclampsia (PE) is among the most commonly researched topics in perinatology. Fetuin-A (FA), a multifunctional protein, has roles in the inhibition of ectopic calcification and the regulation of serum glucose levels. Reduced FA is an indicator of inflammation. BACKGROUND: Fetuin-A is a negative acute-phase protein, which acts as a potent calcification inhibitor and an antagonist of transforming growth factor-β. Thus, fetuin-A levels are influenced by chronic inflammation and actively affect fibrosis and calcification processes, respectively. Graft rejection, interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy, chronic inflammation and calcification are common causes for kidney allograft loss. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are more susceptible to acute myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MI/R) injury. However, the mechanism remains largely elusive. Clinical observation showed that high levels of hepatokine fetuin-B (FetB) in plasma are significantly associated with both diabetes and coronary artery diseases. This study was aimed to determine whether FetB mostly derived from liver exacerbates MI/R-induced injury and the underlying mechanisms in T2DM.
