Total situs inversus found coincidentally following a firearm injury.

Situs inversus totalis is very rare and usually diagnosed coincidentally as it does not affect the patient's life. Being unaware of the patient's condition can lead to undesirable results from the surgeon and patient's point of view when an emergency and forensic surgical intervention is required. We present a case who was operated on urgently for a firearm injury after receiving a preoperative diagnosis of situs inversus totalis. In conclusion, situs inversus totalis can cause difficulties for surgeons in case of emergency surgery and is usually diagnosed coincidentally. There are a few cases

Ultrastructural changes of the cochlea after oral and maxillofacial firearm wounds.

BACKGROUND: There have been reports that maxillofacial firearm wounds could induce hearing loss. The effects on the ultrastructure of the cochlea and cochlear nerves after oral and maxillofacial firearm wounds are still unclear. This experiment investigates the ultrastructural changes of the cochlea and cochlear nerve after oral and maxillofacial firearm wounds. METHODS: Twenty dogs were wounded by steel spheres or detonators to establish animal models of oral and maxillofacial firearms wound. At different times after trauma, the wounds were examined and the specimens of the cochlea and cochl

Mental Health Outcomes in Children after Parental Firearm Injury.

BACKGROUND: Every year, approximately 20,000 youths lose a parent to firearm injury in the United States. Many more youths have parents who sustain nonfatal firearm injuries. The effect of parents' firearm injuries on their children's health and health care is poorly understood. METHODS: Using U.S. commercial health insurance claims data from the 2007-2022 period, we identified youths, 1 to 19 years of age, whose parents had received treatment for firearm injury (exposure). Each youth with exposure was matched with up to five control youths on the basis of year, month, youth sex, metropolitan

3D printed firearm identification: A comparison of machine learning models.

The production of three-dimensional (3D) printed firearms is concerning as these objects are unregulated and untraceable due to the lack of serial numbers. Criminals can obtain 3D models online or design their own versions using computer-aided design (CAD) software. While prior research and law enforcement efforts have focused primarily on analyzing tangible printed objects, investigations analyzing digital evidence are currently limited. This study presents a proof-of-concept approach for classifying firearm and non-firearm objects using geometric information extracted from g-code files, whic

A novel and robust deep learning model for sibling firearm matching.

In this paper, our goal is to develop a novel and robust method for firearm sibling matching from cartridge-case head (in specific firing pin region) photometric stereo imagery. We employ a dataset of unprecedented scope compared to prior literature, incorporating genuine real-world case work, including cartridge cases fired from aged, worn, or deliberately modified firearms across different time periods, making it the most challenging setting. Methodologically, the study introduces a triplet-loss framework with semi-hard negative mining and an explicit margin term, combined with a pre-contras

Caregiver-Perceived Appropriateness of Discussing Firearm Storage in the Healthcare Setting.

OBJECTIVE: Firearms are the leading cause of death for children in the US - secure storage decreases morbidity and mortality. Though effective at improving storage, healthcare providers (HCPs) seldom discuss secure storage, partly due to concern that it will damage the caregiver-provider relationship. We sought to1) Describe caregiver-perceived appropriateness of HCP firearm storage counseling, and 2) Identify variables associated with perceived appropriateness. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from the 2025 Colorado Firearm Injury Prevention Survey (COFIPS), administered online

Pediatric intestinal failure due to firearm injury: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric short bowel syndrome (SBS) is often secondary to congenital conditions such as malrotation with midgut volvulus, intestinal atresia, gastroschisis, or necrotizing enterocolitis. Traumatic injury secondary to firearms is a less common cause of SBS encountered in the United States. We aim to describe the morbidity affecting four children (ages 9-16 years) with SBS secondary to firearm injury. CASE REPORTS: All patients had extensive injury directly to the bowel and/or the intestinal blood supply, requiring parenteral and/or enteral nutrition at discharge. All patients had

Variation in Acute Pain Management of Youth With Nonfatal Firearm Injuries.

OBJECTIVE: Firearm injuries are a leading cause of morbidity among youth, yet acute pain management practices have not been well characterized. Our objective was to evaluate acute pain medication administration by key sociodemographic characteristics and injury severity after nonfatal firearm injuries. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cross-sectional analysis utilizing Pediatric Health Information System at 40 US children's hospitals from 2016 to 2021. We included inpatient and emergency department (ED) only encounters for patients 0-21 years old with a firearm injury diagnosis. The main

The Experience of Survivors of Firearm Suicide Attempts: A Retrospective Case Series.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to identify people who survived firearm suicide attempts to describe the acute stressors, substance use, and mental health conditions related to the attempt. BACKGROUND: Most firearm deaths in the United States are the result of suicide. Because firearm suicide attempts have a case fatality rate of approximately 90%, little is known about the precipitating factors that lead to firearm suicide attempts. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case series of patients admitted to a large hospital system between 2000 and 2019 who survived intentional, self-inflicted gunshot wo

Association of pediatric firearm injury with neighborhood social deprivation in Philadelphia.

BACKGROUND: Firearm-related injury is the leading cause of death among children and adolescents. There is a need to clarify the association of neighborhood environment with gun violence affecting children. We evaluated the relative contribution of specific social determinants to observed rates of firearm-related injury in children of different ages. METHODS: This was a population-based study of firearm injury in children (age <18 years) that occurred in Philadelphia census tracts (2015-2021). The exposure was neighborhood Social Deprivation Index (SDI) quintile. The outcome was the rate of pe

Firearm injury and the Deloyers procedure: case report and literature review.

Following extended colon resections, it may not always be possible to perform colorectal anastomosis. The Deloyers procedure, which involves the transposition of the right colon, has been identified as a viable solution. This report aims to discuss the circumstances under which the Deloyers procedure was performed, as well as to evaluate the early and late postoperative outcomes, by reviewing cases conducted between 2010 and 2023. In a 22-year-old female patient who suffered major organ and tissue loss (with injuries to the sigmoid colon, descending colon, transverse colon, and mesentery) due

Firearm-Related Traumatic Brain Injuries in Adults: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Firearm-related traumatic brain injury (TBI) has emerged as a significant public health issue in the United States, coinciding with a rapid increase in gun-related deaths. This scoping review aims to update our understanding of firearm-related TBI in adult populations. METHODS: A comprehensive search of 6 online databases yielded 22 studies that met the inclusion criteria. The reviewed studies predominantly focused on young adult men who were victims of assault, although other vulnerable populations were also affected. RESULTS: Key factors in evaluating patients wi

Policy pathways to address American youth firearm injury and death.

Context: The burden of firearm violence and death are uniquely American problems. Over 90% of firearm deaths among children and adolescents in high income countries occur in the United States. Despite similar overall crime rates, the gun homicide rate is about 25 times higher in the U.S. than other Western democracies, and 49 times higher for those aged 15-24 years. Firearm-related injuries are a leading cause of child and adolescent deaths, second only to motor vehicle crashes. Approximately 4.6 million children are living in U.S. homes with at least one loaded, unlocked firearm. Reducing gun

Firearm trauma: Race and insurance influence mortality and discharge disposition.

BACKGROUND: Health insurance and race impact mortality and discharge outcomes in the general trauma population. It remains unclear if disparities exist by race and/or insurance in outcomes following firearm injuries. The purpose of this study was to assess differences in mortality and discharge based on race and insurance status following firearm injuries. METHODS: The National Trauma Data Bank (2007-2016) was queried for firearm injuries by International Classification of Diseases, Ninth/Tenth Revision, Ecodes. Patients with known discharge disposition, age (18-64 years), race, and insurance
