Research Investments in Global Health: A Systematic Analysis of UK Infectious Disease Research Funding and Global Health Metrics, 1997-2013.

BACKGROUND: Infectious diseases account for a significant global burden of disease and substantial investment in research and development. This paper presents a systematic assessment of research investments awarded to UK institutions and global health metrics assessing disease burden. METHODS: We systematically sourced research funding data awarded from public and philanthropic organisations between 1997 and 2013. We screened awards for relevance to infection and categorised data by type of science, disease area and specific pathogen. Investments were compared with mortality, disability-adjus

Crowding in or Out?National Public Pension, Inter-Generational Contract, and Family Support to Empty-Nest Older Parents in Rural China.

Evidence to date has been inconclusive on the effects of public pension on family support to older adults, and the underlying mechanism behind such effects remains unclear. This study examines the effects of the New Rural Social Pension Scheme on family support to empty-nest older parents in rural China, where family care is traditionally favored for older adults. Using data from the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey, the findings reveal that pension receipt promotes bidirectional financial transfers and intimate relationships between generations, thus increasing (or crowding in) children

Prevalence of financial and social challenges and their associations with major satisfaction in animal and dairy science undergraduates.

Student success is shaped by both financial stability and social connectedness, yet little research has examined these dynamics within Animal and Dairy Science programs. This study investigated financial well-being, peer relationships, and academic and career satisfaction among 298 undergraduates in Animal Science (ANS), Dairy Science (DYS), and General Pre-Veterinary (GENPV) at a large land-grant university (33% response rate). A significant GPA difference of 0.45 points was observed between respondents and non-respondents (3.47 ± 0.52 vs. 3.02 ± 0.84; P < 0.01), suggesting possible non-respo

The impact of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome on caregivers: assessing quality of life and burden.

BACKGROUND: Raising a child with 22q11.2DS presents significant psychosocial and financial challenges for caregivers for various reasons. Research on the quality of life (QoL) of caregivers for patients with rare diseases highlights significant challenges, with caregivers reporting lower health-related QoL compared to the general population. Long-term care impacts social, health, and economic aspects of life, with the burden on caregivers inversely correlating with their QoL, affecting mobility and daily activities. Parents often manage their child's complex medical care, underscoring the need

The impact of emotional and material social support on women's drug treatment completion.

This study assessed how women's perceptions of emotional and material social support affect their completion of residential drug treatment. Although previous research has examined how social support affects recovery, few studies, if any, have examined both the types and the sources of social support. The study hypothesized that women's perceptions of the emotional and material social support they receive from family, friends, partners, drug treatment, child welfare, and welfare agencies will affect treatment completion. The sample consisted of 117 women who were enrolled in a women's residenti

African American Attitudes Toward Supporting Older Adults: Differences by Lifecourse Stage.

African Americans express stronger norms of familism compared to other racial and ethnic groups in the United States. Frequently overlooked is whether attitudes toward family and/or government support for older adults varies by lifecourse stage (young adult, middle age, and older adults) among African Americans as well as by type of support. Using data from the 2001-2003 National Survey of American Life Adult Reinterview (n=1696, aged 18-90), we conducted multinomial logistic regression analyses to examine whether attitudes toward family, equal family and government, or government responsibili

"I don't try to seek him out": Views of child support over time.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines how mothers with limited incomes think about the relationship between child support, making ends meet, and co-parenting relationships early in children's lives. BACKGROUND: Research has documented how formal and informal child support can be important resources for custodial parents and their children. Whether and how child support arrangements are made can be complicated by relationship dissolution, parental repartnering, and co-parents' relationship quality. Prior studies suggest relationship dynamics shape the financial support that non-custodial parents prov

Intergenerational Factors Influencing Household Cohabitation in Urban China: Chengdu.

Family composition impacts individual consumption habits, which may potentially transform urban integral space structure. Due to the reform in the housing system at the end of the 1990s and increases in residents' income, houses became more affordable, and intergenerational household cohabitation is no longer the primary pattern. Nonetheless, as families change, it still remains an important form of family composition. Intergenerational support is important in household habitation. This study examines the temporal changes and the structure of intergenerational household cohabitation. Moreover,

Motivators and Barriers to Physician Assistant Preceptorship in North Carolina (CME).

INTRODUCTION: Physician assistant (PA) programs face persistent challenges in recruiting and retaining clinical preceptors due to time constraints, administrative burden, lack of compensation, and limited training. Additional pressures, such as health care consolidation, program expansion, clinician burnout, and financial implications of paid clinical sites, further strain preceptorship capacity. This study examines motivators and barriers influencing clinicians' willingness to precept PA students. METHODS: This mixed-methods study used snowball sampling to recruit current, former, and nonpre

"As time passes, her disability becomes severe." The struggles and challenges of caring for children living with spina bifida and hydrocephalus in Uganda: perspectives from caregivers.

PURPOSE: Spina bifida and hydrocephalus (SBH) are common neural tube defects that cause brain and spinal cord damage leading to loss of sensation, paralysis, deformities, and bladder/bowel dysfunction. Children with these conditions require substantial caregiving support. However, the specific challenges caregivers face remains poorly understood. This study explored the experiences of parents and siblings caring for a child or young adult with SBH. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 parents and 12 siblings in Central Uganda to understand their caregiving experiences. T

The personal financial burden associated with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies.

The economic burden of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) within the US is underexplored. We hypothesized that IIMs patients experience considerable personal financial burden due to risks of multi-specialist visits, chronic long-term care, costs associated with disability, medical treatment, and overall high spending costs within the US healthcare system. We surveyed members of Myositis Support and Understanding (MSU) (response rate 4.7 %), and of the 470 survey participants that self-reported with diagnoses of IIMs, we assessed financial burden using two validated measures: (1) Financi
