Biomechanical modeling and design optimization of cartilage myringoplasty using finite element analysis.

The purpose of this study was to determine the acoustic transfer characteristics of cartilage for optimal cartilage myringoplasty. In order to do so, we developed a cartilage plate/tympanic membrane-coupled model using finite element analysis. Cartilage specimens of the tragus were obtained from fresh human cadavers, and the parameters of the tragus were determined by curve fitting and cross-calibration. A cartilage plate was used to repair an eardrum perforation, and the new coupled tympanic membrane-cartilage complex was loaded into our 3-dimensional biomechanical model of the middle ear for

Effects of brain ventricular shape on periventricular biomechanics: a finite-element analysis.

OBJECTIVE: A computer simulation based on the finite-element method was used to study the biomechanics of acute obstructive hydrocephalus and, in particular, to define why periventricular edema is most prominent in the anterior and posterior horns. METHODS: Brain parenchyma was modeled as a two-phase material composed of a porous elastic matrix saturated by interstitial fluid. The effects of the cerebrovascular system were not included in this model. The change in the shape of the ventricles as they enlarged was described by two variables, i.e., the stretch of the ependyma and the concavity o

Craniofacial growth in apert syndrome as measured by finite-element scaling analysis.

A new tool for the study of biological form change is applied in a comparison of craniofacial growth in normal children and those affected with Apert syndrome. Using finite-element scaling analysis, the magnitude of size change during postnatal growth in the Apert sample was determined to be generally less than normal, and the magnitude of shape change was generally greater than normal. No consistent, statistically significant, alteration from normal growth was defined in the Apert sample, however. There appears to be no consistent effect on general cell and tissue proliferation in Apert syndr

Material properties of arachnoid trabeculae in situ using inverse finite element analysis.

The pia-arachnoid complex (PAC), composed of pia mater, arachnoid mater, and arachnoid trabeculae, plays a critical role in transmitting mechanical forces between the brain and skull during head trauma. Despite its importance, the material properties of the PAC microstructure are unknown, limiting the accurate representation of the brain-skull interface in simulations of traumatic brain injuries. To address this unmet need, this study combined in situ, pressure-controlled subarachnoid inflation with optical coherence tomography imaging and inverse finite element (FE) analysis to calculate the

Efficient and validated finite element analysis for quantitative assessment of fracture healing.

Accurate, objective assessment of fracture healing remains a critical unmet clinical need, as current evaluation relies on subjective radiographic and clinical observations. Finite element (FE) modeling has demonstrated promise for quantifying mechanical competence of healing bone, yet its clinical adoption is hindered by technical complexity and computational cost. This study validates a stepwise voxel-based FE modeling framework designed to enable efficient, automated, and scalable assessment of fracture healing from CT images. Using an ovine tibial osteotomy model with longitudinal CT scans

Evaluating femoral head collapse risk post-fixation removal: a finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: Femoral neck fractures are prevalent in orthopedic injuries, often leading to complications such as nonunion and osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). Studies indicate that after healing and removal of internal fixation devices, some patients develop ONFH, while others experience osteosclerosis around the screw holes due to prolonged fixation, increasing ONFH risk. Despite such observations, biomechanical studies on this phenomenon are limited. This study assesses the risk of femoral head collapse post-internal fixation device removal and investigates the biomechanical effects

The influence of femoral lytic tumors segmentation on autonomous finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: The validated CT-based autonomous finite element system Simfini (Yosibash et al., 2020) is used in clinical practice to assist orthopedic oncologists in determining the risk of pathological femoral fractures due to metastatic tumors. The finite element models are created automatically from CT-scans, assigning to lytic tumors a relatively low stiffness as if these were a low-density bone tissue because the tumors could not be automatically identified. METHODS: The newly developed automatic deep learning algorithm which segments lytic tumors in femurs, presented in (Rachmil et al.,
